I bloody loved making this video - thanks to Marikit & Makisig (and their dad Tony!) for helping us make this video. Seeing the happiness & confidence that playing an instrument brings to young people is probably the most gratifying thing about working in a music shop. It's so important that we all help kids get the best start to their musical journey, so if you're a parent or anyone else that kids might turn to for help with music, please please please support & encourage them! Enjoy the video & stay tuned because after we shot this video I let Marikit & Makisig lose in the store to pick whaetever they wanted & we had another jam in the studio!! Cheers, Lee

This was cool Lee. In the 60s, like around '66 or '67 I wanted an electric guitar BAD. The Sears & Roebuck catalog, as well as the Montgomery Wards catalog came in the mail and we started dreaming! I wanted a black "Silvertone" something-or-other from Sears but got an acoustic from Wards instead. I was a little let-down but I didn't want to hurt their feelings so I trudged on bravely. I didn't know anything about new strings like I do now, so it kept falling out of tune. I didn't know how to tune it, nor did I have much of an "ear" either. And THAT'S what kept me from playing and learning. They didn't have anything to tune it up with like they do now except a black plastic "pitch-pipe" and I just couldn't hear it, and knew ZERO about same-note/different-octave stuff. When we moved 2 years later I gave it to my next door neighbor Arthur. I sure wish I had that guitar now, Lee. I do have a few electric guitars now and a peddleboard with a polytune 3 as peddle #1 of course, but oh how I wish I still had it.

This video was rather emotional for me, to be honest. I started watching Anderton's videos back when Chappers used to rock the bandana. That was 15 years ago, when I was still a teenager. Now I've come to a stage in my life where one starts about having children and then I see this. It's almost like this channel has been on the same journey as I have, growing up alongside me.

My first ever electric guitar was bought after sitting down and trying stuff out. I was lucky that this was in the late 90s, and choices were pretty good. I ended up with a Vintage brand Pacifica style guitar which had really nice playability, and had a cool bare wood finish. As I developed I moved onto an Epiphone Les Paul, which didn't play quite as well, but I was enamoured with. Ultimately I was drawn to the Les Paul more, even though with hindsight the Vintage was superior as a player. The budget offerings now are unbelievable, it's a golden era for beginners.

Love this! And you it’s great to see Lee’s philosophy ingrained in the team. When we took our boy to by his first electric guitar, the guy was very much about "choose a guitar that you will want to pick up and play". That year the East Coast guitars were not very inspiring, but the boy walked away with a Squire Mustang. And then lockdown happened and I picked up that mustang and started learning to play too! And the boy plays a Jaguar Bass we bought at Andertons

Also props to mr drummer man for quickly picking up on what they did!

I teach beginners at a local shop- Capt. is right, you really want to avoid the stuff that simply will not perform. Parents come in thinking that they want to save money and be sensible until they find out if their kid is into this or not- but here's the thing, the quickest way to make sure your kid doesn't get into it is to buy them an instrument they're constantly fighting, that won't do the things they want to do. You don't want to go overboard and spend a bunch of money either- but it has to hold tune, it has to play well enough they're not constantly fighting it. And first and foremost- it has to be something that ignites passion in them- and that invariably has to do with how it looks- to them, not to you. It has to be something they look at and immediately want to pick up and play it- something they feel makes them look cool. But it also has to play the kind of music they like so- if your kid is a metal head, don't buy him a single coil Tele or Strat. If they're into blues or jazz don't buy them a shredder style super Strat with a Floyd on it. Buy the guitar, amp, etc. that plays the music they like. And just because you love amps and "moving air"- come on man, this isn't about you. 9 times out of 10 your kid is going to be happier with a modeler- it has all the fx in it so they can experiment and find what they like. It's far easier for them to move around and use, it's more intuitive for them because they've grown up with computers and all that, and if they play with others it will make things way easier. It opens up the world of looping to them, something I think you should introduce them too as soon as possible.

Exactly, I was trying to help a friend buy a drum set for there kid. I suggested going used and sent a few $400-$500 sets to choose from. They thought that was too much and went with a Rouge set for $120. There kid quit within 2 weeks with a drum set that was hard to play and sounded like garbage. Even if the kid didn’t end up playing with either set, with the other sets they could have resold and got some money back, now they just had to throw the new one in the garbage because no one wanted it.
@jlore634419 күн бұрын
So true. I was in a shop recently checkin out a guitar and saw a mom come in (without the kid) and while she did not want to listen to the sales person, they also did not try very hard. It was hard to watch. What she got was totally based on price, cheap as possible. I feel bad for that poor kid. Maybe they will learn guitar repair/set-up though :)

I realize Lee has incentive to sell more expensive guitars but I absolutely echo the sentiment of avoiding the cheapest of the cheap. I started on a FirstAct strat style guitar at 15 and never played it much. I tried a friend's midrange Epiphone and the difference was astonishing. Had I never played a playable guitar, I may have given up entirely and the greatest joy of the last 20 years of my life wouldn't exist!

Mums and Dads, absolutely REQUIRED bit of kit -- a cheap but functional guitar stand, around $10-12 in the US. I cannot tell you how many times over the many, many years I heard about some kid knocking their guitar (that was left leaning on an amp or wall or bed) to the ground and damaging it, sometimes a complete break at the head/neck joint. 🤕 Bottomline, protect your investment with a little bit of physical insurance. There has never been a better time to get kids into guitar and bass. Good luck.

This is just Andertons trying to flog its East Coast brand under the guise of a "what kids really want in a first guitar" format. Despite the girl saying she started on a 3/4 size acoustic, there are no acoustics featured. Despite the boy saying he started on a Squire Mini, Andertons quickly move to their own brand, full size guitars, ignoring beginner "kids" being the market short scale mini guitars are aimed at. The bass looks a bit like an Ibanez, apparently, which is as close to an Ibanez as they're going to get, despite the company making many reasonably priced bass guitars No Yamaha Pacificas etc, nope, this is strictly an East Coast electric guitar promo, no others allowed, and no acoustics 'cause they want to flog you an amp as well. 🙄
