I just play like Gene Krupa. My hero and his style just comes so naturally to me. 🥁

I’ve seen so many videos on drumming since I got my first kit some 6 months ago. It’s been quite a journey and it’s easy to get intimidated by all that’s out there. All that you don’t know. Thanks to your video, I was inspired to keep it minimal and focus on what I want to do, cut through all the bullshit. Haven’t seen anyone else put in words what drums mean to me. To your question what got me into drumming: listening to my favourite songs as a teen and air drumming to my favourite parts. I always enjoyed the percussive instruments rather than string ones for how natural they felt to me.

Well I really don't know 'yet' what kind of drummer I am because I only just recently decided I wanted to learn the instrument. I played guitar casually years ago and recently felt that now would be a great time to re-learn with a more mature outlook. It occurred to me however, that my guitar skills were always lacking in one fundamental area...understanding and feeling the beat!! I could play technically, but always fell apart trying to follow the rhythm. I realized that the core/glue to virtually every piece of music that I ever enjoyed was derived from the drum beat. What better way to embrace and understand the emotional impact that music offers us than to be the one who CREATES the beat!! Rock has always been my favorite form of music, so I will concentrate there and hopefully in time with patience and dedication, I will find my passion and thus experience one of life's many rewards. I'm a new subscriber by the way. Great channel...very inspirational.

I started playing drums just because my friend played guitar and I wanted to start a rock band with him. So for me, I’ve always been about the music and the group effort

I wanted to start playing flute and ended up at an open lesson in one of local drum schools. 3 years later - I own the school and teach there. I know so little, and this is what drives me in the second place - I need to be good to teach people good (good in teaching, in drumming, in management etc.) Though the profusion of drum lessons discourage me sometimes, they are what drives me learn drums in the first place. I love the challenge and the sound of it and the complexety of beats and how they at the same time may not seem so and create deep pocket and stuff. I loved Linkin Park in my youth, but Snarky Puppy and Miles Davis and Benny Grebb, and Leprous and etc. drive me learn drums, because it really is a cool thing). And you are right. Im soo deep into this, I havent had a break, a day off for 8 months, the schools is open everyday and Im in it everyday and in drums and though I seem to get better I noticed, that there is nothing else in my life. It's all about this one particular thing. That I lack some info and entertainment and even drive to have those days off (I had kinda one a couple of weeks ago, and I felt really bad after it: It felt as though i lost a great part of me). Im not going to theaters and performances and even have friends to spend time with. And that I dont want to actually. I'd better spend some time playing). It really is my desire to be that kind of all knowing musician, partly.because even if latin music may not interest me, it can extend my playing in others genres, because it's like tools, innit? The more you have, the more you can. Overall, Im that kind of a drummer, I guess. But this video helped me not only with myself. Your video helped with understanding other students. Not all of them wish to be the kind of drummer I wish. Im always discouraged when they slack and come to my lessons unprepared. When they admit that they attend the lessons because they say are a good thing to spend their time on (not learn anything) or when someone says "I wanna learn only Metallica/punk music" etc. Well, everyone's goals differ, it seems.

I have always been fascinated with rhythm. I can remember as a boy beating on the kitchen chairs with butter knives to Mason William’s “Classical Gas.” When I was in grade school they put a cello in my hands. I wanted to play drums! Needless to say, the cello didn’t last long. I didn’t get my own drums until I was 40. I am 62 now and enjoy being musical behind the kit. I find I am most inspired to play when I have others to create music with. I am in a rut right now because I don’t have that privilege right now. You are getting me excited about my drums again. Thanks!

hi Jai ! To me as a kid I remember entering a theater in India where a relative would follow a lesson on a red shining drum... The strange thing is that I shared this memory with him years later and he didn’t quite remember. So I ignore if I dreamt this moment or not... after that I was attracted by tabla skin and eventually learnt to play. Now with age, am moving back to rock and drums. Funny isn’t it... trust this helps your forum of discussions. Cheers ...

my interest for the drumset rhythms and sounds began from the track called Members Only by japanese composer Ichiko Hashimoto. sloppy sounding breakbeats. Lately it was Iambic 5 Poetry by Squarepusher and Alexander "Dooser" Voronov's DnB-like drum part from the song "Тема прошлого лета" by the Russian alternative-experimental rock band Tequilajazzz. Since that period I was into all kinds of complex syncopated groovy stuff.

Love the positivity Jai your an inspiration man! What made me want to play the drums is going to see a Ska Punk band called Less Than Jake, I had never been to a gig like that in my life I was blown away by the sound of the drums it was just this powerful sound that I never heard before that was a great moment for me, I knew I had to play the drums from that moment on!
