My FAVORITE part of the conference was the children's choir singing "Gethsemane!" Just... WOW. ❤ Then Bednar's talk, and Nelson's talk, and most of the rest.

@@Freddy78909 As a school teacher, I would say (:-) that "boredom" has more to do with the listener than with the presenter. A doctor reading a medical text is boring, but focusing on the principles in the text is vitally important.

@@phav1832 What about church members reading off their phone or a piece of paper during service? And every single time they read a general conference talk? Because that's what my church does. Personal testimony is rare.

@Freddy78909 I read off a paper that I personally wrote when I give talks. I don’t like to just have a basic outline on notecards like some do, I get too nervous for that and prefer to have all my words prepared and laid out. But I definitely write all the words/choose quotes to share myself and include my testimony as I feel moved to do so. That seems to be how it goes in my ward all the time, for most people (though I dunno how much people might use AI to write talks for them… hopefully not a whole lot) 🤷‍♀️

Much of the "authentic self" as defined by the world is the "natural man" which is what we're here to over come. True authenticity is sharing our struggles in doing so, not in sitting on our laurels and excusing our entropy and apathy with "that's just who/ what I am" and resisting the thing that would assist, heal, and strengthen us.

I loved the handful of talks that made mention of Japan! I just got called to serve in the Japan Fukuoka mission, so it felt like a confirmation to me that God really was a part of assigning me to a mission where I needed to be!

Elder Bednar, Elder Holland, and others that I can't remember really warned us to get our act together and be humble and obedient. I thought that was powerful and needed. The thing I heard that I thought some members might not like was Pres. Eyring's admonition to keep our teaching simple. I see so many comments on social media about wanting more "meat." Be careful what you ask for.

I consider my authenticity as being a disciple of Christ and following his example and teachings. If others feel they can only be authentic without the church, they should look at the big picture and do what they feel makes them authentic and happy.

What I got from it is for example, I grew up under an angry father. My dad was mean and a lot of the time angry. So for several years of my teen and post-teen years I found myself getting annoyed and angry in many situations. But, if I knew then what I know now of my relationship with my Heavenly Father I would bring my authentic self, or carnal man, into subjection to the Holy Spirit’s leading and guiding and spiritually be changed to a kinder and calmer person. And I’m not correcting nor would I dare to correct Elder Soares, just sharing what I got from his talk.

I wonder if the "authentic self" means changing the parts of ourselves that aren't Christlike. I know someone who's "authentic self" includes social media addiction, and seeing technology as he would a toy. These are not his fault, and due to circumstances that out of his control, but to fix it, he would need to change his "authentic self" through Christ. By putting off our own addictions and sins, and letting Christ change us into purer versions of ourselves, we change our "authentic self" to better reflect the teachings of Christ.

To entertainment the kids during conference we do a bingo game. Everyone chooses a word, and my word was "Horse" (that was the first word that came to mind) and my kids were like "no way...just no way this will be said during conference" After hearing the word dynamite I thought everything is possible...and then during the Sunday morning session Elder Budge said it!!! Everybody cheered.

That is what it generally is. We all are authentically natural :). Being “authentic” isn’t bad, in and of itself. But what one chooses to be authentic about, is what matters. It doesn’t always equal being “virtuous” 😊

I think people misconstrue giving into every hedonistic desire they have as being "authentic," when in reality, the natural man is an ENEMY to God. If Elder Soares' talk offends you, you probably need to do some soul-searching.

Superb analysis of the “authentic self” bit. I agree with the intended message; the wording was problematic, and we ought to have charity for that. Unfortunately, people tend to speak past one another on this topic. For example, “my truth” is often interpreted by the orthodox as a belief that many contradictory things can be true at once, when it’s really just the trendy way to state one’s personal belief. And that’s nothing new-people have always held personal beliefs within the Church paradigm resulting in differences, even among top leaders.

Because being a Disciple of Jesus Christ is our "actual full" authentic selves. Here is self reliance IN Christ... or being a reliable creation--fully-developed and properly set-free IN Christ enabled Exaltation--Divine Authenticity or Completion.

There’s a difference between sacrificing your favorite sins because you love God, and being a cookie-cutter mold of what the culture proclaims “acceptable.” There is also a difference between struggling to keep the commandments and not keeping the commandments. The church, and the culture found in the church, are two different things. The culture tends to focus on appearances; the church focuses on applying the atonement in your life every day.

I loved this conference but I'd love to hear your thoughts on this: Maybe my mind imagined it, but I head several talks mention the whole concept of speaking your truth vs speaking God's truth. You touched on it a bit when discussing how we are to give up our "authentic" selves for God's potential, which I agree will be hard for a lot of people to follow (including myself). When should I allow myself and others to "speak their truth"? Is it bad to be tolerable of people when they go against God's truth? and when should I just let go of that and just "love thy neighbor"? I'm praying to gain personal insight, but I always love to know what other faith focused members think :)

I don’t necessarily see that as needing to correct or call out other people whenever they express an opinion that doesn’t align with the gospel (especially if they’re not members of the church). However, I do see it as an invitation for each of us to ask ourselves whether we’re living the way God wants us to live rather than the way we feel like in the moment or based on our own limited understanding. I think we can be genuine in expressing how we feel, but we should strive to choose to trust and follow Christ and God’s will regardless of our present feelings or circumstances. I also think that loving your neighbor is more than just telling other people they can do whatever they want. Agency is critical, and we shouldn’t force our beliefs on others, and our love shouldn’t be dependent on other people doing what we want, but I think true love includes a genuine concern and desire for the welfare of other people, and if we truly believe that the gospel leads to joy and lasting peace long-term, we will want to invite and help people who are willing and open to live the gospel to experience God’s love and find that same joy. That is loving our neighbor as Jesus loved us, who gave His life for us and invited all to follow His example. Those our my thoughts, anyway. What is your perspective on this?

I understand your concern. It is getting difficult to navigate this concept. Many in the church are straying from the covenant path and trying to be “of” the world. The two do not align, nor will they ever. Those of us trying to stay in the covenant path are now “self-righteous” and judgmental. It’s disheartening. This has been prophesied and people are falling right in line as expected. Stay true to your covenants while loving those who don’t.💕☀️

The bit of conference not broadcast was when the native Americans (representing 19 group) came to conference with thier valid tickets, only to be refused entry and escorted out. Chief midegah isn't happy about that. Can you follow up on this?

I don’t think you are representing that inaccurately. Did you watch all of his explanation? I too was ashamed with the whole misunderstanding and then the treatment he received when he explained the situation to security. It was a problem with the ticket reader on 1/2 of their tickets. When the problem was finally resolved their seats had been given to those in overflow. They were not allowed to stand in the lobby and listen.

My authentic self is someone who believes in the gospel of Jesus Christ. The most hated I have ever been is by members of the LDS Church for being my authentic self. I love my Catholic wife she loved me at my worst. The members of the church couldn't love me at my best. The gospel is true the members of the church are not.

Every single one of our authentic selves is lesser than the example of Jesus Christ. If you're offended by this you lack humility. Many peoples "authentic selves" are not good people at all. We should stop saying, referencing and getting in our feelings about terms like authentic selves. We should start talking teaching and acting as if the goal is to be the best possible versions of ourselves. Too many of us could use a little less authenticity.

I am surprised you're still using the term "LDS church". I really have liked your viewpoints and content but "LDS church"? Maybe that draws in the crowd that needs to hear your message?
