The UK food is heavy for a reason. It’s mostly to serve the working class who need the calories and get straight to work that and the weather is so unpredictable that it is below freezing one minute then the next it’s boiling then rain then snow then who knows what. The food has to sit on the stomach to warm people long enough. Afternoon tea is a tradition dating from medieval times as it was just a break to get something to eat that gets some energy into you so you last the rest of the day before dinner but the concept has evolved to the fancy high tea or just some desserts and tea to last the day.
@RevStickleback
@RevStickleback 4 жыл бұрын
To be honest, very few people in the UK have tea in the afternoon any more. Beyond Cornish pasties, where the crust was designed to give miners something to hold on to, I don't think British food really evolved to serve any purpose. It was more about using what was available. For much of Britain, that meant potatoes. Rice is a big thing is East Asia for the same reason.
@yugioht42
@yugioht42 4 жыл бұрын
RevStickleback actually I’m right well mostly because if you ever been in England at all you know the weather is so unpredictable that people have to use like six layers of clothes just in one day. The food definitely is hearty if you notice it’s stewed and fried but in large portions enough to sit on the stomach to warm a person up. Because it’s hard to get anything from the land and sea it used to be rare for beef to appear hence the celebration of Sunday roast when it happened but with the advent of easier transport and better raising methods it’s become a standard Sunday meal after church or whatever. The afternoon tea did evolve just differently depending on where as some people still do it others don’t think about it as I did. I had to learn about cuisines of the world through working at my parents restaurant to which we added some international flair. I had to understand what I was doing and when.

andy luo I’m English, from up north and gotta say dude, most of that info is wrong lmaooo. Plus don’t see “Britain” as one whole thing. The north of England is completely different from the south of England, Scotland is not even comparable to England in some ways, same for Wales. We all have different accents, traditions, food, clothes, work life is all DIFFERENT. Some of the history was correct, but it’s not like that anymore, for example, afternoon tea isn’t a thing anymore unless you’re posh. And we don’t eat heavy foods so much anymore, more of a mix of foods from all around the world, and that being said, it all depends whereabouts you’re from in Britain.

The odd thing is that when Japan came out of isolation in the mid-1800s they decided to model themselves on the UK - being a similar small island laying off a large continent. They even adopted a similar system of aristocracy, and British engineering methods. But, re-famous people, have they never heard of the Queen?

I disagree, the Japanese have a much more closed and homogenous culture so it's no wonder they don't know as much. Most British people wiil know of basic stuff like famous Japanese people... even the least educated football fan will know of Shinji Kagawa for example, famous foods, sushi is one everyone knows, because we eat a lot of foreign food here commonly, unlike in Japan where you're less likely to find a British restaurant. Many people drive foreign imported Japanese cars. But generally Japanese culture is less internationally well known as British culture, e.g. most couldn't name a Japanese novel

CGP Grey has a video that did a pretty good job of explaining the difference between the UK, England, Great Britain, etc. People often use these terms interchangeably, but they’re not the same thing. England is just one sub-entity of the UK (the others being Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland) and Great Britain is actually a geographic term, referring to the largest landmass where England, Scotland, and Wales reside. Putting it in terms we might be more familiar with in America, basically think of the UK as the USA, England as a state, and Great Britain as the Contiguous 48. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qH_YaYt6d7ihZ5I

As a Brit living in Japan, England is just like any country. There are terrible and amazing things about it. I absolutely love visiting home and love England dearly, but all in all I prefer life in Japan and think if I moved home I would miss Japan too much. The stereotype of English food being bad is nonsense though. It may not be fancy, but a sunday roast, full English, cream tea, pies, fish and chips, trifle. We have not only traditional homemade pastry/cakes everywhere but we have foreign cuisines pretty much in any city as well so food is never an issue in England, its the best!

Did you know (tedious history moment...) Fish and Chips became popular in the mid 1800's as farm workers moved to Cities to work in factories. Often their accommodation was poor with no kitchen etc. First sold in the late 1840's as Jewish style fish and French style potatoes, not until the 1880's did this morph into Fizh n' Chips, the English dish. It did zo as it was an easy meal for seaside resorts. The new Industrial class were able to afford daytrips, and took their food tastes with them.

Every country has romantic notions about another country, only some of those notions come close to the reality. I mean, we're not *so* bad, but I feel many Japanese people would be underwhelmed by how everyday life is here. Same could probably be said if we were to travel there; Once you get past the novelty and tourism, there would be plenty of aspects of Japan that would likely be disappointing. Nowhere is perfect, after all.

2:50 Only Northern Ireland is part of the UK. Ireland declared independence in 1919 and after 2 more years of war a ceasefire was declared which resulted in the Anglo-Irish Treaty being signed in 1921. The terms of the treaty came into effect in 1922 which resulted in the southern part of Ireland becoming a self-governing dominion and was called the Irish Free State. In 1949 they became a republic and the country is now called the Republic of Ireland. In 1973 Northern Ireland were given a referendum on whether they would remain part of the UK or join the Republic of Ireland. 98.9% voted to remain part of the UK but the turnout was only 58.7% due to most nationalists boycotting the vote. However, even if all the non-voters were to vote for a united Ireland then the support for keeping in the union with the UK would still have been the majority with 57.5%.
