Yeah, this lady has only been a passenger on a couple VIP flights (which aren't normal) -- she's probably not the best person to give the rundown on what it's like in a Black Hawk. She got to wear headphones so they must of liked her. My paks got to sit in the back with their own little orange earplugs in (if they remembered them) getting blasted by the wind, because I liked to go doors open -- especially when carrying unwashed infantry-types.

A supposedly « VIP priority transport » helo crew and on a training/evaluation mission with no passengers ran into the protected final approach path of an airliner for fault of being modest and careful enough to double check before asserting they were watching the proper incoming traffic, which was coming from a totally different direction than what they wrongly thought. Arrogance and cockiness and carelessness killed 64 civilians.

What about in the middle of a sea of city lights in the early evening with traffic jams everywhere, and in the middle of the approach paths to a busy airport?? Sounds great. Or maybe wearing NVGs brings extra bonus per flight hour, regardless of being used exactly for what it was never designed ??

Evaluation flight : failed. Evaluating instructor’s mission : failed. VIP passengers loss : zero. Just a minor incident. Soldiers need to take risks for proper training. Let’s move on. This is just insanity.

Hegseth certainly seems to be implying here that the collision was the fault of the helicopter and an 'elevation issue' it encountered, as opposed to a vector error by either the helicopter or the passenger aircraft. Is he aware of something not yet divulged 'in terms' to the public, or is he just speculating? Given the specificity of the word 'elevation', it sounds like the former to me. How long before the DoD 'comes clean', or is Hegseth misleading us?

The Copter in route 1 was at 200' rp to the bridge-after its 300' so the copter was ascending from 200 to 300 while the RJ was descending form 500 to 300' at the bridge where the copter struck it. It appears to me the copter pilot with NV had an elevation visual problem as he was looking at the plane coming in behind the one on top of him! Accident----bad, but an accident.

@@nadajnik_DX I suspect that, like me, you presumed an elevation issue to relate to a problem with the helicopter's ability to rise and descend, not to the inability of the helicopter crew to see the plane. I have a feeling that Hegseth thought the same as us.

@edmund2j 8 күн бұрын
It's already an established fact (based on the videos of the com between the Helo and the tower and radar) that the copter was flying above the 200 feet altitude ceiling. The CRJ is already descending as expected. It's a head on collision and the copter was at fault.

No matter where you at in the states you are going to see a military aircraft using civilian airports for fuel etc. my hometown is small and the army aircraft stop there for fuel. What’s so hard about that! The military is keeping a lot of these small airports in business . Ex army aviation guy here!

I DO HAVE THE ONLY CRUCIAL IN MY OPINION QUESTION: HOW MANY HOURS OF TRAINING FLIGHTS IN DAYLIGHT (!!!) TIME THIS PARTICULAR PILOT FLEW OVER EXACTLY THE SAME AREA BEFORE AND HOW MUCH LOCAL EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE ABOUT LOCAL CONDITIONS HE DID ACTUALLY COULD GAIN BEFORE IN HIS ROUTINE TRAINING FLIGHTS IN DAYLIGHT? ANOTHER WORDS - HOW FAMILIAR WITH THIS AREA'S FLYING CONDITIONS AND AIR TRAFFIC HE ACTUALLY WAS - HENCE HOW COMFORTABLE HE COULD FEEL AT CONTROLS WHILE FLYING THIS MACHINE AT NIGHT TIME JUST BEFORE AND AT THE MOMENT OF CRASH IN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT AND MUCH MORE DIFFICULT NIGHT CONDITION OF BUSY AIR TRAFFIC?!
