It matters in terms of representation and belonging. Unfortunately when you don’t see people that look like you in certain areas it makes people feel as though they don’t belong there. It can also be hard and un comfortable to navigate. Also having people from different backgrounds, race religions and genders in the industry generally brings about a better variety of thinking. So it is very important to be diverse.

How do you find mentors before applying for PM roles?
@pitolinmotion
@pitolinmotion 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, you just gotta reach out to ppl that you think would be a good mentor for you, and ask them. Best to be direct and also be clear with what you would like to get out of the experience and how also it can hopefully serve them too. Cos mentoring can take a lot of time, and if there’s no benefit for them, then why would they wonna do it 🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️

Thank you so much for this helpful video! I am interested in being a PM and after hearing about the cons I still find it intriguing. Though I will need to work on a lot (anxiety over stressful situations being high on the list😅), I have trouble taking space. I’m someone who tries to avoid conflict and confrontations. I end up just going along with everything and I can’t make a decision due to being afraid of angering someone. Which the con about how everything is your fault makes this even more difficult for me. That’s why I’d like to know any advice on this matter in advance so I am prepared on such circumstances. Love your smile and energy! Keep up the good work!!!❤️

Hey girly 🤍 thanks so much for the kind words… woo love that you’re still interested in becoming a project manager! I think it is a rewarding career. I would say that there isn’t just one way, or a correct way to lead. You have to do what’s best for you. You can be assertive but also take everyone’s opinions on board. I think it’s a skill to be able to understand the balance. In regards to avoiding conflict and confrontation, I would say it’s unavoidable in this role haha, as everyone has their own objective. But I think the key really is relationship building and being able to come to a decision that will be best for everyone long term. You may make the right choice, you may make the wrong one, such is life, you will live and learn going forward. And you can’t please everyone at the end of the day. Concentrate on building up your confidence and critical thinking skills, that way you will be able to stand clear in your decisions. At the end of the day, we ain’t paid to get it always right. We are paid to get everyone together to come up with the a solution that will benefit the project x hope this helps ✨

From my view point "Being a project manager is like being the captain of a ship, guiding a team to reach a destination. It's exciting but also challenging. A usual day involves organizing tasks, leading meetings, and solving problems. It requires being organized, flexible, and good at bringing people together. Even though it can be tough, seeing a project succeed makes it rewarding!"

I definitely struggle with the general anxiety that you mentioned. How do you manage it when it comes? Also, when things don’t go well with the project, how do you handle it? I feel like since it’s always considered your fault as PM, that can be stressful!
@pitolinmotion
@pitolinmotion 2 жыл бұрын
Hey girl. Anxiety! It really sucks, especially cos I struggle with it quite bad, and not just in a working environment. Truth is it’s something I think imma be working on my whole life. I try to manage it by controlling as much as I can (btw I don’t think this is necessarily the best way to deal with it 😅). But when I know stuff, understand what’s going on in detail, even when it doesn’t concern me, it makes me feel at ease, as it allows me to plan for things going wrong before they happen. When things go wrong that are not my fault lol, I’ve learned to understand that, it’s not my fault, it is what it is. Although I control as much as I can, ultimately I can’t control what I can’t. My boss always tells me I’m too scared to give bad news, but I shouldn’t be. I’ve don’t all I can, and this is what it is. Gotta just be used to just saying that, whilst trying to come up with a solution at the same time. I’m just such a fixer and I hate to disappoint, but a big part of project management is also simply reporting. It helps to take the stress off you believe me !

Came across your video by chance & I concur with what you've mentioned. Looks like you're working as a PM in a Tech Company. Words of advice for those intend to become a PM. Be willing to learn & sacrifice 4 to 5 years (forget about Work Life Balance) to learn & become an independent PM. Thereafter, it's still a on-going learning process as business requirements changes. As a PM, you don't own anything, but you're reponsible for everything. PM literally cleaning up messes caused by someone else so that things can get moving. Be flexible, workaround, & be willing to go beyond your job role (ie roll up your sleeve & work with the ground people to get things done). Learn to priortize your works as everything is urgent. Be able to stay cool & work under pressure. If you think you're going to burst, step back for a while & back again after you've cool down & with a calm mind to resolve the issues/arguments. This is a teamwork & not for Solo Player(online mobile games :p). Just my 2cents worth of advice.

Thank you for the insightful video. I am a Project Manager (with PMP & PSM1 certification) and been in project management for around 7 years in Canada. Been thinking about what's next and stumbled upon product management. There seems to be a shift happen from the project mindset (deliverable mindset) to product mindset (outcomes mindset). I have noticed people move from project/program management to product management but not the other way around (especially in tech industry). Would love to get your thoughts on project/program vs product management & maybe potentially pivoting into product.
@pitolinmotion

Hey hey thanks for watching 🤗 if I’m honestly I won’t be able to do a video on this because I have no experience in product management or anything along those lines. I’m bit an expert, just making videos based on my experiences haha. That being said interesting you should bring this up, because I’ve actually been looking for my next step and I have said I want to expand into product management instead of programme management. Personally I did a programme management qualification and it was so boring for me, too much governance. I can just imagine it’s going to be too much corporate governance involved
@pitolinmotion
@pitolinmotion 2 жыл бұрын
I prefer to be right in the action and that’s why I’m opting for product management, it’s more technical and valuable in my opinion, and it will make project delivery more meaningful as you have an in-depth knowledge of both the requirement side and the deliverables side of things

This is extremely helpful I work in property management and I am looking for a change! I think this sounds fun it’s a bunch of high intensity in property management, a lot of change and being able to pivot in crucial moments is key and I think am able to transfer a lot of skills to this role.

Thank you so much for putting this together. This is the first video I’ve watched on your channel but I will definitely be watching some more. You mentioned about some introverted people being good at PM… are you able to elaborate on why they were still good? What skills did they have that made them stand out? I am still on the fence as to whether this is the right direction for me. I’m from a high tech sales background but identify myself more as an introvert. If you could explain what introverted PM’s have done differently to still be good at their job, that would be super helpful!
@pitolinmotion
@pitolinmotion Жыл бұрын
Hey thanks ! If you can do sales. You can defo go project management, it’s just about leading people and interacting, and relationship building. Introverts can do this. It Jusu depends on your personal style. Nothing they do differently : but I think both introverts and extroverts can be good leaders

Loving the black women in tech!! women in general, but yes black women lets get it!!!!!!! i'm 30 years old looking to break into tech. Wish I did this a long time ago because i'm so tech savvy. Project management, or Data analysis are my options but think i'm leaning more towards PM. I just don't want to feel like i'm too old now lol. Having a old soul will do that for you, making you feel 10 times older than what you really are. But I am excited to start this journey. I also just started my online retail business so this field will definitely even help me with my own business. But the tech field is where its at

Hello girl! And welcome to the gang! They need more of us in this field so I’m really happy that you are considering it. Only soul?? Nah believe me, there are enough old men in the field that already being that vibe. You’re going to bring vibrancy and elegance to your team. Something a lot of teams are lacking. It’s never to late to get started, especially if you can leverage your previous experience to get into this field . I got a video coming out on New Year’s Day which which help with your decision too. Hiya hun! The best way to get started is to literally just apply! Lots of people are scared to apply because they are scared of rejection. But you’ll never get feedback on where you lack unless you apply. Pm is hard to break into if you have no experience ( I won’t lie) but it’s bot impossible. I’ve seen lots of people do it .
