Randy, I've had all of those capos, used them all...I'm an antique too. I like the Paige as well. Slim, adjustable, all around better for the strings. Very good for newbies to see videos like this one. I wish I had this kind of comparisons 50 years ago...Regards, Solomon

I just bought an Elliot "Elite" Capo, engraved with my name and with a leather pouch. It's expensive, but it's a work of art, besides being a very well designed capo and the top-bar, fretboard radius is exact.

I use Shubb partial capos. Necks have different widths, thickness, string spacing and tension, so I have a capo set up and adjusted for each guitar with the rubber part trimmed to fit between the open strings without deadening them. I play both above and below the capo and the lower profile Shubb provides the most clearance. Here's a tip: as the rubber sleeve ages it will begin slipping off the arm. Using a hack saw, cut 1/16" deep slots across the arm, top and bottom, every 1/4" or so and that will help the rubber sleeve stay put. This may be more of an issue with partial capos.
@shargram8 жыл бұрын
Good info Randy, personally I always use a Schubb capo, which you can adjust the tension.You will see it on any of my videos where I employ a capo.I've tried all sorts, but the Schubb comes out tops in my opinion.Any of the ones where you have a fixed tension(cannot adjust), I agree with you, ditch them, they will always give you tuning problems.Great advice as ever Randy, all the best my friend.
@RandySchartiger8 жыл бұрын
Thank you my friend! I agree as long as you can adjust tension you should be good to go and it sure does save you from a LOT of tuning everytime you put one on or take it off. Thanks for viewing!

I've been using the Paige for a few years now and I love them - although I have a coupla guitars with baseball bat necks and they kinda don't work so well with them.. G7 and Shubb have the same type as the Paige for a lot lot lot lot more money. They do look to be more finely machined, but I can buy several Paiges for the price of one of the G7, and 3 of the Shubbs. I have at least one of every capo you showed here - I dare say that I'm older than you so I really got a kick out your video here! Thanks - I enjoy all of your videos!

Randy I agree with you. I have had every one of those capos at one time. Over the years. I currently use the kyzer. But I never thought about it hurting the neck. My son ordered 5 capos from eBay. Just like the kyzer. But some off brand. I truly believe they could break a neck. I put one on my hand. Man it freaking hurt, lol. I am going to buy a new capo after this video. Thanks for sharing. 2 thumbs up from me. Thanks.
@RandySchartiger8 жыл бұрын
You're welcome brother, I'm glad the video helped. Kysers are good for working on a guitar but I'd never put one on an expensive high end guitar even if I was needing to check neck relief. I think I'm going to toss the one I have! lol

In regards to tension, for me what I do is position the spring operated capo to where the pitch is not interfered with. So the spring loaded capo can be situated anywhere between two frets slightly on the ridge, slightly off so the clamp action is manipulated in that fashion. Tightness of the strings depends on that.

Exactly my experience with the Kyser type. Just ordered a H7th Newport. We'll see. My Spider capo is a one trick pony for very limited use, and can be a real challenge. Don't bother unless you have a special tuning in mind (but it's simpler to just tighten the string up a step). Play often, play well.

Hi Randy, Great video! Would you please tell us if there is a real difference between Paige P6E and P6EZ Thanks
@everythingbobbywolfe8 жыл бұрын
Thanks randy. The planet waves artist capo has the grip and the adjustable tension too. Someone might have pointed it out. The shubb is great too, but not great for 1 handed movement imho. The kyser can be bent (as they recommend on KZbin) to release tension. Seems to work well actually. But like most of you, I used to use it for tech work in the shop because of how powerful. I love the shubb for non stage stuff and I think the planet waves became my favorite for stage. Thanks again for your videos!
@RandySchartiger8 жыл бұрын
Planet Wave capos do rock! I like how they are lesser in the way when you play with one on. Those Kysers are good for checking neck relief, that's the only time I ever use one and really the only reason one is still here lol Thanks for viewing Bobby!

I'm surprised at how many guitarists don't know the right way to put on a capo. Talking wrap around adjustable capos here. (The other clamp on ones throw the guitar out of tune to much). Put the capo on, push the string bar down on the strings just behind the fret, tighten the knob while still keeping pressure on the top bar and draw it up till its tight, but not super tight. I've never had a problem with having to re-tune the stings. The other spring loaded type pull unevenly on one side, (The side that has the spring). Their only convenience is clamping them on the head stock when not in use.
@songbyrdsings18 жыл бұрын
I have the older Paige capo I like it for the older Martins also I have a newer spring Grover it has larger pad and it has some space for the thumb hits the strings quicker more surface no out of tune problems maybe I'm putting it centering and slowly... But I love that Paige they sent me two sleeves, I'll buy another and another like you said it's not in the way:) Thanks as always Randy you R the best!!!

