Would it be possible to get either the name of the movie repeated at the end of the description, timestamps, or a written list at the bottom? Hey Rowan, really loved this video! Just wondering, but would it be possible for you to make a video about LGBTQ+ films in different languages? For example, recently in India a movie called Badhaai Do got released which follows the story of a gay man and a lesbian in a marriage as a societal and familial compromise and it's really well handled. Some really nice shows are out there as well, like from Japan, What did you eat yesterday for gay rep and Koisenu Futari for ace representation. Also, in shows, some of the recent Filipino BL series like Gaya Sa Pelikula and Gameboys are also quite worth mentioning!
@ninil1562
@ninil1562 2 жыл бұрын
As someone who watches a ton of Asian cinema, I was rather disappointed that Rowan's list involved mostly western productions. There is a huge list of great LGBTQ+ shows/movies that have (or are) coming out of places like Japan, Thailand, S. Korea, the Philippines, Taiwan, and even Vietnam. Yet, they seem to get overlooked a lot when it comes to lists like these.

I’ve just watched “Il filo invisibile” (The invisible thread), an Italian film that came to Netflix this year and it’s about two gay dads and their teenage son who is making a documentary’s about them for his school project. Whilst the story centers on the (straight) son, it is very much about the relationship between the dads as well. It’s a very sweet film, I recommend it!

I caught several movies at Flare this year and would also second the recommendations for The Novice, Girl Picture, and Framing Agnes! Another aspect of Girl Picture which I really liked was that one of the three protagonist's storylines explores asexuality, which is something I've not seen in a teen coming of age movie before so that's also super exciting. And particularly cool for a movie to be unafraid to have multiple LGBTIQA+ storylines existing side by side in different characters - often it feels like pieces of media have the token gay storyline given to one character and it's easy to imagine that being the case for a film like Girl Picture that features three protagonists all going through different things, so I really appreciate that the film was interested in exploring more than just one letter in the LGBTIQA+ acronym!

Thank you for making this video, I'll definitely be adding these to my watchlist! Although, I think I'm going to give The Power of the Dog a pass just because I'm not sure if I have the patience to wait for a surprise twist to the trope of a queer coded character getting bullied for being great at arts and crafts. I didn't realize how desperately I've needed to see queer joy and not just queer adversity on screen until I was listening to Andrew Fuller talk about his lovely life with his husband on Is It Cake and started balling my eyes out.

Was almost jumping up and down and clapping when I saw Rurangi was on this list lol... I actually saw it at Flare last year (you were right, it was a web series and then they cut it together into a film) and wrote a basically glowing review, it's not perfect but it's still gorgeous! BTW, if you do end up liking Rurangi you might also like Fragrance of the First Flower - another one that started as a TV series! it's a Taiwanese movie that was at Flare this year, it's about two women who fell in love in high school reconnecting after marriage equality has passed in Taiwan, only one of them's married to a really boring man and she has a son... it's very angsty but with lots of rlly beautiful and wholesome bits as well. Anyway, loved this video - all of these are going on my watchlist! : )

Omg I actually saw Rūrangi at Flare last year (when it was all online) and it was easily the best of the 6 or 7 films I saw. It was so educational about so many things, not just trans issues but also the struggles of Māori people and the erasure of their culture. And it did it all in this fantastic show not tell way, it never held your hand to explain things. You could kinda tell it was a stitched together webseries as some plots were only around for a short time and never fully resolved but the whole thing was so interesting and the ending left me feeling uplifted and inspired. I believe it has made its way on to some streaming services in the US (hulu maybe?) and I would 100% reccomend it if you can find it!

I’m pretty sure What If was renamed as Anything’s Possible. It’s on Amazon Prime for streaming. I watched it recently and it’s super cute, mostly light in tone, and definitely the trans-rep high school love story I was looking for

Can someone please respond to this comment with spoilers for What If? I really wanted to watch this with a friend, but she’s REALLY sensitive to films and won’t watch movies if it doesn’t have a good/happy ending. Please tell me what the original thread said so I can tell her and convince her to watch please! I can’t find it anywhere!!

I feel that since Harry is such an open man and he doesn’t care what people think about him and his sexuality he is a great role model for anyone, now that he is in a LGBTQ+ film he is making a bigger career in not only acting but being a even bigger role model, but I have been a fan since he was 18, I also wrote this before watching your video, I just saw Harry in the thumbnail 😆 and I LOVE your hair, and videos

Yes, more queer horror! If everyone-the villian, the people who die, and the people who live-is queer, than I don't see the problem. If they set it in a conversion camp and kill off only queer characters while some random straight hero lives, I will not be interested in that. Or have a queer killer killing off a bunch of straight people, but, I doubt the movie would do that. Make all the characters queer and skip any negative tropes! I'd really, really love to see queer men in horror, as their portrayal has been either just hinted at through subtext or very negative in the past, while it seems like there have been a lot of queer women in horror movies. Either way, looking forward to Whistler Camp, as I loved Fear Street too!

harry styles himself is also queer, having claimed multiple times that while he doesn't want to publicly share what he labels himself as (it being personal and private) close friends and families know.
