From what I understood is that it is Marie Antoinette’s syndrome, which causes hair to become grey/white because of stress, similar to aging, however in the video what he talks about is the symbolical meaning of the hair itself, instead of the medical reason for the greying of kaneki’s hair (it’s grey in the manga, not white, his imaginative rize said so), therefore while your argument is correct, so is the one shown in the video.

@@zsword93No, it was because of the stress and torture kaneki went through, while he was tortured his hair turned gray and his nails turned black/red, the reason for the hair was the stress of being tortured for so long, whereas his nails turned red/black because his fingers were cut off too many times, because of this his nails died, which made a pool of blood get stuck under his nails, which then dried up.

Eating other Ghouls to gain power and become a Kakuja can make you go insane depending on the rate at which you cannibalize, Arata (Touka and Ayato's dad) did this and became insane, but slowly he regained his sanity as he stopped, the same goes for Kaneki, he stopped acting crazy after slowing down and returning to normalcy, though in the end he still lost to Arima who made him go insane once more during and after their fight by stabbing him the eyes so technically the video is correct, he became Haise and returned to sanity at the cost of his memories!

People in comments are debating each other about if it's stress or what, but actually no one said the real reason what it's explained in the manga, though I think you are totally accurate in the symbolism that is behind. The reason his hair keep changing it's color, or better said, why does it gets gray time to time, it's because there was a component between the cells (at least in ghouls) that allow them to regenerate, but the overuse cause it to deteriorate, in other words, he just got older after healing again and again in a really short lapse of time, as it happened with the torture, also the color of his nails changed for the same reason. It was a similar thing what happens to Arima kind, only that for ghouls, it doesn't lead to death from ageing. I think Arima comment on the topic in their final battle, when he told Kaneki about himself. Still, they explain it in the last arch of the manga, when the ex girlfriend of Nishiki came back to the scene. It was also a theoric explanation since they didn't know where was the real limit of it, so even if they couldn't say at all if Kaneki would run to the edge eventually or if he would recover that ability on his cells replacing them in time, they at least warn him that he could lost the ability to regenerate so he should be careful. I hope this will be useful, as surprisingly no one was commenting this, even manga readers xD.

It's a bit of both, the anime catches some flack with how they presented Kaneki's hair change, but think of this more in terms of little Kaneki (if you haven't gotten to that part you'll understand when you do). Little Kaneki is a reflection of Kaneki at his core, if the white hair was due entirely to trauma, then it wouldn't make thematic sense for his core to have the white hair as Kaneki is more than just the trauma he has experienced. So it was due to partially the horrible experience he went through when captured, and his accepting of Rize as part of him

From what I've heard, hair changing colours is also a result of weird RC reaction bullshit. So even though yes, it has a story purpose, in terms of the lore, white hair is just an occasional trait of Ghouls. That's why several other Ghouls or Hybrids have white hair.

Hi avid manga reader Here. They explained in the manga that rc cells cannot contain melanin (the thing that makes shit dark on humans) so when kaneki allows himself to be a ghoul he gains more white hair. It turns back to black when he suppresses his RC cell rates (you can almost completly supress their reproduction based on mental state as shown by toru mutsuki) when he was tortured he needed to be a ghoul to survive so his hair turned white and his nails turned black (people say his nails turning black was caused by the cells regenerating so much in his fingers and toes from being cut off that they were completely ghoul and produced the unknown chemical that produces darkness instead of melanin in its olace but that's just a theory I believe) when he became haise he didnt know if he was human or ghoul, didn't use his kagune, and barely got injured. So he only produced a minimal amount of RC cells however his natural rates were already high as fuck so he got mixed. As black reaper kaneki he accepted that he was kaneki but completely surpressed his RC cells as much as he could cause he's a traumatized emo boy. Then his hair turned back white when he started going ape shit and kicking ass as a ghoul again

It's his ghoul cells. When his ghoul cell count is high his hair turns white. When it's black he's repressing the ghoul cells. That's why it's black when he first turns, because he doesn't accept himself as a ghoul at first, then white after he's tortured and accepts his new identity, Haise was a ghoul working with humans, so his cell count was high but not as high because he again wasn't fully accepting his role as a ghoul, back to black when Kaneki wakes up because he's mentally unstable and intentionally represses his cells for awhile so he can't heal as well. That's also why some other characters have white hair, because their ghoul cell count is that high.

In manga, hair are white(better say gray) because of continuous stress after torture. His hairs didn't change in moment, but for a long period of time. After he was released and started ±rehabilitating, + lost his memories, his mental state(if there's one left lol) wasn't stressing him, he started to accept everything around him and moved on. Physiologically, his hair color returns. But not for long. Everything after that isn't following rules of biology at all

The anime never covered it but in the manga the reason why kaneki went totally insane was because he ate ghouls Not only did he ate Rize and Jason but also other ghouls in order to become stronger, he refused to eat humans. And because of it the RC cells in his body started going out of control which causes him to go insane and develop a half kakuja Later in the manga he was very close into becoming a full kakuja but thankfully Hide stopped him from going completely insane
