I agree I was living in Berlin for 7 months and when I came back to South Florida I was in reverse culture shock too. I never realized how loud Americans are until you’ve gotten used to German restaurant etiquette and then go to a restaurant in America😂. But I relate a lot to this video. While I was there I had to take a German integration course for my residence permit and started forgetting things in English! Now my brain is a mixture of both lol. Wouldn’t trade that experience for anything though as most Americans never leave the country let alone move out of it.

As a french student living in France, i'd say the rush feeling is also something we experience here all the time. I never had a 3hrs lunch break in my whole life. Always had an official 1hr break, but the time to get past all the steps before finally sitting down and enjoying your meal makes it that you're left with not even 40min in front of you... Same goes with the rush of the classes. Always had a very busy schedule from middle school to this day.

I relate to this video so much after studying in France for three months. The education system here is so much more stressful than there, it’s an incredible difference that really takes a toll on your mental health! That’s why I’ve been trying to be so much more lax with myself and I’ve been letting myself take time to spend with friends so I can have *me* time! The difference with France and America is the concept of time. Try looking up “strict time cultures” versus “flexible time cultures,” what you’re describing about time is very much a real thing!

I'm french (sorry for my broken english) and I spent 6 months in the usa few years ago and while I was looking your video I was like "this guy put words on what I have been through". Especially the feeling of "it never happened" or the "everybody speak english" (french for me) or again the "easy" thing. Anyway thanks for sharing your feeling because I think you got the things right.

Thank you! Finally someone talked about it, I lived in London for a while and when I came back home in France, it felt more weird than comforting, the culture difference was kind of shocking

Oof two months late to this video, but it's good to see you adjusting so well. It helps having family around you who understand the experiences you had that you can talk to about how things are different. I was living in France for the tailend of 11 months and coming back I struggled A LOT mentally, physically healthwise, and just socially. Of course, I found myself and liked it better there than my home country which may attribute to my continued longing even a year later. But if you ever struggle with the shock or the difference, you do notice it less and less. Feeling like you were even there is totally normal.

Hey Max, once I graduated high school and went to college I started to realize just how restrictive high school life really is. Agreeing with what you said, traditional American schools give off a sense of urgency and create rush and immense amounts of anxiety that at times can be too much to handle. This really is so strange, because now being in college, it is almost the opposite. I certainly was under the impression that college life was more intense, stressful, and demanding than a high school student could imagine, but I have yet to experience these. Although college may be more difficult than high school, the true freedom that is given outweighs such difficulty. You are actually given time to reflect from the past, present, and into the future, unlike high school, allowing you to plan out your time more efficiently. Just wanted to mention this because it seems like secondary education in France is more similar to higher education here in the states. Anyways, I have enjoyed watching your videos; the increase in subs is well deserved. :)

This comment makes me so happy and excited to start college life. I'm a senior in high school right now and everything seems to be crammed into a week's curriculum. Then comes the anxiety of quizzes and tests.

I'm from the States and I lived in Quebec for 5 1/2 years for college. I completely relate to what you were saying about it just being easier to live in a place where you can just speak. I still sometimes thinking about what I have to plan to say, and then realize that I don't need to do that anymore That was the biggest thing for me when I moved back for sure. It has made me so much more confident.

Living outside of your comfort zone is absolutely the best way to grow as a person. I lived in Korea for a year and I feel like I grew 5x while there.

This it’s so true, I was so shocked when I heard Spanish when I came back, I miss like the whole experience, the struggling to understand, and seeing something new almost every day or even the big breaks from school, and it’s so weird because you start to feel like a foreigner in your own country and that personally freaks me out

so cool to see someone who’s also from Chapel Hill to document their life and tell their stories :)

I know what you mean. I moved to the US and attended middle school there, but once I came back to Malaysia, it felt like that part of my life didn't happen at all! And then when I went to France for prep school and Uni, I felt like my soul found home, even though it was a completely different culture/language/way of life from mine. My life in France has shaped me so much, that I feel/think French after I came back to Kuala Lumpur many moons ago, and I still feel uncomfortable in my own country! My soul gets homesick for it's home but luckily I get to go back to France and visit the friends and family I've adopted along the way every 2 years or so. I'm glad you had the opportunity to live overseas. It really is the best maturing experience.

I feel like I've had a similar experience to this, but like x20. My family moved to Mexico when I was 3 years old, I called America "English land" cause the only concept I had of it was that they spoke my language. And then i did the opposite of you, I went to America for 7 months and I was pretty out of my comfort zone, because my friend group in Mexico was completely different from America. I'm just glad I was able to be homeschooled for the 7 months! Thanks for the video.

Wow I’ve never talked to anyone else that’s been on sabbatical in another country and I literally feel the exact same after coming home. It’s insane how easy it was to come home and just settle right back in. I was also inspired by Yes Theory and the idea of seeking discomfort both in going there and coming back and I just keep smiling watching this video bc it feels like you get it which is really nice.

Junior year is always the hardest. I'm currently taking 3 AP classes, running a club, and doing some extracurriculars. It always seems as if I don't have enough time. And short lunch defenitely adds to the time crunch. If we had a longer lunch, I would be able to go and manage my club business, but once I'm done eating I have 20 minutes left and that is certainly not enough time to study for the test in 6th period and go to the councelor to talk about fundraising and crap. It's either I get to eat my lunch, or I study and get other things done. I can't do both at the same time. And my AP classes are such a time commitment after school in terms of homework, I am always tired and need to nap, so I never have free time to do whatever.
