I’m actually so shocked at that one guy who said Amharic isn’t a beautiful language. The man’s talk was very melodic and gorgeous… it’s so rude to insult someone’s culture to their face. Oh, and it’s really interesting that the Arabic influence in Amharic was so quickly picked up on across the board. I’d thought they were all completely off base, so to hear there was a relation was intriguing.
@Sam-tq6xr

As a Canadian of Filipino descent, I really resonated with the last conversation between the Filipino girls. After immigrating to Canada, my parents wanted me and my sister to improve in English, assimilate to the dominant culture, and succeed in a new environment. They spoke English to us at home and in public, but conversed in Tagalog to each other or Filipino relatives (to this day, they still do this). As a result, I understand very little Tagalog when listening to it, have difficulty reading it (such as watching reports or headlines on Filipino news channels), and can only write down certain words & phrases I've heard frequently. While I feel a lot of pride for my Filipino heritage from being raised in a city with a large Asian community (Vancouver) and eating Filipino cuisine, not knowing enough about my language and culture continues to make me feel like an outsider among Filipinos, especially if they speak & understand Tagalog. I feel this disconnect whenever I visit the Philippines to meet with relatives. It's an uncomfortable experience being surrounded by people with the same ethnic and cultural identity as me, but they follow a different dominant culture than the one I grew up with. I often feel "too Westernized" for being unable to speak Tagalog, as well as connect with my community meaningfully.

I've studied Sanskrit for three years, and I'm a native Hindi and English speaker. I must say, I'm very surprised by the striking similarity of Kurdish numbers to Sanskrit ones at 6:02. They're almost identical, including the pronunciations. It shouldn't be all that surprising after the Indo-European languages connection, but I've never seen another European language (Or well west Asian) that's this similar. Perhaps it's closer geographical location with Persian, Urdu and Sanskrit is a reason.

@heavydutytech Add to that, we were colonized by Spain for 300 years. (Up until now, Tagalog still retained some Spanish influences.) Then the Americans; that's why English is our second language. So I was actually quite confused on what you said as "Majority of Filipinos can not differentiate P and F". I guess you haven't meet that many Filipinos yet. And also, do fix your punctuation and capitalization.

How is saying that he didn’t like the language rude? In my culture honesty is valued so I don’t get what he should have done different? Should he have lied? That would be very U.S American (and incredibly rude in my country).

Valeria Vagapova Exactly we don’t know. And he does look like he didn’t enjoy that remark, but that doesn’t mean he has a negative opinion of Karlos. He was just having what seemed like a genuine laugh seconds before. People putting this dude down for nothing. For example at 6:30 there appears to be no problem at all. It’s a technically racist remark, but she’s a normal person and gets that it’s a fucking joke.