I have many styles of capos from the elastic to the Kaiser and have had 2 of the One Click Paige and both have failed under heavy usage However the older Paige capo like you use so far has been a god send I liked the one click of the newer one but if it fails then the capo is no good at all So far been a year of good use and will take it over any other capo on the market except maybe the Elliot, but then who can afford to spend $160.00 on a capo, not I Sir at least not when a Paige will do the same thing for $20.00 And just for those who say I need to try one to understand I did my friend has one we did a side by side and other than the Elliot looking a whole lot prettier no difference in performance But all this is just my thoughts & feelings on the subject and we all make our own conclusion on what fits our playing styles better Thanks for the great insight and as always Sir be well Paul
@RandySchartiger8 жыл бұрын
This older Paige I use has been dragged all over the eastern coast and has really held up well. I've not used the Clik capo on the road all that much but I can see where they would be useless if the mechanism failed. I would love to have an Elliot too but I'm like you the Paige does exactly the same and for 20 bucks and I'm completely happy with it. Thanks for viewing and commenting Paul!

I don't know how I miss this show? But you are correct about to scissor looking pieces of crap that you through in the bucket. I was forced to use one of those several years ago and hit my tuner and it was sharp then I had to just give it a few cents each string to get it tuned. I'm going to get me one of those new adjustable ones that looks like it's a bad sob. I have one now it's it works pretty good but you still got a couple strings usually g&b that are Sharp got kind of a v neck. On this one acoustic and it's my favorite bluegrass and Country and Blues oh hell everything LOL

@analogoutdoors6 жыл бұрын
I prefer the Paige, but one of the guitars I play will not take one. The neck is a very fat V neck, and you cannot get a Paige past the 4th fret. For that I'm reduced to the Kyser. There is a 12 string model from Paige that I need to check out for that guitar, as I bet it would be a bit wider and deeper. Just have not had the time yet.
@pickin4you6 жыл бұрын
You need to look into a Thalia capo. Best capo ever. One handed operation, and no out of tune guitars. They provide inserts/pads to fit the radius of your guitars fret board. This is why you have to adjust those capos you like, so get enough tension on all of the strings. The Thalia does it all for you. They are pricey, but.... they are the best.

True story. My mate used to work in the Hilton hydro in Stirling Scotland 🏴. He was there one night when Eric Clapton was coming in to stay from a huge gig at Stirling castle in 2000/2001 roughly. Well Clapton came in with a few members of his team. My mate was on the desk and claptons manager was speaking to hotel management ect. Clapton was off to the side holding a silver capo while chatting to someone. He sat the capo down and his manager and team walked away along with him and capo was still on the desk. My mate grabbed the capo and called out to them “hey you forgot your thing” 🤦 Eric turned around and said “you keep a hold of it”. So the dumbass didn’t have a clue what it was but knew I was into music and played ect. So he called me on my home phone as remember cell phones really where not ubiquitous at this time, and explained it and I told him what it was. He was 18 years old and had no clue really who Clapton was. He didn’t care either. I wanted that capo. But struggled to get hold of him again because as I said no cell phones. It was apparently inlaid with ornate engraving with Eric claptons name engraved on it. Well guess what my buddy did with that capo. He went along to our local cash converters pawn shop the very next day and sold them it for £20. 20 FUCKING uk pounds !!!! He didn’t even pawn it. He sold them it. I went there the same day to see if I could get it as I was hoping they didn’t have a clue what they had and they let me see it and let hold it and then informed me that they wouldn’t be selling it till it was appraised properly. I was fucking livid. 23 years later this still bothers me. It was beautiful. I’ve searched the internet multiple times for this item and never been able to locate it. It was possible multiple of them got made for his tour along with the pics my buddy got that had the tour info on them. So it could have been one of a tonne of them that he would throw in to the crowd at the end of the night. But a part me after seeing it thinks this was possibly a personal capo. It was too ornate. It was a pretty standard shubb adjustable capo but clearly made for him with his name on there and engraved ect. I’m not a huge fan of Clapton or anything but I hope someone who loves him and plays guitar has it in their collection and didn’t get robbed price wise for something that was essentially traded for a bag of weed. (Terrible weed I may add at that time as Scotland ONLY had weak solid resin and it was awful). That’s my sad tale of when my dumb bell hop buddy traded a musical legends possible custom capo for 6 low grade joints”. I wish I’d never remembered this story. I put it to the back of my mind a long time ago.

