I did it too for 3 seasons. First two were fun. By the third I didn't care if it all burned, so I got out. Frankly I thought it paid really well for being just a kid, but couldn't see making it a career. Probably the problem now is that all the crews are spread so thin. That should drive up the wages and and attract more workers.

@derpAcola I'm talking about forest firefighters. A hotshot position can easily make $40k in just 6 months (fire season). Now that the federal minimum wage is $15hr. That will go up even more. Most firefighters doing forest fire fighting are blm or forest service. They work 16hr+ days. Plus hazard and overtime. Yeah they make good money

As the cost of wildfires, water shortages and crop failures increase perhaps this idea will have a following: Every year the Missouri and Mississippi rivers flood hundreds of cities and farms across the Midwest. Why not build large pipelines to pump that floodwater to the drought prone Southwest? That's not considering the cost of the flood damage.

@@KILLKING110 you got a few things wrong here. First they aren't called controlled fires anymore since fire can't be controlled. Now they are called prescribed fires. Also the locals always put up fusses and won't let prescribe fires. OP is right. We need more of them. But small towns don't want to risk it getting out of control or getting more smoke. In reality we need to do them to prevent mega fires. Most prescribe fires happen in the spring and fall time to try and prevent them from getting out of hand. They also try to keep them small.

@@stevekissel605 take another look at the part where he says it looks like graveyard. That patch of land he's on was obviously a logging operation--and a relatively recent one too. Look at all the flat-topped stumps; fire doesn't do that, and neither do firemen. Look how spaced out everything is. Look at all the patches of undisturbed dirt. All those things should indicate to you that there was very little fuel here for the forest fire to consume. A strip-cut stretch of land like that is about as clean as a forest could possibly be. But everything we see is burned regardless. What stronger evidence would you need to see that your logging and forest management theory is bunk? What better proof could there be that you're wrong? Staring right at you is a perfectly cleaned plot of land--and not insignificant in size either--that didn't do a damned thing against the progress of that fire..
