Many dog lovers make all kinds of inferences about how their pets feel about them, but no one has captured images of actual canine thought processes -- until now.
Emory University researchers have developed a new methodology to scan the brains of alert dogs and explore the minds of the oldest domesticated species. The technique uses harmless functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), the same tool that is unlocking secrets of the human brain.

Dogs communicate a great deal of information about their thoughts with their body language, distance from stimuli, facial expressions, and eyes. Many people miss the cues, for various reasons. More than any other animals, dogs want to please us.

talking buttons in my opinion, are the better way to learn what animals are thinking. even with a limited vocabulary of buttons, the way that dogs choose to express their other needs using a limited amount of buttons shows incredible insight into their intelligence and cognition. plus, dogs have no way of understanding human social norms, so they’re a lot more unrestricted with what they say! almost like they share every single thought they have

Lots of people say that they'd already have scanned their dogs' brains, that they've already thought of this. But it's a lot harder than it looks. You have to train them to go into the scanner, which takes months. They also have to get the dogs used to the sound, which also takes months. Plus, the dogs have to stay perfectly still throughout the whole thing, which takes even more months. So, I'd like to see all of YOU try and do this yourself -_-

Good question, over time repeatedly.. i assume would be as bad for a dog as a human. But to do it a few times in a years think will be ok, as we know a dog only lives like 7-12 years on average. (Yes, yes i know some live to 16+ but that honestly is not common).

First of all a dog isn't an "it". But it's good that they do this research though. Dog's are man's best friend and most loyal. He or she will defend their partner with there own life without a second thought, they will keep you happy for ever even into their own passing's. Their love for us never ends. We need to try to figure out how to communicate with our loved ones which would be awesome, understand what they are thinking, saying! For all you dog and animal abusers, hope you all the most gruesome life anyone can have. If you can abuse a dog who does nothing but love you even when your beating their lives out of them you will most probably do the same with a child because that's all a dog is, a child with abundant love! Take care of your best friend with love and live a longer life!

Dogs have the ability to dream of things. Dogs can understand schedules and can show disappointment when something they assumed would happen today didnt go as planned. A dog that is tired and wants to be left alone, but you bother him with pats and he lets out a big sigh says it all lol. Its hard for us humans to understand how a dog's mind work, but they definitely have a mind and they do think. The easiest way for me to think about the whole subject is kinda comparing dogs intelligence to slightly above a retarded kid.

“Pets” give an individual animal external condition it now must have or develop in order to keep this interaction going. It requires long term planning in most cases. In nature you can find behaviors thought to be only human like farming, regional dialects, warfare and even pets each of these are found out side of human interaction most even within the insect world. Truly the only thing that seems to be unique to humans is written dialect.

You don't know the whole story. Everyone has thought about it, its just that in order to do a brain scan you have to have them sit completely still in the scanner, and this is the first time we've been able to train one to do it. We've been trying since the technology came out.

You don't need a fancy machine to SEE what a dog is thinking... we all have a pair of eyes... use em'!!!!! Dogs do not talk?? Umm ... My grandmother used to say to me all the time... Funny... for an animal that is silent they sure have a lot to say... She would then tell me.. Dogs can talk... its us humans that are too stupid to understand them... Want to SEE a dog talk... watch closely and learn their language... No, dogs can't actually use spoken language... that is true... but they have body and gesture language... It's a sort of body sign language... they use it, and you can gesture back to them... its a crude form of communication that works.. And they do use even the smallest of movements that translate into a complete thought.. and they understand even that smallest of movement if something else uses it back to them... You CAN talk and communicate with a dog if you learn and use their language...
