same. when i was in a big corporation with so many red tapes, i thought "how nice if i can work at a company that will not have these many sops and restrictions". then i did make the move and i realise how difficult to get everyone on board because everyone works in their own way that it's so fragmented and too many hours were spent correcting mistskes than actually doing the work.

I also joined a big organization back in August 2021 (days later I turned 30) and thought 'this is it, 30 and new career, isn't it cool?!'. I only lasted for 2 months, mostly because I was unable to communicate with my immediate superior. Working there had given me several breakdowns and also depression. I think WFH had also partially affected my way of working as I just couldn't adapt to it especially joining a new company during this pandemic. If I were still in my 20s, I think I would've stayed but right now, mental health is everything to me.

Hi Jamie, thanks so much for sharing this. I started my new job (new role & industry) in Jan. Didn’t feel right from the start as I didn’t like the work environment & it just felt wrong. But just like most ppl here, I’m afraid of how a short stint will affect my CV, reputation, etc until I reached a point of depression, anxiety & super sad for 1+mth. I held on to my resignation, gave it a try, & I finally tendered my resignation in my 3rd month. I realised that mental health is EXTREMELY important. We can be replaced at work (& vice versa), but we are irreplaceable to our loved ones. Thanks for sharing this experience! Must be so relevant to millenials out there :) I also learned to trust my gut on this, they know if something is right/not, no matter how hard I try to rationalise.

The tip about probation periods being for both you and the company needs to be heard more by more people! Jamie, love your frank comments and I hope more folks share why they quit or stay in their firms! To paraphrase what you said, maybe 4 months is kinda short before you quit. Tik Tok and Google are at different phases in their life cycle. The latter can be considered a global, established MNC along the lines of firms like Oracle, IBM, etc. Tik Tok, on the other hand, is a global Chinese startup trying to morph into a global player and growing pains will include disjointed processes, lack of clarity, etc. However, what I'm glad you did not encounter which in many circles is the number 1 reason why people quit is their immediate supervisor. As a recruiter, I've heard too many stories of supervisors who bully and disrespect their staff, have weird ways of working or totally disorganized, etc. Seems that from your relationships with people in TikTok/Bytedance, people are thriving to a common goal but there are frustrations along the way before and (hopefully), they can push through!

I really appreciate you. I hated the buzz function most and the worst thing was that they keep unnecessary secrets and there is always a curtain on policy. No credits are given for hard work and although they call themselves to be a flat hierarchy organization it's just a bluff... they drain you out..... saying always day 1.... It's always a draining day in Bytedance ... being a part of Bytedance I was always stressed. They also do lot of unethical things.

My main reasons was culture and processes. It was tough on the culture change for me and it was draining me from my 2nd month. I left that job without a new job. But thankfully, after more scrutiny of the kind of job I wanted, I’m now in a better place. So you’re absolutely right about asking more questions in the interview. It really helps. Yes, don’t burn bridges!

Thanks for this video! This resonated alot with me, having left a job within months too. It was mainly the job scope which was not the right fit for me, but I acknowledge that it might have been more bearable if not for other reasons (culture) and I might have been able to tahan longer lol. Hi Jamie, I just started a new role last week. Last year, I quit my job in 2-3 months after too much unhappiness. My case was diff from urs - I kind of like the culture but not the bosses way of doing things. Simply put, it was on the edge of being toxic. Took me alot of hesitation as well cos it was my first job and I had a challenging job hunting process in this pandemic All the best to you!

The major point in here is `Culture` I would say the `Culture` between Chinese and West still quite different. As a Software Engineer who have stayed at both side in my past 9 years. I would say Chinese culture is more close to `finish the task` and `it's just a job, not your life`. You have to manage the mindset when you working in a Chinese style company. You are there to resolve the problem and make the company moving forward but not for making friend or family. It's more like Netflix, they said `we are not family`. They offer you higher salary and you solve the problem for them, that's it. No family, no friend there. It's still fine, right? If you have your ability to finish tasks earlier, you do have time to do what you want besides the job. You could have your own family life, friend after work. For people who can use to work in a Chinese company must able to separate their life and work. Life is the time after work, is the time with your family but not within office. And for Westen style. It's totally different. People are keen to make their friends in office, treat work as part of their life. Love to work in office but not work from home. When I was in another company in Westen word, my colleague even said, he felt sick because of working from home, he can't meet colleague so he doesn't know how to work (Which make me feel quite strange, how does your colleague showing physical effect the way you coding, but fine, I know that's his working and life style, respect). When working in Westen company, you have to treat work as part of your life and try to build your `family` in office as well. So people don't need to separate their life and work, the thought the work is part of their life. Both styles are okay and with their own drawbacks, it's just depends on which way is the best for you.

Yes, i hate Lark/feishu too and is definitely more an email person. The culture is miles different especially for your case being in google for so many years. In the end, I am now happy to be back at a US western culture company

@@jiahongsong458 slack doesnt really feel like a complete solution imo. contrary to jamie and alex, i actually think lark is really amazing. if you love slack, you'll love lark even more because lark is like the best of every world. lark is like slack + teams + telegram bots + workspace packaged in a really nice modern UI, very well integrated and has many features that really just make sense

@@nrjknqda yeah no doubt lark is a very powerful solution with tons of fearures. Slack interface feels more like discord. I will say the hate is more towards the usage of it. For eg, searching is difficult when people are sending you information everywhere rather than email. The industry standard for video meeting is still teams or google meet. So it tends to be confusing when you are going to use multiple tools in the end

Thanks for sharing. I quit my job after a few mths too. The company that I worked for is not MNC or SME. It's what ppl call it "iron rice bowl" job. Sarcasm & cold treatment from higher management. Collg that left told me that the turnover rate is super high. I started crying to myself after 1st mth of work cos the workload was too much & no support or direction from my AD. I qns myself if it's my prob. I have over 10yrs of working exp & this is my 1st time experiencing such thing. Even thou some of my frens told me to reconsider as it won't look gd on my resume. But I figured my mental health is more impt hence I decided to quit.
