Thanks for sharing. I wonder is there a lot of machine learning role in ads ranking and personalization in software companies? I am currently a CS PhD in data mining , information retrieval and NLP. I have been looking at industry opportunities now and not sure if there is a lot of jobs in my field. Maybe there are a lot of ads ranking role in social media companies ? Maybe should I just learn front end development and switch to SWE after PhD?

Yes, there are. We have many PhDs in machine learning who are working here. Not just ad ranking but ad integrity as well. I’d be happy to refer you.

@@shirleylane1057 Thanks so much. I am currently not graduated yet. I am still trying to publish paper and really hope to get a machine learning job in ads ranking/integrity/personalization space after graduation. I will definitely reach out after I defend my thesis. Can I just follow up with one more question. Are there a lot more front end/back end SWE jobs than machine learning jobs (in ads space); and for someone with a CS PHD, do you recommend going to back end/back end dev instead of machine learning? Sorry for the generic question. Because I have no idea about supply & demand side of both jobs in the markets, I am just trying to see which role I can have better chance succeeding. My PHD program is in a public University in the mid west and it is not prestigious at all. Thanks so much.

Yes, please do reach out when you complete your thesis! Good luck with it! I think front/back end swe jobs are more common and always needed, but if you have ML specialization and once you gain that industry experience, your specialization will make you stand out amongst other software engineers. It’ll be a long process of lots of applications, so you can try applying for both and seeing where it lands you. Wishing you best of luck and do reach out again when you’re ready :)

What are your thoughts on the work-life balance in Bytedance? Ps: love your videos!! 😁
@shirleylane10573 жыл бұрын
Thank you! There is a lot of collaboration with teams in China and Singapore (atleast for my team), so I generally have a more shifted schedule where I work more in the evenings. This will hopefully change as bytedance hires more people in the US 🤞

@@shirleylane1057 How many hours do you work a week? And can you share your day-to-day schedule? How do you manage evening meetings? I've received an offer from ByteDance and I'm debating whether i should take it. Any comments would be helpful!

Thank you for sharing your experience! Your videos are awesome. Question, are you fully remote? If so, are there opportunities to meet up with team members in person?

How long was the interview process? From your first interview until offer?

Somewhere around 3-4 weeks? If you have competing offers the recruiter can move pretty fast

Thank you for the insights! I am really praying to get the JO from ByteDance soon! 🙏🏻 Regarding what you said with Lark- that's pretty exciting I am currently experiencing it myself as one of their candidates because interviews are being conducted through Lark. And so far, I find Lark amazing and promising! I am curious tho, how many privacy do you have with the computer they have provided to you? Is it being strictly monitored to the point that you can't even confidently view your bill dues or statement of accounts in your personal emails? I find it hassle to switch through 2 computers every now and then. I hope you'll notice this query. More power to you, Shirley! :)
