Gay people in America overwhelmingly vote for Democrats and have done so for decades. But they aren’t a monolithic group. In our second episode of “Political Outliers,” meet two gay Republicans - one in his 20s and one in his 60s - who have been lifelong conservatives. Hear how they developed their political ideologies and which issues motivate them to stay loyal to the GOP.

That is a boomer argument which makes it automatically wrong. Both the homosexual and heterosexual members of that generation slutted it up during the 1970s and then left every generation after it to deal with the consequences of their actions while engaging in the largest act of generational wealth hoarding in history. I’m a capitalist through and through, but let me tell you, that ain’t capitalism. It’s an incoherent mishmash of contradictory legislation that never should’ve been passed and needs to be repealed. The implication that Gay people are one issue voters is so offensive. It is not even worth taking seriously intellectually. It’s not the 90s anymore. GOP conventions now get better Gays but we’re celebrities. Going from Pat Buchanan into Peter Thiel is a step up. Going from Ricky Schroder to Scott Baio is a step down. Going from George W. Bush to Donald Trump is a huge step up. That former Olympic athlete who killed a woman and now expects us to call him one is a step down for Californians when we could’ve had Larry Elder. That’s the one thing I will never forgive log cabin for as an organization. They don’t seem too particularly interested in promoting either homosexuality or conservatism. What good is government at all if this is the end result? Now I know how the French feel felt when the Nazis occupied France! This is not my country anymore. I want the country I was born in back. I want the country I fought for my civil rights in back. I want a country where I cannot only marry my husband, but afford to support both of us. If I have to vote for Donald Trump to get that, then so be it. Nobody else is offering anything better.

Yes but having been gay, has given me greater empathy for other people, who are marginalized, in this country. And the vast majority of gay men feel this way, that’s why they vote Democrat. Republicans have them us and them attitude towards people who are different, and very little if any empathy for others, until it happens to them. 4:03

I guess its easier to be gay and Republican in states that have protections for lgbtq people (California & New Mexico). Here in Idaho if I wanted to work in a town other than the state capital I could lose my job because I'm gay. They have privileges that many lgbtq people in conservative areas don't have. Correction as others have stated in 2020 the supreme courts decided it was unconstitutional to fire someone for being gay, a fact I forgot but there are still many rights like adoption and trans rights that red states deny to this day.

I can't wrap my head around the idea of a conservative LGBTQ person. For the average American sure, I can see how they could sway between the two. But for LGBTQ the conservative party doesn't want them. It's like showing up to a party you weren't invited to and being asked to leave but still talking about how awesome the party thrower is. Like what. Texas is the most obvious example. The Texas GOP platform that said homosexuality is an *abnormal lifestyle choice.* They wouldn't let the Log Cabin Republicans have a booth at their convention. The Texas Supreme court ruled a while back that spouses weren't eligible for spousal benefits even if they were married. There's no protections for housing discrimination. They refuse to repeal the sodomy law. That doesn't even touch on the rhetoric they spew or the attacks on trans people.

Why do voters have party affiliations in the US? I understand some wanting to be members of a party - happens here in Canada. But most Canadians are not affiliated to any party. I find it strange that so many Americans (based on my impression) identify as Republican or Democrat, as opposed to conservative or liberal, for example (understanding that they are not synonymous). It’s sort of like the parties are sports teams and they are their loyal and enthusiastic fans. Why is party affiliation core or even part of anyones identity? I don’t understand. Edit: I suppose I do understand (it appeals to human tribal instincts), but I can’t relate.

Some states force you too choose a party so you can only vote in that party's primary. Other states don't, but pollsters will ask anyway. For example I'm not officially part of the Democratic Party as my state has an open primary system, but I would say I was a Democrat if anyone asked because I almost always vote Democratic. Iirc Canada doesn't have primaries right? Therefore if you're a member of the Liberal party or whatever that means you're actually a member of an organization as opposed to you just ticking the Liberal party box when you vote.

