Profile/Portrait Interview Project 2019::
Choose a subject for a profile interview that will be told through "their words". Refer to the examples from class as well as the professional training series video for the style and look that your interview should have. I'm looking for your creative presentation of your subject. This piece should be something that could stand alone within the context of a feature based magazine show, a documentary--even a short film. All the familiar assessment standards are in play: videography, editing, audio, content creation and employability.
In addition, these learning targets will be be included into their applicable standard areas: cutaways and B-roll associated with the subject's story, high quality audio captured with proper microphone (or external source), use of creative editing technique (J-cuts) so your sequence will flow. Remember, visuals drive the interview, we should be able to play your piece without audio and have a really good idea of what your interview is about!
- Minimum length of 2 minutes; maximum length of 4 mins.
- MUST INCLUDE SELF INTRODUCTION LINE: "Hi I am..."
- Create a list of questions to "guide" your subject through their interview.
- Create a shot list that you know you will include in your interview.
- Choose a proper setting(s) for your subject to be interviewed in.
- Be aware of any organic "in the moment" shots you may want to capture while your interview takes place.
- Remember, also, that it's completely appropriate to use subtle direction and have subjects repeat responses for the sake of a different camera angle or capturing action and reaction.
Profile/Portrait Interview Project is due: WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2019

If your dad is a funeral home director, it is his job, the career he chose. It's not like you get the job by simply applying. It requires several years of schooling. I have lived in small towns that have 2 funeral homes in business. They are needed...none of us are immortal.

I grew up with a girl whose father worked for a funeral home, and their apartment was actually above the home. No one thought anything about it; it wasn’t considered odd by anyone. It’s just the way it was!

I say be afraid of both, the living is physical and the dead don't always move along therefore we have spirits still hanging around too. Anyone that's ever had to deal with that know what I'm talking about.

Asking a question like this, what's it like living in a funeral home, you get a good, respectable and every sane answer. Creepy. That's what it would be like living in a funeral home. Don't much think I would want to live in there, especally, when there is someone dead laying in a casket down below in the viewing room. And yes, as my mother has said, It isn't the dead that will harm you, it's the living. Still, the thought of someone dead downstairs laying in a casket, well, you get my drift.

Neighbor's growing up owned a family funeral home. The kids as young as 4 would go there and clean the place. Vacuum the rugs. Empty the trash like it was nothing. They would also help as needed when they got older as apprentice's. All of them ended up as director's. Then the grandpa and grandma died that owned it. The kids did all the prep on their bodies like they was just another customer. I thought that was weird.

I was born in 62' and You Are Older Than Dirt! Guess my chances with a 40 something is obsolete. My hat though is off to you, takes a special kind of love to do your job truly. When my wife passed I couldn't of had a nicer funeral director care as much as they did, quite the compassion role you have to bring.

Funeral directors are good citizens of their communities and well respected. It’s a generational business and they put a lot of their profits back into their business. Some are getting ready for the times of the $2500.00 funeral and still cater to the family’s that want to spend upwards of $7500.00. Big funeral coaches costing upwards of a $100,000.00 are a thing of the past. Cremation is now over 60% . Celebrations of life are replacing church funerals as organized religion isn’t what it used to be. It’s whole new era.
