Honestly we'd make the perfect Pokemon region. There's marshes, forests, multiple types of lakes (caldera, that one salt one that people say is great, floodplain, river basin, manmade, tons of hot springs), swamps, deserts (the normal kind where it's just clay soil with few nutrients everywhere, the mesa kind, and the sand dune kind), snowy alpine regions, salt flats, old lava tubes (ones you can hike in and ones that are underwater), an abundance of fossil beds, the ruins of an ancient civilization that main stream archeology doesn't know for sure what happened to them (local tribes have oral history, they know what happened, it's just not technically verifiable), and a few cults to make up the enemy group. The only thing we're missing is ocean but like fuck that basic shit, it's the most common geographical feature on the planet. If you really have to you can retcon an ocean biome onto the GSL since it's in the top ten for saltiest body of water on the planet. Miss out on the chance for the unique sea monkey based pokemon and the spiders that prey on them and the seagulls that prey on *them*, but I don't think Japanese people can comprehend not being near an ocean so any Pokemon game would have to include one.

I went on vacation to Utah 3 years ago. We were staying in an area with natural salt flats and they sold that salt in every store you went to. I noticed that there was a lot of Asian tourists at the parks that would just show up, take pictures and drive off. I thought nothing of it until later that day I went to buy a shirt at a souvenir shop and these two Asian women were in front of me were buying at least 20 containers of salt. I thought it was bizarre, so I asked a tour guide about it the next day. She said that Japanese food has a lot of salt in it, but Japan doesn’t have much natural salt and most of the salt there is imported and expensive. So Japanese people will go on vacation to Utah, buy tons of salt and go home.

The "hot beverages" rule is super old and is actually unclear. A lot of people apply it as they want with stuff like coffee and soda, but everyone agrees that it's for sure about alcohol. Polygamy is actually not a mormon thing at all. A small sect split off when the LDS church stopped practicing polygamy. That sect is the FLDS and the LDS church wants nothing to do with them. And one question I get all the time, despite not being mormon, is if they have horns or not. That was a lie perpetuated by the Mississippi government so that people could hunt mormons legally since they were a horned animal.
@spaceseed834 жыл бұрын
Also I completely forgot to say: some of the local missionaries are here to run visitor sites like temple square and come from out of state/country, and a lot of the ones that are utah natives stay in the state for medical reasons. A friend of mine has epilepsy and needed to stay close to home and family, but still wanted to go on a mission, so he was sent a couple valleys north of home (about 3 hours)

@alyssahansen14004 жыл бұрын
Do you have a source on the horned thing? I was under the impression that it was because horns are symbolic of evil (associated with demons). I mean, this myth has been applied to other religious minorities (Jewish people), so I would be surprised if it had a reason specific to Mormonism rather than just being the kind of thing people spread to dehumanize minorities.

She told me that the ones in Utah here actually have a far higher rate of conversions than anywhere else. I suppose it's true that those of us living here know that the members of the church are generally just people like the rest of us, so there isn't the strong negative association that those who only know about the church from stand up comedians have.

don't forget about the fact that: Seminary is a full year class in high school that kids take here, except it gives you no credit towards graduation. It's basically set up as an extra class, so that the kids who take it will still graduate on time instead of missing 4 credits. However, if you aren't LDS, and you use that class period to take credited classes instead, you can graduate early pretty easily. Not taking seminary automatically puts you ahead in credits. At least where I grew up.

As someone who is lds here is my take. The whole hot beverage thing isn't true. It's really about the caffeine. To my knowledge, it's the idea that caffeine can become an addiction, if you need caffeine to function that can be a problem. So coffee is a no. Soda is a grey area. Not all soda has caffeine but some does. The idea of addiction also applies, if you need Dr.Pepper or Mountain Dew etc etc.. to function then you shouldn't drink it.
@juliannesmith43484 жыл бұрын
lol yeah exactly that's how I try to explain it but it's so confusing to other people. It's odd that people think that needing something to function is healthy but like... it's cultural i guess?
@kindafreexp14154 жыл бұрын
This is basically my philosophy on the matter. The point is avoiding addiction, so if you want to fully apply it all then caffeinated soda would be banned as well. But my stance is that having a cup of coffee or tea is not going to be a strike on your permanent record. There isn't anything inherently wrong with coffee/tea, save for the possibility for addiction. All-in-all, anything that can lead to addictive behavior should be carefully monitored, and if you are having a difficult time with something in particular, then one should consider avoiding it as best they can.

