I think it is only useful if A: you are a top level solver who needs every possible advantage or B: use a method the orients edges in a previous step since without that you only get it 1/7 times making it harder to maintain and won’t affect averages as much.

Yeah, it's all relative. When I started, OLL seemed like a ton of algs to learn. But it gets a bit easier over time.

Have you tried out Mehta TDR? It always has zbll at the end and has a mean move count of 45

@@noahstelting you start by building a pseudo ledge which is a pseudo 2x2x3 block +1 belt edge then you do eole which has a 5-6 mean move count and inserts the final belt edge + eo Then you do TDR which is over 350 algs but is mostly RUD gen which inserts the final D Edge And inserting and permutting the final 2 D corners then you are left with ZBLL pseudo eo ledge is all playable in inspection by top solvers and from there it’s all algorithmic and is super fast if your prepared to put in the time to learn it

I average around 35 to 40 seconds on the 3x3. I recently learned 2 look OLL and PLL. I'm also in the process of making the cross on the bottom instead of the top. I wonder, would it be totally weird if I tried to learn this?

If you know full OLL and PLL and average 20 seconds then you need to work on cross and F2L. So not learning anything new but making sure you have good look ahead. Make sure your solves are fluid and that you can recognize last layer cases quickly.

I've watched a ton of videos including this one several times and I'm looking for my next step but getting a lot of confusing messages on the best way forward is so maybe you can help me. I have learned CFOP, Full PLL, Full OLL, working on better Cross and F2L... I want to learn more alg sets to mix things up a bit, but should I learn Winter Variation or COLL or VLS, VHLS, or BLE or ZBLS or ZBLL... I don't want to waste my time learning a bunch of algs that will become redundant a few months later because there's another set to learn, if it can be avoided which I know may not always be possible. Some say learn part of this and part of that but only these ones and not them ones, all of that and none of this. Hope that makes sense. Can you shed any light on this with some more specifics, what to learn and what to avoid learning? Oh, and for context I'm 53 with some bent fingers and a bit of arthritis creeping in, so not looking to break any world records, just looking improve my own times and continue learning. Averaging around 27 seconds, pb of 16 seconds. Edited: Also only interested in 3x3 using both hands. Thanks 👍.

Great question - could be a good video idea actually. Right away I would say just practice cross and F2L, you can get sub 10 with just those algs. But since you want to learn new algs, I would recommend COLL first. Learning all of COLL is helpful and it’s not too big of an alg set, only 40 I think. For the other algs you mentioned I would recommend learning the best cases. A lot of them involve hundreds of algs and will take a long time to make them worth it in solves.

If all the edges are not oriented on OLL then you can't use ZBLL. People may use ZBLS which is a method that gets all edges oriented while solving the last F2L pair.

Yeah it is a lot, but you only need full OLL + PLL (68 algs) to get sub 10. The key is recognizing the patterns in the algorithm, such as (R U R' U') (R' F R F') etc.

The thing with those patterns is it’s easy to remember when learning a new algorithm after learning algorithms with those patterns. Well if you just started 3 weeks ago, you shouldn't be trying to learn too many new algorithms. First get good at f2l and then slowly learn 2 look oll + pll. Just got to practice doing the algorithms over and over again until they stick. I didn't learn oll + pll till like a year after I started. Just used basic beginners method.

Thanks! pll algorithms are easier/shorter than coil and zbll. coll algorithms are easier and shorter than zbll. These are on average though, certain zbll/coll are just as short/easy as plls, but there are also some really bad ones. pll algorithms are fully optimized compared to zbll.

Yep, you can use COLL algs on 2x2, but not CLL algs on 3x3. However the CLL algs are much shorter, so not efficient to use COLL on 2x2