Thank you Randy. I got a question. I used an adjustable Capo a couple years ago for the first time and after a while my strings were damaged. especially "d" string. and a while later the "d" string was ripped. Maybe you are thinking the main reason is, too much tension but i am pretty sure that it was not too much. Just normal. The thing is that i just gave up all kinds of capos and i am afraid of them cause they injure the strings. So the accident was quite normal to you or .....? Do Capos harm the strings or not? What is the best way to avoid it? Thanks really appreciate.
@RandySchartiger8 жыл бұрын
Best thing to do it use an adjustable capo and try to get one with the same radius as you fretboard, at least close to the same radius, also make sure it has a good materail to touch the strings, like rubber or leather or something soft so it doesn't bite into the strings and damage them. Hope this helps.

I just bought two new Paige capos on line model P-6E. I have use Paige capos for years like the one shown here by Randy and they are great. . But.....they changed them now....instead of the little bail that snaps over the bar, they put a riveted hook that swivels up to catch the bar. Which is fine except it is very very difficult to unlatch it.They showed the old style in the picture and sent the new ones. As always it seems companies take a good product and improve it until it is useless. If you are going to get a Paige you are better off to go to a music store and make sure it is like the one shown here in this video and avoid the one with the little swivel hook because it is really aggravating to take off the guitar.

I am pretty sure I have one of those old elastic capos somewhere but I’d be hard pressed to find it. I rarely use a capo but do have one of those spring loaded ones. Check out the price of these capos, Tony Rice uses them but they are waay higher than I would ever pay for a capo. www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjDtILz4rzNAhUH9h4KHW6UAUkQFggeMAA&url=https%3A%2F%2Felliottcapo.com%2F&usg=AFQjCNEcLmdqKzxc-6m4ZYNmL8Qj9ujWmA&sig2=uZyKXfT1bSzxVOmVH_McDw Those old elastic ones weren't bad, at least you could somewhat adjust the tension by selecting which hole to latch it on. I like using capos on acoustic guitars mainly to get different tones out of the guitar/ Thanks for checking it out Dale. BTW your package is on it's way, sent you tracking number on FB.

Come on now Randy! I use my camoflauge Kyser 95% of the time. Maybe the camo makes it work better. Haha. Im seriously thinking of takin the plunge and buying a McKinney-Elliott Guitar Capo. Its only $150. Lol. What are your thoughts on their product?

Randy I wonder if you could clear up neck radius for me. I talk to people and they say I have a guitar with a thirteen inc radius a seven,and I don't understand how this is formulated.
@RandySchartiger8 жыл бұрын
hmm you must have a compound radius fretboard then. That probably means it's 7 inch radius at the nut and compounds to a 13 inch radius at the other end of the fretboard. Many guitar companies do this and many have the same radius all the way up the neck. I hope that made sense. The higher the number the flatter a neck will be. Thanks for watching George.

BEST capo is Quick Draw Capo ! You can buy it in Ireland. It's the fastest one to use and your instrument won't get out of tune, the capo can stay on the neck - just slide it over the nut, when it's not used. NOT for 12-string-guitars, but good for 6-string-guitars, bouzoukis, banjos. Other good capos: G7th, Thalia.

Hi Randy! i've tried many capos, i like the G7th performance 2, imho one of the best capos, cause they keep perfectly in tune I tried some capos with the adjustment system you show on this video, but they didn't work for me, the guitar sometimes got detuned Cheers!! /Diego

G7th are great capos! I forgot to mention a lot of these brands people are mentioning in the comments. As long as the tension can be adjusted it gets my vote. Thanks for viewing Diego!