Active LDS member here. I thought this video was awesome lol. In case you were actually wondering about 3 things addressed in the video, the only “hot drinks” people drank when the word of wisdom was put in place was coffee and tea, so in modern times it has been clarified to include coffee and tea in any form, however some members have become looser with this rule (caffeine from energy drinks, coffee or tea extracts, etc.) I don’t agree with taking it less seriously, but what am I gonna do 🤷♂️. Missionaries are sent to Utah because believe it or not, there are somehow people who still don’t know about our church, but there’s also people who are ready to learn that need that first contact, as well as teaching to the actual members of the church. Polygamy used to be a church supported practice 150 years ago. But definitely not anymore. If you actually saw church members doing polygamy stuff, something is very wrong. Also the “hello hello” song is SO spot on.

I'm not a fully fledged Mormon but I was raised one so I'll answer some questions: *Why Don't Mormons Drink Coffee or Tea?* "In general many Mormons don't drink coffee or tea because they don't like a lot of caffeine, but every person is different and the majority of the time Mormons don't drink these beverages to show their loyalty to God. Like a promise to God that they will keep these promises as they would with the Ten Commandments kinda. However, I personally drink Tea because I don't believe that God would punish me for drinking a beverage." *What Is Up With Polygamy?* "Tbh I have no damn idea either, it's weird and unsettling to me. Most Mormons believe that they should marry 1 person, because they believe that after marriage they will be together even after death. Of course I don't believe they would be together after death if it were a toxic relationship. It's weird but I guess Polygamy is a choice for some people? I truly don't know. " *Why do Missionaries Stop at People's Doors?* "I personally don't enjoy missionary work, but the reason why the Mormons do 'Missions' is because they believe it is their duty to bring back the 12 Tribes of Israel. (Everyone in the world is the 12 Tribes of Israel) They work very hard to give knowledge to people across the globe of their religion." *Why Do They Prefer To Be Called The Latter Day Saints (LDS)?* "They believe that their name / religion should have the Lord, Jesus Christ's name in their title, to show that they are loyal to him and God only, not the Prophet Mormon." *If You Have Any More Questions Feel Free To Comment I Really Don't Care*
@kindafreexp14154 жыл бұрын
This pretty much sums up my beliefs on the matters. From what I've gathered, people in the Church preach about a "loving, kind, forgiving, and just Heavenly Father" but act as if God is going to punish them for being anything less than puritanical. If you look at Christ's teachings and example, you can see the guidelines for a life of love, compassion, and forgiveness. Anything "strict" or "hardline" is simply not compatible with the image of a loving Heavenly Father or a compassionate Christ and comes either from a misunderstanding of the gospel, borrowed tradition from 1800's Protestantism, or "Mormon culturalism".
@ssk.86194 жыл бұрын
@@kindafreexp1415 Yes, I agree. I believe that he loves us as who we are, our choices, etc. If anything, I believe the only thing that he would look from us is that what we say and do should be kind, and generous. Just overall good people. I don't understand why he would bless us with things such as tea and coffee, but then judge us for drinking the beverages. It doesn't makes sense to me that a Loving Father would look down (and or) send his children to hell for such a small thing such as drinking caffeine.

@@ssk.8619 yeah, I honestly think that as a church, we (I'm a member) have blurred the lines between cultural customs that aren't always healthy, and doctrine. Doctrine is what God is like and what we believe. Especially in Utah, the "customs" we have are pretty toxic. People still believe that a woman's role is being a stay at home mom and if you aren't going to college to marry someone, then what is the point. My best advice is just to try to differentiate between culture and doctrine. I can respond if people have questions too. It's a pretty unfamiliar area for most people and there are a lot of crazy rumors, so I get that there are a lot of questions. I have had MANY myself

Hey, I’ll clear up the polygamy stuff. Basically, I believe the history was that for one reason or another polygamy came into practice during the early days of the church mainly during the times where they were being hunted down and run out of state after state. However, it was discontinued after a bit and the ones who didn’t like that decision broke off into their own group. Polygamy isn’t a thing that’s a part of the Church nowadays.

@@alyssanielsen8521 I think this is critical. Even far removed from Utah (South/East Coast) the line between culture and doctrine is pretty heavily blurred. Finding the point where religion ends and culture begins is vital, and for that reason I say rely on the scriptures, with all other things being supplementary. If something conflicts with Christ's doctrine of love, tolerance, and non-judgement then discard it. This is something I would advise all Christians to do, regardless of sect. Don't let culture and tradition override the Bible and Christ's teachings.

