Hey Luara! I just wanted to take the time to thank you for these videos about working for Disney Animation. I'm a struggling artist and your videos inspire me to keep trying....I've had such a disappointing and frustrating journey since graduating from art school, studying animation & illustration. It doesn't help that I have chronic depression which makes it even harder to find hope. But your videos are so positive and encouraging & it makes me think that I might have a chance someday (though it doesn't seem likely) a little bit of hope is better than none.

Thank you for the tips!! I do have some questions! So for the deadline, I work as a waitress and I never have a steady schedule to be able to do things, when I do commissions it’s pretty stressful to get them out in time when I have a deadline (if they say there is one ). Do you have any tips that can help with that? Because sometimes I stay up till 4 am to just work on it and I know that’s not good for anyone. Another question, Does a person have to go to college for animation job?I plan on going to college regardless since I personally wanna go to give myself a better chance. But I also found that if you have a lot of connections or are pretty huge online can also help you out wether you went to college for art/animation. I just wanna know which would you benefit more from. I’m slowly getting connections with other artists or other people who’d recommend me to people hiring which helps me out. Third question, how do you get animation studios to more likely notice your work then others? I sometimes feel like I’m missing things in my own art work and I wanna practice more and more to fix it to make it better. I see these people getting jobs with animators or animation studios and I just wanna know if you have any tips to be noticed a bit more by them. And I can’t remember if you explained this and if you did I’ll watch the video if you made one, but which type of animation program do studios use?

hey laura! im obsessed with your video's ! being a student in animation school, your video's help a ton! i'm so excited to see your '"day in a life" video, it really helps to get an idea of how things are in the professional industry. i was just wondering... in school we are pushed to the limits to live and breath animation, and i'm talking 7 days a week nonstop. i just wanted to know, if thats the 'reality' in the real world. in animation school, (traditional 4 year degree program) we are being trained to do things the traditional, hard way... now that technology is making jobs easier, i was just curious if studio's really do take advantage of that fact, an example can be character turn arounds, we are expected to perfect the character turn arounds in a traditional way on paper before we do it digitally. but when i asked a professional character designer from dreamworks, he told me that in 'the real world' they use toonboom to do that, because it's faster and like you said, there are deadlines that need to be made. i know being students we have to learn everything from scratch, but is it really true that studio's use shortcuts ? if so, i'd love to know so i myself can get a head start with using professional softwares on top of my existing drawing skills
@lulusketches
@lulusketches 6 жыл бұрын
hi! thanks for watching, glad my videos are helpful! on a television show everything's about speed, so no one does turnarounds traditionally. our character designers do them on photoshop so you can copy/paste parts that are identical from different angles, and paste the front of the design so you have a silhouette to work from when you draw the back of the design. artists in tv rarely do anything traditionally unless they are older (age-wise). some of our crew from earlier generations, such as a couple layout artists, didn't learn photoshop until the last few years so they like to start on paper and then clean their linework on photoshop. I've personally never used toonboom, but our show is animated in toonboom Harmony, if you're interested in actually animating rather than designing at a studio. the designs and everything we send to animation are done in photoshop (or if you're a storyboarder, storyboard pro). so doing traditional animation is great for learning, but it's more something you'll do in school and less in a professional setting :) but some studios might be different!

What do they look at, when hiring? {School wise} What will happen if you're ill? What things would get you fired automatically/over time?
@lulusketches
@lulusketches 6 жыл бұрын
ThatKawaii FrenchFryWithFerrets When hiring they’ll look at your portfolio and experience. School doesn’t matter, can help with networking sometimes though. I didn’t go to art school myself. You get sick days that you can use over a year, you also earn vacation days. Things that could get you let go: if they decide your style isn’t fitting the show, if you’re working too slowly and missing deadlines, or if you’re not listening to notes.

I just have a question: did you have experience working in smaller studios, or freelance, before you got your current position? I know you got this position when a recruiter saw your work online, so since you didn’t technically apply, I’m curious. I seem to be in the “not enough experience loop” where I don’t have enough experience for a studio, but I can’t get the experience without getting hired in the first place.

I got my first job working as an artist at Nickelodeon, so I was working at Nick when I got the offer from Disney. It's a catch 22 with jobs requiring experience. Luckily Nick hired me based on my portfolio even though I didn't yet have experience. I think it helps if you do an internship at a studio, or work at a smaller studio or freelance first. Many of my friends started at smaller non-union studios to get their start!
