I see so many comments about his non-biological father's feeling. What about the boy's feeling who happens to be a transgender? Nobody wants to know why? He hurt himself too by hiding all his pain through the years and now he is being who he is and nobody even takes a look at him. Instead, they blamed him even cursed him for being a transgender. That's PATHETIC!

The older generations especially back then usually (usually, but some were also pro lgbt) only tolerated gays at best, but even less respected transgenders. It’s likely worse because this is televised in front of a huge crowd and not talked about to an actual therapist. edit: this video is also probably recorded only around or just before gay marraige was made legal nationwide, which only further proves my point

The problem is that she didn’t announce that she wanted to become a woman much earlier to show her slowly transitioning. Having her come out like that with basically no warning is a huge gut punch to anyone who witnesses it out of nowhere for someone she grew up with extremely closely. This also shouldn’t have been shown publicly either, this is very much something that should’ve happened privately over the course of months until the transition is complete. It’s a very sensitive topic to people who actually care about you. Don’t make anyone think that they failed you or that you failed them, you need to let them know that it’s just simp,y what you want. That’s the key difference. Screw Dr. Phil for allowing such a personal event to be shown to everyone for monetary gain and the exposure of a persons pain forever.

Exactly. The shock of the father, who'd obviously would react like that if someone just did a 180 on everything you held true about them. Is being cashed in on by Phil. The guy is grieving losing his 'son' or his specific reality first...THEN - he can move on to the possibility of accepting a daughter. There are many stages to this....all laden with powerfully conflicting emotions. And they're sensationalizing this very painful moment. FOR RATINGS. How very disrespectful!

It's hard to come out as trans from a young age when you don't have any way of knowing what's going on. I knew from a young age that I was trans as well, but I didn't have the language. I bound my chest as it began to develop, and I dressed "like a tomboy". I was so uncomfortable in my own skin, and deep down wished I was a boy more than anything, but I thought everyone felt like that, and I should just get over it. It wasn't until I was 14 that I learned about trans men, and I finally had a word to describe what I felt: gender dysphoria. I couldn't come out. I was in the rural south, and my parents outright told me from a young age that if I was ever gay they'd disown me. I'm pretty sure if I had come out, I would've been sent to conversion therapy. When I turned 19, I left, and I haven't contacted my family since. There is no way that I would ever be accepted as a son, or a man, and I have finally reached a point where I respect myself too much to allow the constant disrespect I faced like I did growing up. I've since been able to transition in relative peace, and I am blooming as I slowly become more and more myself and become more and more comfortable with my body as I medically transition. The transition of transgender people is not about the people in our lives. It's not an attack, or a "gut punch". If you're really that upset about it, you should seek therapy, because that is not a normal reaction to someone making choices about their own body.

I don't know there is a difference between having trans friends or supporting LGBTQ community to having someone in your family very close to you tell you they are going to transition. He is probably scared for his child, angry that he is losing a son, confused about why it happen, regretful that his son has been in pain all these years, upset at himself for feeling this way and not being more supportive but he still loves her/him. Until he grieves the lost of his son and all those memories and expectations he will not be able to accept that he has gain a daughter who is still the same person he has loved and raised and will be able to make more memories with, so I understand.

You know it is very very difficult to change someone's belief that they've had for decades. I don't really blame them since when we get old the young ones probably would call us out on something we deeply believe in. As long as they still give respect and be civil that's all that matters, we shouldn't be asking for too much.
