A LEESU, has amazing benefits in African culture,in Uganda, a leesu is like a recommended accompaniment of an attire on a daily basis ,to the extent that even when you dont tie it on you while going out ,atleast it must be in a lady's bag,for it can be used to protect your main outfit from getting dirty easily before your final destination.its like a secondary protection . It also does as a mat in case the only option is to sit on the ground. When african women are preparing food in big events ,they're expected to wrap a leesu to avoid the fashioned designs of different cloths to hunger in the cooked food items as a leesu gathers everything inside .

I'm South African 🇿🇦 I don't normally cook spicy food. I don't even think I've came across a traditional dish that was spicy to be honest😅😅. I'm convinced my particular traditional food is bland at least from my culture. Although South Africa is so diverse. The leso that women wear to wrap around the waist are mostly to protect us from not showing our skin when working around the house such as bending to mopping the floor, sweeping, washing clothes, also it help to cover when on trip you know girls or women we have to protect our body and not to expose ourselves it is just a good manner. When it comes to unexpected things you can find during accident people look for women to cover the body that was on bad accident. It may use to wrap a child who is sick, carrying a child etc. You might wear a tight dress, skirt or long pants and suddenly it torned off you know what will protect you during moment like this, well it is your leso you carried in your bag or arm or around your neck. Yap I remember the moment uaenda mwezini unexpected [monthly period] visit you unprepared. .....now you messed up your nice dress, you ll feel embarrassed right but at least you have a wrap to cover you. Also you know for us East Africans women we can't go to our inlaws parents and elderly and show off our thighs when saving them or working in the kitchen, we need wrap ourselves around the waist....Annette you mom has truly raised you well. She need a special gift. We have values and you honored them well around the world. Leso, Kanga, Kitenge always have one next to you. Also I liked that you cook home food and your hubby likes all about ugali, kachumbari, sukuma week, nyama choma, viazi vitam/ sweet potatoes etc here in USA we even have magimbi/ kiazi Kikuu, mihogo/ cassava and all kind of traditional food. I can send you something from here if you really missed home food that you don't have there in Germany. Stay blessed.

I come from Uganda just a neighborhood to Kenya but I have grown up eating food cooked with various spices like curry powder,cinnamon, ginger,etc but chilli not .actually chilli in food of most a African homes is by choice cant be put in the food for the whole family,whoever want chilli can only put it in his or her own plate but not prepared in the whole dish where everyone in the house has to eat from ,reason for that is that we are putting in consideration the young children at home who cant tolerate it .I used not to eat it too since childhood, I just got familiar when I traveled to india as I had no choice but still I dont eat it on a daily basis . actually Chilli is not good for use on a daily basis healthwise especially for people in reproductive age. In my days growing up in Jamaica we used vaseline for everything, to soothe cuts and burns, on chapped lips, for hair oil, for babies chafing/diaper rash, to line your hair edge before a perm, for everything! LOL

Annette, what you mentioned about cold weather is disastrous for me too. When it's winter in Turkey, I run🤣🤣🤣🤣, chilli food for me is a no! Most Kenyans too. Vaseline is a must.
