Likewise when Toulouse went down to Leinster a few weeks back I think France learnt a good lesson for the RWC. Just because Dupont can play at 10 doesn't mean they should put him there. He's far too critical at scrum half. And it was good for Ramos to get a rubbish game out of his system. That said the Toulouse backline isn't France as much as Leinster equals Ireland.

@@Hometruths29 Lancaster is almost as overrated as shaun Edwards.
@Joe Absolutely, this notion that Leinster is basically Ireland is wrong, especially when it comes to the bench, though even the starting team is a bit better, as Beirne and Hansen are 2 of our better players, an actual Ireland team in particular however would have had far better replacements. Lowe, Ross and Gibson Park had poor games after a good start and yet were not substituted because basically the replacements were not at the level required. You left out some notable names there by the way, all Munster. A few other names that you left out who would have been in the Irish 23. Beirne, Murray, O'Mahony, Bealham, and Crowley has been playing well lately, so he would have almost certainly substituted for Ross Byrne. Comparing this match to the France Ireland game makes some sort of sense, and the notable difference is every single substitution that day added to the level of the Irish team performance, whereas every substitution took away from the Leinster performance.
@russellblake9850 Жыл бұрын
I don't think you'll beat the rush defense with raw speed and fitness, everyone has that now. It is about performing under pressure, how do your star players counter their stars. It is about understanding how to apply the new rules ... rules close down some things, but also open up others. It is about scoring 7 points when you have to ball more often than they do. Possibly (and this is a death knell for the game) scoring long distance penalties. It is about devising tactics that the rush defense exposes ... chip kicks ? long distance hacks (maybe for a 50-22, which I don't like but no one asked me). the new tackle law is going to be a sh*t show.

It is a fair argument to say that Ireland are the same as Leinster - the resemblances are striking as well as the personnel. France take elements of the Larochelle power game, but they take quite a lot from how Toulouse like to attack, as well as a structured chaos that is fairly unique.. I think what you can take away from this is Ireland and Leinster are beatable under pressure (especially without Sexton), whereas from a French perspective there are a few class players who know how play this power game.

La Rochelle have relatively few of the French national team in their ranks. Furthermore, unlike most French teams they are managed by a foreigner Ronan O Gara who knows the Irish game intimately. La Rochelle have had the wood over Leinster the last few times but the difference is marginal and could have gone either way in both finals. Both of these teams are class and I am sure they will contest more finals in the future. The one difference is La Rochelle tend to buy in more bespoke imports and the Irish province want to bring native players through their excellent academy system in a way similar to what happens in New Zealand. Both systems have their merits but I think the Leinster system will work well into the future whereas you do wonder how they will replace a physical specimen like Skelton when he moves on. Also O Gara wont stay forever, He wants the Ireland job.

It's not Ireland though. Look Leo Cullen is a decent coach but O'Gara has his numeber. However Andy Farell, Paul O'Connell and Mike Catt are different they let Ireland play free. The real turning point in that game was James Ryan going off with HIA he was monstering Skelton every tackle he was also Leinsters Captain when he went off. I was surprised by the lack of leadership from the leinster players especially when Ross Byrne was screaming to take a drop goal and they ignored him. What I'm trying to say is Ireland has more leadership Sexton will be back for RWC and Ireland will have a Beirne and O'Mahony and Aki to add in. France won't have Skelton to use. Put bluntly Andy Farrell is a much better coach than Leo Cullen and Ireland have shown they can adapt on the pitch where leinster have never had to because they have been dominant all year they have only two games all year by a combo of three points. That's excluding the academy squad they sent against the Bulls.

Others have mentioned the names already, but add the contingent from the other provinces and while the starting team improves, the bench is a whole lot better. Oh the vitriol this week against leinster. Quite shocking really. People really hate top sides - there was a point in it sportsfans. Leinster does not = Ireland btw. Look at their 40 man roster, its half. Majority of starting 15 maybe but like someone else pointed out, leinster lost last year with an even worse margin and Ireland won an nz series just a couple months later. Andy farrell will take this game and use it as research.

Not the Irish team. That Leinster team was missing world class Tadgh Byrne, Peter O’Mahony, Mac Hanson and Jonny Sexton. All these player can think on their feet and have the dog in them. A drop goal was needed at the end and nobody had the bottle to take it. Losing your captain after 30mins wasn’t ideal either and Tadgh Furlong was carrying an injury. Some bad decisions were made on the day 🥴. The Irish Coaching team is totally different too. It’s not the Irish team so forget the mind games. That LRS team are bigger than the SA team. It is such a pity that such a brilliant final will always have a # marked beside it. As it will always be remembered as part of the era where South African teams that took part in the competition, were not allowed to select sides based on merit. Just like all the super rugby finals of yesteryear. It is so sad that our generation will never know or can never be 100% sure that their side has won fair and square.
@harshbutfair8993 Жыл бұрын
At first I was thinking what are you talking about? I'm guessing you might mean some sort of political interference in ensuring Non white players are represented to some minimum level, is that what you mean? Leinster didn't "bottle" it. La Rochelle beat them. Anyhoo, La Rochelle beat them last year, then Ireland won a series in NZ, beat France, SA, Aus, and England, and Scotland, Wales....etc..etc....etc.... La Rochelle has many French players but not many France players. France, if the pressure motivates rather than suffocates, will win the whole thing.
