What it feels like to restart a run in Trackmania

Recently there has been some debate in the Trackmania speedrunning community whether the start timer should be shortened or not. Some people think it should because it takes a lot of time in between runs, others think it shouldn't because it is disrespectful towards the old world records. What do you guys think?

In my opinion it's a bit unfair, changing such a feature after 13 years of World Records doesn't feel right to me, but I see what you mean

@@brim5954 Changing such a feature, yes, but a feature that doesn't have anything to do with the runs themselves. You don't change anything about the physics of the game, you just change the duration of the countdown timer, which in TMUF is way too long anyways imho (2.5 seconds in TMUF is too much, 1-1.5 would be better, like in TM2020)

Wow, imagine you played a couple of hours, which means some respawns. If you tried 1000times, that means, you've lost 3000 seconds=50minutes

2600, the timer starts at -2.60. And it's not lost, it has purposes, like allow the concentration and eyes to wander for a little bit, allow to get ready again, etc. Even if it could be lowered or personalized, indeed.

What average TM speedrunner do between pressing restart button and actually leaving the start line: - Go piss - Make a breakfast - Put all trash out - Go out for a wall dog - Visit parents - Go for a vacation to another country - get a job - buy a house - get married - watch grand-children get high ed - eventually, die from oldness **looks at monitor** F$$$, 2.09 seconds left before the start

The best part is when you have a 50+sec map and like start is insane, so you drive like 4-5 sec to fail and wait for restart.... And repeat this like 500 times.... Timewasting machine xD

If you're not trying to go through speedrunning the whole of one of the in-game campaigns, it should be fine to lower the start timer considering the game only saves replays after the timer says "Go!"

To shorten the start timer, you have to use external softwares, which is technically a TAS. So yeah, you can, but under the same rules and conditions as a TAS run, whatever the other techniques are to achieve a time, be it completely legit or full TASed with TMInterface etc. edit : we have to put the line somewhere, I think that the TAS definition of "using external softwares" is a good one. This timer thing does not change physics or whatever, but traba's or riolu's cheats didn't either.

@@busTedOaS They won't. Sadly, probably. But 98 times out of 100, they won't touch it ever again if there's no game-breaking bug. Until then, tripartite stuff is needed.

Changing values to shorten respawning doesn't change the conditions the record run is set under. I would argue as long as the run is set by human inputs under normal playing conditions then you cannot call it a TAS. Your definition would invalidate users who need external software to play the game with modern controllers.

@@samh3157 It does indeed change the conditions. One has 2.6s between two runs, the other has significantly less. The game itself does not allow to dodge that start timer, so is it really "normal conditions" ? About modern controllers, I was not aware of that, it should indeed be addressed.

​@@gugus8081 The removal of respawn only allows for more runs. A user cannot issue inputs while waiting for the countdown. I would argue a run starts when a user can issue inputs.
