It's definitely not that. Have you ever seen a foreigner asking a Taiwanese stranger questions on the MRT? Doesn't happen. This is just fear of the "other."

After living in Taiwan for 2 years, as a black woman. I have noticed people stare at me because they are genuinely curious. Especially about my hair. It used to bother me at first, now I barely notice it. As an introvert, I enjoy when people don’t want to sit next to me 😂 because I don’t want to sit next to people either.

It is not because of your color, as a native Taiwanese I got the same treatments as well, so no worries😅

Oh Jay, your interviews are always so interesting, diverse and incisive! I know there is probably a lot of editing but I’m amazed at how many interesting people you get to meet. Each of these 3 beautiful young women, I surmise 1st from the US(?), 2nd possibly from Africa, and 3rd from France are thoughtful and well-spoken

Last 1 year, I stayed Taiwan. I am surprised how Taiwanese people have a good culture how they welcomed for me, how they helped for me and even they show me as I am not a foreign, as they deal with me as a native. I can't imagine how Taiwanese people are good and Polite people. I LOVE Taiwanese People ❤❤❤

As a black person I feel the same way about asian people. I don't get to see them that often in my part of the country. So when I see a asian Person I be staring on the down low because it's rare for me to get to see other groups of beautiful people that God has made❤❤❤
I'm hoping to visit Taiwan in a few weeks. Maybe I will run into you :)

Would it make you feel better if a white person or an Indian person going down an escalator would receive the same treatment? Taiwan is still more or less a homogeneous society where foreigners (any ethnicity even other Asians) are still a curiosity. We mean no disrespect.

May I suggest that you do an episode on how Taiwanese treats foreigner compared to their own, because it's quite different I've heard... I'm very curious from people's perspective actually living in Taiwan
@JayChenTaiwan Жыл бұрын
Interesting idea. You mean Taiwanese is friendly towards to foreigner compared to local people ?
@katarinadicamella Жыл бұрын
@@JayChenTaiwan That's right, I think in most countries people attend to treat foreigners much nicer than their own and my Taiwanese friends say local is much friendlier if you are from Europe or America, but a little less if you are from another part of Asia, I'm curious if that were true, is it a racial thing? I'm curious also why Taiwanese people seem to love Americans, I mean... a lot!! bc in Europe we have very different opinions toward Americans.
@JayChenTaiwan Жыл бұрын
@@katarinadicamella Yes. I think it's true. Especially if you are Southeast Asian. You can check this episode : kzbin.info/www/bejne/nKHbq4elo953mMU I would love to make video to talk about why Taiwanese has different attitude to different nationalities.
@laraw840 Жыл бұрын
@@katarinadicamella Majority of Taiwanese cannot differentiate the differences between Americans or Europeans. It's also not that Taiwanese people treat Americans better but rather, Taiwanese people do treat foreign visitors with higher degrees of welcoming courtesy generally. I think the real answer to your question, in my opinion, is that the mass media in Taiwan is completely biased and screwed. You don't see diverse news outlets or sources of information coming from different parts of the world at all. For the majority of Taiwanese, CNN, BCC, CNBC...etc. represent the WHOLE worldview. They are under the spell that news reporting of CNN BBC or New York Times..etc. is not biased, is trustworthy, and tells nothing but the truth. When you are exposed to the American mentality decades on ( (BBC's narratives lean heavily toward American views so I don't think BBC represents European views at all,) this is what you get - leaning toward the Americans, and people generally don't challenge Western (i.e. American) views/stories. There is also Zero representation of views from the whole Global South.
@katarinadicamella Жыл бұрын
@@laraw840 yes, after reading your response I get why they praise Americans so much! I do feel also they lack of diversity especially when you try to have a conversation with them, talk about what's going on in the world and particularly cultural differences, and different races of people, to me I feel perhaps they are not as liberal as they think, compares to some other Asian countries. I wish the Taiwanese gov would encourage their people to leave Taiwan, out exploring, perhaps that would help to expand their vision to a more global perspective, rather than relying on a few particular sources as you said!
