I have been reviewing and reviewing for a while and keep coming back to the Ford Explorer ST because of the power to weight ratio and the rear wheel drive. I know the ST is a 4 wheel drive but I like the fact that it's a rear wheel drive with added front wheel drive, and not a front wheel drive with added rear wheel drive. The engine is mounted along the frame, not across the frame. I'm also looking at the Genesis GV80 (high end Hyundai, rear wheel drive, twin turbo 3.5 liter V6 with 375 HP) also the Chevy Tahoe high country and the GMC Yukon Denali (both with the 6.2 Liter donks). But the Tahoe and Yukon are much more expensive and don't have as good a power to weight ratio as the Explorer. I have looked at the Durango SRT, and do like the idea of a big V8, but it's much heavier than the Explorer and is a gas guzzler.

You will never see 19 mpg on a yukon or tahoe--I turned one in they gave me as a rental one time--for a free upgrade and turned it in for a nissan kick or smaller SUV simply because of the atrocious gas mileage--12 mpg I was at and did not want to spend more on gas then the rental and I did not need the extra room.Luckily I rented it early in the day and ran some errands and it just DRANK gas and turned it in.I would consider this as my next vehicle because I ebike now and will need something like this to be able to put my bike in.I have a few years though because I just got a KIIA Stinger last year--and wait for Ford to get rid of the kinks--maybe a refresh in 2024.

I love my 23" now that we figured out what that annoying clunk was coming from the front end. It took two trips to the dealership and a loaner car, but I got it back and while they were removing the right front strut for replacement they noticed the upper bearing had separated. So they installed a new RF strut, upper bearing, strut mount, and did an alignment. Reading through the invoice it says “Found SSM 52405 for front strut noise and vehicle falls within build date of SSM criteria" So Ford is aware of this issue somewhere along the line. I know a lot of folks are experiencing this same issue and no one seemed to have a solution I could find. Except that the dealerships were telling them it was normal. DON'T buy that crap if yours is making what sounds like a strut or ball joint noise from the front end!! This SUV runs like a bat out of hell, especially in sport mode. It has a stiff ride and handles like a go cart instead of a 4600lb SUV.

@Jack njones well, if I was to spend the $$ to have an electronic tune, I'd also splurge for the 3" mandrel stainless steel exhaust, headers, performance plenum & mass air flow sensor, with a cold air intake. This would be teetering on the edge of voiding the warranty, unless purchased in stage 1-2 from dealer. I'll research this further, the closer I am to getting 1 of these fuck'n beastly Explorers!
@Worm976
@Worm976 4 жыл бұрын
SVT and Ford Performance are two different different sectors of ford, from what I’m told. 5startuning has already broke the 500 mark with just tuning on e50. Give it time, people will figure out what turbos you can bolt on and get massive gains.
@fobbitoperator3620
@fobbitoperator3620 4 жыл бұрын
@Jack njones It's 1 way to go, that's for sure. You might even get a "returning customer discount," if you install a complete exhaust, cold air intake, high performance plenum, & mass air flow sensor, then re-flash a new tune on your ECU. Sky's the limit, if you a gear-head!

That’s what annoys me about Ford (and GM, Chrysler)... they released that vehicle with a seriously underperforming digital cluster. Someone signed off on it as being ok. Geezus, I actually had this vehicle on my list to look at. Not now. Not at that price point. I could get an entry level German suv with a better performing system. Unreal..
@CycoWarriorx
@CycoWarriorx 4 жыл бұрын
Jack njones Its not just the cluster; it’s their emphasis on pushing a car off the line as opposed to ensuring they have a quality build before it leaves. This includes the electronics. You won’t see misaligned seams on a German or even Japanese car, nor release a vehicle with a seriously slow cluster. I left Tata’s Range Rover out of the group and their infotainment systems in general because they are slow but not demonstratively slow. My bad tho, I didn’t think I needed to clarify my statement solely to Ford or their cluster to make my overall point.
@CycoWarriorx
@CycoWarriorx 4 жыл бұрын
Jack njones That’s my point (in a much deeper way). They let the bean counters dictate auto performance and design, from materials to features. I remember when Ford in redesigning the Thunderbird, purchased a BMW 6 series (mid to late 80’s) and disassembled it to see how they did it. After the redesign, the bean counters killed the build and the T-Bird ended up being horrible in materials, features and functionality. They’ve gotten sooooooo much better in design and some materials - which makes instances like this just stand out. Given the speed of social media, this is the type of bad press they could do without.

@@whydoihave6neutrals772 i dont need to ask what you did to your mountaineer. if you want to prove your point just say what makes your car faster. since you're obviously a doctor and all, who studied for two years in human physiology. enlighten the rest of us how this has anything to do with Mental Illness and human psychology. what I drive depends on where im going or what im doing. for work or around town, i take my Ranger. If im going to a race or desert, I tow my race truck with my F150. If im running around with the wife and kid, i take my Explorer ST. what do you drive? besides your rocket powered Mountaineer?

@@whydoihave6neutrals772 i am confident in the new explorer. confident that your 4.0 v6 (200HP) or 4.6L(240HP) which ever one you have coupled with a 5spd, simply cannot outrun a 400hp modern vehicle with 10 gears to run through and all 4 tires to put power to the ground. however if you supercharged or added nitrous, which i highly doubt you did, it might come close, but unlikely. thats why i said, YOU WISH. multiple car reviewers have reported 0-60 times between 4.8s and 5.8s for the new explorer, the Civic Type R is rated at 5.2. now if you want to prove how bad ass your mountaineer is, post up some dyno numbers or video of your claim.

Strange design change...The Way how the front is bigger and the whole vehicle goes smaller towards back, the no longer smooth interior and pad screen sticking up so much, fake exhaust tips and sound...Older Explorer felt more substantial, Rear wheel biased however is amazing change

The mustang weighed less, but you have to wind out that coyote 5.0 to get to the power. Coyote 5.0 are flat down low, even with good gearing. I have a 2016 GT, love the car, but even with 3.55 gears it take it moment to really get going. Once I put the Ford Racing super charger on it, then it has low end. I just got a 2021 Explorer ST, it's my daily driver, and the low end comes on quickly!

Such a good looking truck on the outside but I think its a literal CRIME to pay MSRP for this. I know everybody and their mother is gonna say Telluride or Palisade but when they're $20K cheaper, do everything you need it to do and youre still not gonna get it. You kinda have to ask yourself, "am I retarded, or am I retarded?" (Again, ONLY if paying MSRP for these)

What trd pro did you get? 4Runner?
@zzanatos2001
@zzanatos2001 4 жыл бұрын
The TRD Pro is better off road, but it's not a performance vehicle by any stretch. No V8, no turbo, and only 270 horsepower compared to the Ford's 400 horses. (I have a 2004 4Runner Sport with a 4.7-liter V8, and it's awesome. But the new 4Runner has not improved on the 15-year-old version. In fact - unless Toyota improves street performance, I won't be getting another one.)
