This is why this is the only podcast I always watch. Tim sees the same things I do and although it’s not saying Dallas is primed for a huge explosion, it does seem that Dallas’s defense is having as much or more of an effect on Boston’s shooting as Boston is having on Dallas’ shooting. So if Boston isn’t going to suddenly put up a 50% three-point shooting monstrosity, then Dallas has a chance if they just play a little better. You know Luca is going to play big in all these games so it’s just a question of if we see the real Kyrie, and if we can get 3 to 5 big shots from the role-players. All that matters is game 3 and if they finally break out of their slumps and put together a game that drowns out all the noise and all the obnoxious Celtics fans and we finally have a series . If they lose, then they’re just not ready yet.

Man, as a California transplant living in Boston, I'd really love for this to become competitive, but I just don't see it. Boston shot less than 30% on wide open threes in game 2 according to Second Spectrum tracking data. If they just shoot their yearly average on wide open threes, which, by definition, Dallas isn't really affecting, then they win the game by 20+ again. I really, really hope something changes in Game 3.
@SDesWriter5 ай бұрын
@@izzynarvaez1223 that number is complete bullshit. It literally means that there was only a defender within 6 feet of the shooter at the time of the shot 11 times in the entire ball game. I’ve got data that says it was 89% WITHIN 6 feet. I’m so sick of this garbage…I’m going to go over the fucking tape myself tonight to see why these numbers are so ridiculously skewed. I know I remember five contested that I recall off the top of my head and two of them were heavily contested.

@@richs00n 3 to 5 big shots is a lot of ifs in a 48 minute game? From anyone not named Luca, Kyrie, or PJ? You guys are just out of your minds
@izzynarvaez12235 ай бұрын
@@SDesWriter If you want to go purely by the eye test because you have problems with tracking data, did you personally think that holding Boston to 26% on the 3s given their shot profile in Game 2 was repeatable? It didn't look that way to me upon first viewing, but I haven't rewatched the game.

Can the MAVS incorporate some dedicated post up play for Gafford or more so Luka which could force Boston to send some help defense and open up the floor for the role players?
@matthewbedient15255 ай бұрын
4 or 5 games. The celtics are better kn the road. Best of luck.
@jackdu6875 ай бұрын
One thing I really don't understand: why are Mavs not playing pick-n-roll more to get lobs for Lively and Gafford? Boston is small outside of KP. Luka is so good at putting people on his back and then throw the perfect lobs. That's a much higher % play then the 1-on-1 difficult plays they've been running.
@nickbarry70395 ай бұрын
The Celtics are playing Tatum on the bigs to eliminate lobs because he can just switch onto Kyrie or Luka any time they call for a screen, it's way harder to generate lobs off the switch opposed to dropping or hedging the screen
@jackdu6875 ай бұрын
@@nickbarry7039 I agree and thanks for the explanation! I wonder, in the case of having Tatum switched to guard Luka, the man on Lively or Garfford will be small, why are they not capitalizing that? Also, Luka vs Tatum is not a bad matchup, since Luka is mostly only affected by strength not length or speed. Tatum is not nearly as strong as Luka
@nickbarry70395 ай бұрын
@@jackdu687 very good point about their bigs not exploiting mismatches, i'd guess it's because neither Gafford or Lively are very good at generating their own shots, Lively in particular. Gafford put Tatum in the post a bit and was able to convert here and there. As for Luka, jaylen has done the best job on him but even guys like Tatum and jrue are making him work for his buckets. I think the Celtics are just content with making things tough on Luka and living with everything else. Luka and Kyrie are really the only guys on Dallas who can create their own shots, so I feel as though them having to be efficient in isolation while also generating quality looks for the role players is just too big of a task night in and night out
@jackdu6875 ай бұрын
@@nickbarry7039 Yea I agree with you 100%. Lively and Gafford aren't shot creators, though they do run down to the basket well given the chance. My biggest issue is that Boston puts Horford on guards and Mavs insist on attacking Horford, resulting a pick-n-roll of Luka/Kyrie with Derek Jones instead of Lively or Gafford. This completely eliminates Mavs big men advantage, and then forced PJ and Derek to shoot at the arc not on the wings, where their percentages are way better. I know that Boston did this deliberately but JK did nothing to adjust and basically got out-coached. This is very frustrating to watch 😤 Like you said, Boston plays good 1-on-1 defense and Luka and Kyrie are laboring out there without an effective attacking system...
@nickbarry70395 ай бұрын
@@jackdu687 Yeah man for sure, I'm a Celtics fan so of course I'm slightly biased but going into this series I liked our chances based on the fact that our complimentary players greatly outmatch the Mavs. Luka is clearly the best player in this series and absolutely insane on the offensive end but he can only do so much.... Mazulla also doesn't get enough credit for how good of a coach he is since he's a bit of an oddball and our roster is stacked. It's far from over though bro, the Mavs can definitely turn things around if Kyrie starts getting 20-25 every night and the role players start hitting their open looks. Game 3 should be a slugfest brother!!!

If you say CC is not one of the 12 best, you could argue DT is not currently one of the 12 best female basketball players either! There's still a chance CC gets a spot as an alternate due to injury. Chelsea Gray is injured and hasn't played yet this season but she's on the team. So we'll see maybe she gets a chance 🤞🏽 if not this year, definitely in 2028 Los Angeles

OK, if Boston is making them pay for Luka letting the ball handler go, where is the production? Tatum was six for 26 so he’s not making him pay. Boston was 10 for 39 from three and at least four of those literally had nothing to do with Luka or any rotation issues. How difficult is it to track how many points are resulting from Lucas defense? Because Tatum is supposed to be getting 25 a game so if Luka is giving up 20 a game, that’s a net positive. I don’t care what it looks like, I care what the actual consequences are and if it’s leaving him more energy to play offense where Dallas desperately needs him.
