How 4 days of planning my first pair has changed cubing for me: i have an interesting story about planning my first pair. I don't really know how to describe this phenomenon I had, but I will try my best. about 4 days ago i actually tried to start planning my first pair, like actually trying. i have been stuck around 15 seconds for months now, and i decided to give it a try. i would take 2 minutes on each scramble just trying to plan out where every piece moved, once i knew where they would all go, i would add an extra move to see how far ahead i could look. I immediately saw a .5-1 second difference. i woke up the next day, not expecting much, and i immediately came back where i left off. I could plan so much further ahead, but i needed about 30 seconds. I was surprised by this, one day made this much of a difference. WHAT REALLY BLEW MY MIND: I am duel color neutral (White and Yellow), but after 3 days of practicing my first pair, I am almost consistently behind 2 seconds on all crosses now. I tried for months to catch up on blue/green/orange/red, and these couple days "Unlocked" something where i can do different crosses easier (I have to attempt to plan first pair or they will be sub-par compared to W/Y.) So in 4 days total, my times have dropped from 15 average to 13.5 average, i broke my pb twice (now 8.63), broke my AO5 with 11.30, broke my AO12 with 12.39, and broke my AO50 with 13.39. If you've managed to read all this, PLEASE PLAN YOUR FIRST PAIR!!!! in DAYS it has improved my solves and i have a higher motivation to improve than ive ever had. I know its difficult, i put it off for so long, but i knew i would never make sub-10 without planning first pair. JUST DO IT!!! bonus notes: acouple days ago i wouldnt even be able to track my second pair, and now i can plan it in my scramble on easy crosses, my biggest struggle is making all the solutions to the cross + 1st f2l into one fluid motion. I cant imagine where ill be months from now. Dont waste your time trying to improve by doing the same thing. PLAN 1ST PAIR. WORK ON 2 SIDED PLL RECOGNITION. BURN EVERY ALGORITHM INTO YOUR BRAIN. and something people dont realize is much easier than you think, LEARN FULL OLL. You will improve so much quicker Thank you for reading EDIT: I just got my first sub-10 average ever. previous best was 10.29 and i got 9.73 today. (July 30, 2021)

SqUiD BrAiN this youtube channel, J Perm, has a tutorial on planning your first pair. it is a difficult process to get down, and takes quite a bit of intuition. basically, while you are doing your first step, the Cross, you watch and try to plan out where your first corner and edge will be. it is fairly complicated to explain over text but there are plenty of youtube videos over it :) good luck with your cubing process :)

I went from Badmephisto, to Cyotheking, to J Perm. Badmephisto's tutorials were revolutionary at the time. Then, Cyotheking took them to another level and added much better video quality. Now, J Perm has dethroned both of them. Cyotheking's tutorials were so good back then when he posted cubing related content consistently. I wish Cyotheking continues his cubing content, but I guess the saying "every journey has an end" applies for anything in life. Luckily, we have J Perm around and he's killing it!!! His content somehow keeps getting better and he always find ways to create original content. As long as J Perm continues his cubing tutorials, I can't see anyone come close to dethroning J Perm at all.....

Absolutely fascinating. I got my first taste of cubing in 1982 when I was 10/11 years old and Rubix was huge back then. Then I got back into it in 2005 and learned a lot of the algorithms, and even competed here in the UK (in 2012). I've managed sub 30 average, but it has been on the back burner since 2013. I've watched a few of the bigger cubing channels out there in the last few years and I pick up my 3x3 every now and then and cube for a few hours. But lately I've been missing it and now (at 49 years old) I feel like picking it up again and going even deeper with the learning, and aiming for sub 20 at some point. Your video was very inspirational.

for BLE, an easy but probably slower alternative is to use an edge commutator, like a U perm. You set up the edge you want to insert to the UF sticker, and bring its slot to the UR sticker, then you can do a u perm with an AUF prior to it, or R2 U' R2 S R2 S' U R2 and undo the set ups

For the second BLE case you showed (where all the OLL pieces are facing up), there's a much shorter alg you can use, although it uses E moves With the slot to your left and edge in front (matching with the centre) do: R' E R U' R' E' R (E moves follow same direction as D moves) You can optionally do u U' for the last E move if you find it suits you better

When I get a cross case I use COLL (or occasionally one of the few ZBLLs I know) and I can say it’s worth learning and not too difficult to learn if you know CLL on 2x2, I’m about to start learning some winter variation cases

Also a great Subset of ZBLL which is definitely worth it would be 2GLL, so all the ZBLLs that only use R and U moves, and there are 82 Cases. I think it's the only Alg Set that's worth it to learn completely.

​@@JudeStradtner Any ZBLL algorithm site will include all of these algs. I'd recommend that you start by using COLL in your solves, since 2GLL relies on being able to recognize when your corners are permuted (which is what distinguishes 2GLL from the rest of ZBLL); once you're recognizing corner permutation automatically, then I would consider 2GLL, and maybe even the rest of an easy ZBLL set (T or U.) Word of caution: If you get a sune or antisune, DON'T bother with ZB or 2GLL. Just doing the 7 move OLL into whatever PLL you get will be faster 9 times out of 10, and that one time isn't worth the other nine (or the effort that goes into learning the algs). Good luck!

I think VHLS is good if you have an L shape on top before the last pair, but honestly that can be done intuitive, so learning it is definitely not worth it

You'd be surprised! Most algs can be broken down into short "triggers," and since they each preserve the first two layers, they follow similar patterns a lot of the time.

@@khanhnguyennam6007 not my favourite PLL to say the least. I'm still getting lock-ups ~3 in 5 times I try to do it fast, not to mention failing every time I'm getting E-perm in an actual solve. I really suck at it.

@@krzysztof_jablonski try the alternative E perm alg. (F' r U R' U' r' F R) U2 (r U R' U' r' F R F') that is (bowtie OLL) U2 (fat T OLL). I'm sure good cubers can execute the standard E perm faster, but it sounds like you and I both struggled with it, and this alg completely avoids lockups. I never looked back.

Speaking of algs. Is it worth learning all the f2l algs and variants for desired slot before memorizing oll and pll? I mean yeah f2l algs seem pretty short but that'd be easily over 150 algs by my estimation. Surely it would be better to stick with intuitive f2l and learn full oil and pll, before circling back and committing to learning all those f2l algs wouldn't it? I'm just thinking the return on investment would be pretty low with f2l compared to having 2lll down. But please lmk what you think of my assumption. Thanks
