What Lies BEYOND the Veil? - Harry Potter Theory

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we're discussing what lies BEYOND that incredibly creepy Veil that’s kept in the Ministry of Magic’s Department of Mysteries.
As you may recall, the first introduction we have to the Veil is in The Order of the Phoenix, when Harry, Ron, Hermione and other members of what will later be known as Dumbledore’s Army storm the Department of Mysteries. During their exploration of the department, they find themselves in what is disturbingly referred to as the Death Chamber, which is described as a large amphitheatre with tiered seating encircling a dais. And upon the dais? The Veil. A tall pointed archway made of ancient stone that’s so cracked it seems to defy gravity just by staying upright. And fluttering within the archway is, of course, a tattered, black-you guessed it-veil. Evidently the Veil has been around for as long as the Ministry. And judging by its deteriorated state, likely much longer. This, of course, suggests that the amphitheatre was built around the Veil, rather than the Veil having been found elsewhere and moved to the Ministry.
So, what exactly is the Veil?

In my opinion, the Veil archway is more likely a direct line to the other side when one dies. Harry was in limbo because his body had not been damaged beyond use, giving him the choice to move on or go back. I agree that Luna and Harry could hear the voices beyond he veil because of their shared experienced with death.

I always thought of the veil as a direct line to the land of the dead, but that in no way precludes purgatory from being where you go when you die naturally. Sirius just happens to fall directly into a portal to the land of the dead when he dies, skipping the "in-between".

Good video. So the veil was found in an underground cavern and the whole of MM was built up and around it? I havent seen a map of MM but the room of prophesies next to it seems deep below. That's just blown me away because it all makes sense, especially when we know that originally london floor level was 50ft+ lower than it is today.

I think the veil is a direct pathway to the afterlife that bypasses limbo. Now, we need a theory about what would happen if Voldemort went through the veil. Normally, his horcruxes would prevent him from accessing the afterlife.

The idea that the afterlife is "THE" afterlife is incongruous with the HP mythos. Ghosts; purgatory; the veil; "on." All different paths for the same journey. Sirius goes "beyond the veil." The literary expression, in this case, is literal. Technically speaking, we don't actually know WHAT the veil is, but it seems to be associated with death and is presumed to be a one-way trip. There could be 1000 different variants of "the" afterlife and it might be possible to shift from one to another. And, given the fact that those touched by death can hear voices, it's possible that you may, in some form, even be able to shift back into the living world. After all, there's the other (Christian) expression about pulling back the veil (from our eyes). We may find that the "afterlife" is just regular life but somehow veiled from the eyes of the living.

There is a theory that the resurrection stone is actually a fragment from the veil archway that was used to be one of the hollows. Which if you think about it does make sense.

No, that is exactly what I thought. I was certain that it was no accident that if both Harry & Luna were the only ones who could see thestrals, then it followed that they alone would be able to hear voices from behind or within the veil.

Neville could see thestrals as well.

@@TV-ge3uj No, I don't think so. Thestrals could only be seen by those who had witnessed death. Neville's parents hadn't died, but were hospitalized at St. Mungo's

@@jkrause365 I was speaking about Neville's Grandfather. When he said that he could see Thestrals, Umbridge asked him with typical kindness whom he had seen die.

What I find interesting is the amphitheatre built around it. What was that for, if not to hold executions in some time long past? Any thoughts?

@kyleethekelt I agree with that! Perhaps the Vail was used to execute witches and wizards that committed unspeakable crimes and were too dangerous to be left alive!

What would happen if you poked a long stick through the aperture the veil hangs in ? Would you die if you put only your arm through it ? I want to know the answers.

Could there be a link between the veil's whispers and thestrals? They both manifest (one audibly and the other visually) only to those who have seen death or been touched by it and they both carry a meaning of travel, one swift, the other irreversible. Are Thestrals made of the same stuff as the Veil? Maybe an ancient dark wizard (or Death himself?) understood or mastered the essence of this concept to such a degree that he created the Veil as a lure, a trap or even a reward for those wizards weary of life. Can a Thestral bring you to the Veil in an instant if you long for Death? Eh... water under the bridge.

I always found the subject of the veil super mysterious. I agree it might be a gateway between the living world and the dead world. And it also make sense to me that the voices will be of lost loved ones. If I were in the HP world I would have seen Thestrals and I would have heard voices from the veil almost in certainty. I would have liked to experience both things that would be amazing. BTW you said that the group that went into the department of mysteries would later become DA. But if my memory from the book is not mistaken me I think they were already the DA.

Maybe the veil leads to the stomach of a Thestral that feeds on souls instead of meat. I don't know why, but it seems to fit pretty well.