I have been using the non-clic Paige since they came on the market. I tried one of the clics but it failed on me in about a month. About the only spring loaded capo I still use is the Spider capo, which mounts from the fretboard side of the neck. This allows me to capo at the octave and not have to fight a losing battle with the neck radius where it fairs into the part of the neck where it joins to the body. I only capo on acoustics and the octave capo allows me to do a sort of mandolin part with a guitar. (Yes, I use single cutaways!) Even this has cams that can be individually tightened for each string so it is not pressing down on the strings overly tight. It is quick on and off, but the individual cams need to be set up for each guitar as string spacings do vary. All of the cams can also be released and the instrument can be played well below the octave. Not the best capo out there, but the only one I've found that allows me to capo at or above the 10th fret. I do have a couple of spring capos and they work OK as long as the rubber padding is soft enough to allow the capo to seat without driving the strings too hard into the wood of the fretboard. Even so, they get used a lot more for guitar setups than performing, unless I am working solo and do not have to worry about staying in tune with the rest of the band. Also,. the Paige I use can be left lightly clamped on at the nut until I need it for a particular song, then I can loosen it and set it where I need it. I never, ever leave any capo on any instrument when it will not be used in short order. I set it aside, until I need it, or in the case of the Paige, put it on at the nut until I need it for a particular song and then I take it right off. I do not like refinishing my machine heads unnecessarily! Capos, left on a head stock, do nasty things to finishes over time.

Someone else mentioned too that their Paige Clik failed, I can see where they might, mine has held up pretty well but I haven't used it nearly as much as I've used the non-clik style. This non-clik one I do use a lot and have taken it on the road with me and it has served me very well. Thanks for viewing and commenting is always appreciated! :)
@MsJoaniePH8 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of how long the Clic will last depends upon how much it does get used. When I put an arrangement together, I try to use in my practice sessions what I will be using on stage. I do a lot of practice as I want to play a song until it becomes automatic and I do not need to think about what I'm doing. This allows me to add grace notes and other forms of ornamentation in performance. If the Clic I used had a coarser thread it would undoubtedly have lasted a lot longer Even a song with which I am really familiar with, played on a different instrument and using a capo on the 5th fret, will have a different set of muscle memories to it. I think this is why my clic didn't last all that long. It just plain got moved around one whole heck of a lot in that month or two! Still, it was really nice while it lasted!

Hi Randy i have used the Kysers before, and yessir they are terrible and i found like you they put too much pressure on the strings, not to mention the rubber on the front of them that contacts the strings is way too soft and gets grooves in it from all the pressure they put on the frets so you know they aren't doing the frets any good as well, i have one of the Paige mini's that i bought from a local store and couldn't be happier with it, Cheers Sir

I have a few Shubb capos that are decent. They don't fit all my guitars though. I have the old style Paige on my main stage guitar right now. The Kyser stuff isn't horrible but I'm not the biggest fan just the same.

Same here, Kyser probably is best and fastest for checking neck relief but that's about all the use I'd have for one.

Hi Randy. I agree with everything you say, except your description of the Paige clic is the exact reverse of how they tell you to use it. The idea is to use the button to get it close to tension then us the screw for fine adjustment. When you come to remove it, you are supposed to unscrew slightly, then use the button to release it the rest of the way. I did what you say for a couple of years and it wore out the spring. Paige gave me a right telling off when I told them. However, they don't tell you this on the pack, only on a Paige youtube video. If you need a video to describe how to use your capo, forget. Too fiddly, and extremely irritating. The regular one is much better, I use it all the time and don't need to watch a vid!

Shame on me for six weeks too, but I *love* my Keysers. *hanging head in shame...* I have the one that covers five strings & even one that covers three strings if I want. As well as for the 12 string. I have to say I've owed Shubb & I can't say a thing wrong about them...just that they're too labor-intensive for my liking. I also have a G7th (seemed like a good idea at the time), but honestly, I love my Keyser Quick-Changes. You still love me tho', right Randy? LOL! I can be your little idiot friend. =D But that Paige with the click button on the side looks like something I might use... ~G~ ♪

I bet you would love one of the Paige Clik capos, they are supper fast, not as fast as Kyser but they are adjustable and you don't have to re-tune so much when you put them on or take them off like the Kyser. Thanks for viewing Ginger! Yes! I'll always love you! =D

Ah shucks, *blushing* that makes me feel better. I just checked out the Paige Clik capos on Amazon & there's a couple of models for six & twelve. Which is the model you recommend for a six? I'm not ever in a position where time is a factor for me to change a capo anyway, but I do use them a lot & I sure don't want to use something that will hurt the guitars. ~G~ ♪