Ok the hot beverage/caffine thing has always confused me, even as someone who's grown up Mormon. Caffine isn't allowed so logically herbal tea is ok, but then hot drinks aren't ok so no herbal tea??? My family just disregards that rule, but take it from someone who grew up Mormon: SOMETIMES WE DON'T GET OUR OWN RULES EITHER

You can drink tea, coffee, and soda but as long it doesn’t become a addiction where you need it to function in every day life.
@kessclow93914 жыл бұрын
I think its just the sheer amount of caffeine, like expresso, coffee and energy drinks are banded but most soda is ok
@kindafreexp14154 жыл бұрын
@@danielortega6567 This is my philosophy on the matter. Things with the potential for addiction you should be careful about/wary of, but it is not a sin to have a cup of coffee. Unless you are having it because "hehehe, I'm not supposed to do this", then you probably need to repent.

It's not even really a store, it's like a Starbucks, but with soda. So you can customize your own soda and add like syrups and fruit and shit. It's pretty amazing, most of them also sell cookies :)

My recommendation from a soda shop they mentioned in the video (Fiiz, yes that is spelled correctly. 2 'i's 1 'z') is "Sprite Zen." It's SOOOOOO good. Or if you don't want it super sweet, you can just get it as a flavored water, which is more mellow. Totally worth stopping by Fiiz if every you are passing through!

😁 Thank you for keeping this respectful not just to members of The Church, but towards Utahns in general. ❤️ I was suggested this video a little over a year and a half after you published it, hope things are going well! Great conversation to listen to (even though I can tell you two didn't quite know/understand some church things, like how no polygamist is part of The Church 😉), you two seem like fun people. 👍

It's really interesting to see the views of people of "Mormons" who arent apart of the religion. (And no, most people aren't offended when you call us Mormons. We used to call ourselves Mormons and it's the historical name for us. We recently were asked to call ourselves the full name of the church because non-members started thinking we worshipped Mormon, which is not true.) Polygamy is not apart if the original religion anymore. It was for certain reasons in the 1800's, but we are of the belief that you should only have one husband/wife. Of course you can remarry, though we are against divorce (unless the other person is super abusive or whatever). So polygamists now are branched off from the original religion. The "welcome/hello" song part makes me laugh so hard because I have that song engrained in my brain and it appears that they do too. I promise we arent that weird once you get to know us. I never really liked the welcome song in primary, and if I remember correctly we (we being our primary in my area) never really sang it to visitors, just new kids in the ward. Church isnt so long anymore. It's two hours compared to the three it was before (of course with Covid it's only one right now for safety reasons). From the outside, our religion sounds crazy just because of the past polygamy and how forward we appear with missionaries and welcoming people when they come but we are pretty down-to-earth people. And we definitely dont blindly follow the beliefs of our leaders (no, we are not a cult). We are often encouraged to question what we believe and to ask questions regarding our belief. If you have any questions regarding what the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is really about compared to what you've been told or led to believe, feel free to ask them under this comment. I'm just curious what people say about us if I'm being honest 😂.

I’m just wondering but why do Mormons usually have a lot of children? I know not all do but on average they usually have big families.
@Jumblehpumpkin4 жыл бұрын
@@Paw_illustration we are encouraged to have families, but we aren't necessarily encouraged to have a lot of kids. That's just something that has happened naturally over time I guess. It might have to do with when the Mormons moved west/ the pioneers. It's just kinda become apart of the stereotype/ the culture of Mormons at this point lol.

OMG BWAAAAHHHH FINALLY A FELLOW UTAHN THIS VIDEO WAS SO RELATABLE Also as a Mormon let me just clarify: (3 year late tho lmao) -the reason why we can't have coffee/tea/alcohol (or what my parents tell me) is just because it bad for you i guess, I've never heard anything about it being bad because it has caffeine or it being hot, so that was kinda surprising (we still can have herbal tea, too and soda :3) -I've never ever actually met any polygamists in the church before and what I leaned in my studies class was that it was something the church USED to do, but now we don't do it - 5:58 HELP IVE SEEN THIS PLACE BEFORE HELP BWBAABBWBWABABABABABAB

As someone who grew up in northern Utah for 15 years of my life this is so accurate. I never was Mormon, but the amount of church play dates I had and the constant pressure of going to church is real. I don’t live there anymore thankfully, but I really do miss the nature and the mountains and my friends.