But D/R and liberal/conservative ARE functionally synonymous for most Americans. The parties are diametrically opposed to each other’s views on many issues and there is no viable third option. If you are liberal, there is only one party that is likely to consistently represent your views. Same if you are conservative. So D vs. R might all well be liberal vs. conservative, at least in national races.

I recently left the Democratic Party and switched to “non-affiliated”. At Middle age, I’m much more attracted to conservative men now. People forget that Trump was a Democrat for 9 years before he switched. His problem is that he is a malignant narcissist for whom party affiliation means relatively little. The Republican Party should never have hitched their wagon to him. On top of that, any president or political analyst will tell you that party label means actually relatively little politically when you are running for PUSA because at the executive level you have to try and work with both parties to get ANYTHING passed 🙄 so whichever party you run with just has to support you from behind with (dot..dot…dot) TONS OF MONEY (this is America after all🙄). I would argue that neither party is particularly great for LGBT issues, but the Democratic Party has a better image machine for the LGBT community…THATS basically it. People act like there are not LGBT democrats that feel jilted by their party…GIMME A BREAK 🙄…I was in a Gay LTR for 20 years and never married my partner after discussing it many times…He could not stop deficit spending (like a Republican even though he was a Democrat😂🤬) I wasn’t going to marry his debt or let him marry mine (I got out of my debt tho)…marrying a spendthrift was not a vow I was willing to take. That’s kinda why “gay marriage” on the “social aspect” is not really a talking point for many true conservatives. If you are financially independent then that union should be double the strength socially and financially, but that isn’t always the case when two people get married whether they are gay or not. Democrats react harshly to Republican Narcissistic projections which is the extreme wing of the party…that is out of hand. No one will disagree that both parties have ignorant narcissists that project stupidly. That is just American politics for headlines….we live in an age of outrageous narcissism, mainly amplified by social media. Even I am contributor AND victim of it. Get over it. Get under it. Move to the side of it. That’s it.

@Gwyrddu

@@jovanicamarena2637 So Pew Research, like people's opinion on whether the parties have moved left or right? Because I think this is an example where polling isn't going to tell you anything about where the parties stand, only people's opinion on where they stand. No, the only way to get a real understanding where the parties stand is to look at the platforms, issues and legislation. And from that perspective Democrats hardly have moved at all (except on some social issues like gay marriage). Even things like M4A which Biden is opposed to and has no chance of getting anywhere in congress, Bill Clinton was trying to pass something similar in the 90's. There are some people on left who may deserve the title of radical, but it's just inaccurate to that apply that title to the Democratic party. As a very political gay man who left the Republican part over 45 years ago, I'm unsure why such superficial "reporting" is hosted by 538. I have long been a fan of 538, because it's a reliable source of quantitative political analysis, arguably one of the best sources available to non-professionals. This type of puffy clickbait is available from countless other places, many of which do a far better job. (It's becoming difficult to keep 538 on my essential subscriptions list.)

Republicans are mostly Christian evangelicals. They do not like lgbtq community. Red states like Texas are creating laws to criminalize parents for supporting their children’s gender preference. You do not see this with blue states. If not for federal court rulings red states would definitely take away gay marriage rights and the recognition there of. Now that there are conservative majority in the Supreme Court we will see what becomes of the LGBTQ rights. The ideology of Republican Party goes against the self interest of homosexuals. I can’t name a red state that have created laws to protect the LGBTQ except blue states.

As an HIV+ gay man, I can tell you it's been hard to come out as gay, and hard to disclose my HIV status. I've faced bigotry over both. But as a gay man who isn't a leftist, the bigotry I've faced has been WAY worse. I've had to live in a whole new closet just to have gay friends. They pat themselves on the back as being tolerant and valuing diversity, but leftists are probably the most INtolerant, bigoted people I've had to deal with. The moment they find out that I question any of the leftist narrative, I'm labeled a nazi and met with such incredible hatred. Republicans and conservatives have demonstrated way more tolerance and acceptance of me than leftists do.
