A newly-created experience in North Yorkshire will allow members of the public to have a taste of what it is like to fly in a 1930s British biplane. Introduced in 1932 and retired in 1959, the De Havilland Tiger Moth was used to train young airmen before they headed off to war. It was adapted for the military from the Gypsy Moth, giving the instructor greater access, enabling them to bale out when the student got it wrong.

In the 1960s I attended the RAF Aircrew Selection Board at RAF Biggin Hill. Having failed the medical (eyesight) I disconsolately wandered around the airfield and found a firm flying joyrides in a Tiger Moth and asked how much? The answer was at least double what I had. The owner took pity. One of the most memorable flights of my life.

Greetings from across the pond! My family used to own a DH-82a Tiger serial no. Pg676. Was one of two in the states. Loved it! She was the most wonderful machine to fly. I rarely used the spring on wing airspeed indicator. Just listen to wind whistle through the flying wires! Ah the sweet memories of sounds and smells of N5882!

My Dad, learned to fly in one of there beauties during WW11 in the RCAF, he said it was the biggest thrill of his life..The sound, the freedom. He went on as a Flying Officer, Navigator, in a Halifax Bomber, 429 SQ, RCAF, 32 missions against the enemy..

My grandad was also in the RCAF! Just not a pilot, he was an aero mechanic. He was deployed to alliford bay in BC as a coastal protection fleet of biplanes and bombers. He went to st Thomas technical school and apparently according to a newspaper clip I found, had the highest aero engineering marks ever recorded at the school! One time an Aussie pilot took him up in tiger moth and he loved it! (Although halfway through he was pretty sick because the pilot kept doing barrel roles 😂) Just thought I would share that with you! Since your dad was also in the rcaf in wwii.

My first flight in a light aircraft was in an all original Tiger Moth.(communication was via a plastic speaking tube.) It belonged to a friend of my fathers who was an ww11 ex Beaufighter pilot.. After all these years and many flight hours nothing compares to that flight.

I've flown in one of these at GoFly Salisbury (G-ANNG affectionately known as Angie). My flight WAS aerobatic and can be seen on my KZbin channel. I used my Tiger Moth flight as a practice flight for another aerobatic bi-plane flight that I had booked. I had booked an aerobatic wingwalk on top of a Boeing Stearman but wanted to feel the thrill of the loops from inside the cockpit first. All of my bi-plane flights were absolutely marvelous! 3 out of 4 of my bi-plane flights have been top wing flights!

Did quite a bit of flying in the DH82A Tiger Moth. Not a bad spraying aircraft for large crops. Wouldn't operate one without the manual control slats that are set up on the top wing. A Tibetan pray wheel is also handy, as there are many times one is looking at the airspeed indicator where the pointer is on zero!!

I had an aerobatic flight in a Tiger Moth which can be seen on my channel. It was fantastic! I used it as a 'feeler' for something else that I had already booked - an aerobatic wingwalk atop a 1942 Boeing Stearman! I'd already done a non-aerobatic wingwalk but I wanted to see if I could cope with the loops and stall turns while sat inside the plane first. I coped just fine with the aerobatics on my Tiger Moth flight and not only have I gone on to do two aerobatic wingwalks I have also gone on to do airshow quality aerobatics in the Extra 300 pulling +8 and -5g's. Oh I've fallen out of planes on 3 occasions too. Conventional flight is just SO BORING!

I can remember as a kid growing up in the early 1970's, seeing these quite regularly, flying around in the summer skies, and one used to spray the local farmer's fields and put on an aerobatic display whilst he was about it...

If you haven't flown in one since your comment try GoFly at Salisbury if you are in the UK. I did and my flight can be seen on my KZbin channel. My flight WAS aerobatic with two loops and a stall turn. You do have to pay a little bit extra for the aerobatics. I wanted to experience aerobatics inside the plane before experiencing aerobatics while stood ON THE TOP WING of a Boeing Stearman bi-plane! Oh yes! Stall turns, loops and barrel rolls while stood on the top wing is just epic FUN!

i DONT AGREE WITH YOUR COMMENT ON THE FACT YOU WOULD FLY THE DH82A BUT WON'T SPIN IT. My friend you always need to spin a Tiger Moth airframe on a regulairly basics , as it's the only way you can keep track of the airframe maintenance..

Hello, I am from Uruguay, 84. You could find some T.M. here in the thirties/forties. They were Army's, used for transport and even medical & rescue purposes. Uruguay was a solid DeHavilland customer back then: Tiger Moths, Chipmunks, Rapides, etc. were spotted here. I still remember the name of the DH rep.: Mr MacDougall.
