What Josh Gibson Baseball Card Is About To Explode In Price? And Why?

MLB recently announced negro league statistics would be added into MLB statistics. This immediately propelled Josh Gibson to the top of numerous records. After the news broke, it made me wonder, how would the baseball card hobby react? So I wanted to do a deep dive!

I believe this will boost the values of the entire '74 Laughlin Set. Perhaps not to the extent of the Josh Gibson card, but I do think the set will gain significant awareness and popularity. Great names like Spottswood Poles, Rap Dixon, Jelly Gardner and Bingo DeMoss should be much more appreciated and recognized by collectors.

I have seen a ton of people with negative views on this. Its refreshing to see it looked at in light that isn't filled with resentment. I for one applaud the move by MLB. Segregation is stain on MLBs history. Appreciate the video my friend.

I think like most things in the collect world big news equals an initial big jump then I comes back down to higher than it was before the news but much less than the first spike. This would be a good example of something to track over maybe a year to see since the announcement took most of the sports world by surprise. Nice data collection and info though

Thanks Drew! You could definitely be right. I think the 1500 pop count and scarce number of different cards you can buy for Gibson, makes this a little different then other examples. But I agree, let’s see where this is, in a year!

In most cases yes but demand trumps it and there is realistically probably less than 100 laughlins and shakeys still out there..... rocket ship imo

I find it hard to believe that MLB puts Gibson above anyone, especially considering they don't know his true numbers. In my opinion, this move was a joke by MLB, especially considering he never was in the league.

Sadaharu Oh has more home runs than Barry Bonds and Hank Aaron. I doubt MLB will ever count it. But who knows. It does stink though. Japanese and Korean players have to play 9 years in Japanese League before they are free agent, and can be elgible for the MLB.

It is great that Josh Gibson is finally get the credit he deserves. I think the card will spike with the news and then come back down a bit. I do think the days of grabbing it in the prices you stated are over! Ultimately think it land some where in the middle but either way it is taking off.

Good analysis Theo. The ‘74 Laughlin is a cool novelty card, but I think the true relics are the place to be. Imagine if Mickey Mantle only had one or two known game-used bats.. I think the Gibson Tier One Relics are going to go bonkers.

I do agree with that statement! I just feel, as you said, so rare, it’s not going to be unattainable for most collectors. But percentage alone, i agree the relics and toletaros is gonna be at the moon!

Only problem with relics is it just had to be from the game. Could have been the bay Boys for all we know. Relics feel super scammy to me

@@VivaLasVegasX Yea, I agree generally. With relics, provenance is key. Thankfully we know that Topps purchased a verified Josh Gibson gamer about 10 years ago, and this has been used to create the Tier One Relics since 2016.

Theo isnt the 1950 Toletero Josh Gibson Jr who played for the Grays from 49 to 52...THE Josh Gibson played til 46 and passed away in 1947?

I believe Josh Gibsons last season was 1946… and the toleteros was 50-51. So there isn’t a playing days card for him…. I would definitely say it’s his most important card regardless. Just extremely pricey.

Theo, great video! I looked for the 1974 Laughlin Gibson at the National last year, but did not end up finding one. I think it will be on fire for a while and then settle down. However, once the card settles down, it's new price level will probably be much higher than it was before. The ship has sailed! 😊👊

Prob sold for $3400!!! The sgc is at 1k with 5 days to go! The 74 laughlin is the card but the 76 shakeys is even more rare imo. Then the 1980 immortals and 1983 donruss hall of fame heros are still under $30. I think the laughlin and the shakeys will go sky high over time

I am searching for other Negro League players that are not quite as prominent as Josh Gibson…but certainly will now be in demand due to the recent MLB changes! Cool Papa Bell comes to mind…also, how will Jackie R and Satchel cards be affected by the rules change as they are now getting much more national attention? Just things to ponder…

I think Jackie Robinson and Satchel Paige are good long term buys. Both Robinson and Paige too, saw some of the greatest spikes during the pandemic.

I have been a negro leaguer collector for awhile. The Toleteros had already about at the t206 Wagner level. The 74 Laughlins will go up. Some 78s too. All his cards are going up. The modern numbered cards of him will go nuts too i think. I think his cards will go down a bit and have a new plateau.

Makes sense! I think the scarcity of the Laughlin’s and the scarcity of it, compared to the average Topps card, definitely makes it an interesting case study. Very cool that you collect the negro league players!

My theory is MLB naming, Josh Gibson, after all these years as the new career batting leader as a marketing, and a strategic business decision, as a way to try and reel in, a more *diverse fanbase. Also, the percentage of African American players on current rosters, is a smaller percentage too. What I find interesting if Gibson replacing Cobb will have a trickle down effect, and other records will change also. But as far as his card prices. I think there will be an increase. There are not many of his cards. A Josh Gibson biopic would be fun. I would like to see one for Satchel Paige too. There are discussions that Clemente's son wants one. I think that may still be undergoing negogiations. Hopefully that will happen.

Not a great comparison. Minor leagues are for guys that can't cut it in MLB. Negro leagues were for guys who weren't allowed to play in MLB.
