Today we'll discuss what its like to work as a consultant. I worked at the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) as a consultant for 4 years. I'll share my insight of working as a consultant in that environment
There are a large variety of consultant jobs and firms ranging from the "elite" management consulting firms like BCG, McKinsey and Bain, to operations consultants to more specialized consulting.
Whether you'd like to work as a consultant or just interested in what consultant work is like, this video could be interesting to you.

Hey Richy great video do you think post the pandemic is there gonna be any change in terms of travelling of MBB Consultants
@RichGilbert
@RichGilbert Жыл бұрын
It seems there is a growing push to "return to normal" - managers are wanting employees in the office, and likely in many industries, people will start to travel more and more until we're kinda back to where we were years ago... just my opinion

Hi thank you for your video! Would you advise to stop consulting before having children? (as a women working in consulting)

Depends on your tolerance for the challenge and how much time you want to spend with your kids. I've seen people do it. And the big, good firms make all kinds of accommodations for mothers. However, many leave consulting at that stage because it's pretty difficult with the travel schedule, long hours, etc.

Curious what the motivation is to take on this lifestyle. It can’t be salary. At like $220k starting, at top firms working 80 hours a week, that’s like any low to mid-level professional making $110k a year. Why not just work 2 jobs? For many in tech, this is possible. Do consultants do this to advance their careers? Is it really more lucrative than just climbing the corporate ladder in other highly-paid sectors like sales? I compare this to capital medical equipment sales where you work half the hours for the same pay, and I just don’t get the draw.

Hi Jessica - thanks for the comment! You're very right. The initial per-hour pay is not great - especially when you're at that point in your career. The draws are 1. The learning opportunities as you're working directly with top management, 2. The exit opportunities as consulting opens up many great job opportunities after you leave. 3. Compensation goes up very quickly in consulting. It's "up or out" but if you keep going up, you're rewarded handsomely. And 4. Consulting stays with you through your career. People often look for "ex-consultants" for many types of jobs.

80 hours is standard?

It depends on the firm and the case you're working on. I've seen some comparisons that say McK is 76 average, BCG is 62 and Bain is 56, but who knows. If you're on a 2 week quick due diligence that has to be finished, then you will be really working for those two weeks. Sometimes you have a break in the craziness and can take it a bit easy. But generally I'd say at BCG it was closer to 60-65 hours average per week in my experience.

Not so great but if there’s a presentation needed the next day then that’s what you have to do.
