Esha Alwani began writing songs when she was six years old, shortly after being diagnosed with Tourette syndrome. And she noticed something amazing: whenever she played music, her involuntary tics suddenly went away. Listen along as Alwani explores the power of music and delights the audience with an ethereal performance of her piano ballad "I'm Not Loving You (My Mask)."

This is the kind of TEDS talks that I really enjoy. It's nice to hear someone eloquently tell people about their affliction. Tourette's being like the hiccups and living with that your whole life would be quite a challenge. At least her tics sounds like a cute woodland animal, lol. Her voice is amazing too! Hope to hear more from her in the future.

Really interesting to watch. I noticed she tics a lot more when she talks about her condition. When she talks about how music has freed her, her tic frequency is remarkably reduced. I can imagine she has practiced a lot, as freeing her from her incessant distress would have been a considerable motivator.

I can't help be feel it's to some extent exaggerated. Like, there were some key moments where she seemed to purposefully to it for emphasis. These were in contrast to other moments when it seemed to occur spontaneously. It doesn't take away from her message, but is interesting nonetheless.

Yes! I believe that for most people with Tourette's talking about and listening to stories and explanations of the diagnosis make us more conscious of our tics and therefore result in them surfacing more often.

@@michaeldelgadillo6510 I wish you the best of luck, and hope I get to see your presentation. It might take some time: these talks work in part because they're polished and at least decently produced. Don't get discouraged as you discover what it takes to put that together. Like the martial arts you're no doubt always striving to master further, or any other discipline for that matter, there's more to a presentation and video and audio production than is apparent to the uninitiated. Like any experience, the learning process is as much about oneself as about the subject, and it might even give you new perspective on the martial arts you love.

this song is so touching. So many people don't understand. Tourette's and our tics. They even go as far as to think it's our. Actual behaivior. When it's not. My first girlfriend broke up with me because of my tics. I thought i could trust her Oh well It's a huge win for me and I'm the same way music calms my tics down almost instantly. I love music. It's worked better than any medication I've taken and like she said about the medications she took. I also lost my ability to use my legs and was wheelchair bound. I never took any medications after that. people with Tourette's already can't control their bodies so why take something or drink something that stops the tics but takes away another part I love my tics and 🎶 they make me who i am.

A recent Swiss study even concluded that playing hip hop to maturing cheese made them taste better in the end. People just keep finding more and more good things about music and more uses for it, too. Maybe it's just the nature of all matter, all those vibrating little particles getting all excited when they are exposed to the right kind of sound vibrations. :)

I have Tourette’s, similar to what she described when she was young. Most of the time it’s a head jerk or a shoulder spasm. At one point, my shoulder tics got so bad that I couldn’t lift a gallon of milk because my arm was so sore and weak (like after a hard upper body workout). Medication for me just made it worse. Music definitely helped me control/suppress a lot of it. I got really into metal music, and played drums/guitar in a few bands. For anybody who is struggling with Tourette’s syndrome, find something you enjoy that allows you to tune out, and engage in that routinely. It can do wonders.

@@juliavanderkris5156 The involuntary swearing is not a myth but is actually a real tic that a percentage of people with Tourette actually have. Like all tics it's caused by a misfiring of neurons (chemical signals) to the body. This tic surfaces some cases but not all cases. It's definitely real though!

I used to have severe Tourette’s until I tried CBIT. Now I can fully control my tics. I know it doesn’t work for everyone, but I really recommend trying it, if you’re struggling with really bad tics!

JOLT CBIT stands for Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics! Basically, you train your brain to reroute the tics so they don’t happen anymore. It’s a really fantastic therapy that truly changed my life. I highly recommend it for people who need to get their tics under control.

JOLT the cool thing is that it’s the opposite of repressing the tics. (I used to get hour long tic attacks when I would repress tics during high school... not fun.) CBIT reroutes the tics in such a way that they not only stop that tic, but they also enable you to stop other tics as well just by what your brain starts to do on its own. It’s pretty incredible.

Well, I'll say that she is an amazing girl, I've seen many motivation videos but in this one, motivation is implied in the context I mean it's a secret and a really interesting perspective about how to restart working on a cure or treatment for these kind of syndromes which are even today a mystery for science as far as I've heard.

I was never diagnosed with Tourette’s but I have tics. They’ve gotten less severe over time but I have the eye rolling, neck cranking and squeaking. Some days are better than others but they can get quite annoying

I can stop my hiccups every time...I just relax my diaphragm, take long slow breaths and concentrate on the next hiccup. When I start feeling the next hiccup coming, I focus on slow, steady, deep breathing and somehow tell my diaphragm "just ignore it...don't do it"... I deny it from happening. Once the first hiccup is denied, the spasms stop. +++

It is nice to see some attention shown to my disease aside from the comic relief it is used for in tv and movies. Most do not realize tourette's can be deadly to those who suffer worst. RA, siezures, and many other things await us who get to love to the ripe old age of 45 to 50. And those start in the single digit ages j i st to get worse over time. Marijuana and something to concentrate on are the best helpers for us. But she is right, there is no treatment let alone a cure.

As someone with Tourette’s, I would say it’s more like an itch than it is like hiccups. Hiccups are completely involuntary, and although it seems like Tourette’s is also completely involuntary, it’s more like an insatiable itch that has to be scratched. And to a certain extent, it can be delayed or suppressed with some mental effort.

It appears that focusing on another activity overrides Tourettes's symptoms. While Esha was speaking, she had symptoms only between thoughts - her symptoms never interrupted her speech mid-word. Playing music while singing would, unlike speech, cause uninterrupted focus and thus no Tourette's symptoms.
@EshaAlwani
@EshaAlwani 5 жыл бұрын
100% right! While music has a scientific and long term effect on our brains and neurological symptoms, virtually any focus-based activity could have the power to temporarily relive a person of their tics!
