Most of the lyrics Chris Barnes had written were based on real people, and events. Entrails was written about 2 brothers that actually did what the song title applies. Barnes had a friend that worked at a penitentiary, and would tell him about the sickest inmates.

Chris Barnes is the Alfred Hitchcock of death metal. While other bands just talk about killing people, Chris Barnes takes you further into horror death metal. It's also not just the music, it's also the album art that takes things to a whole different level. No other bands back then had album artwork like Cannibal Corpse apart from Mortician.

He's pretty spot on about that, the early Barnes lyrics are very depraved, when we were playing that Cannibal, people who didn't know asked "what's he saying" and we'd be "you don't wanna know!"😂 I can also that they mentioned Black Metal, Per "Dead" Ohlin definitely wrote his lyrics from a very dark, bleak place, although it helped Mayhem and Norwegian BM solidify itself as a genre, he truly was a deeply disturbed person

I totally see where Kyle is coming from but also there is a positive side to it looking in reverse. When fans get into the hobby with “lighter metal” a lot of times that opens it up to delve deeper. Many of us started with Metallica or maiden and that opened the door to appreciate “heavier things” my first exposure to “harsh” lyrics was in flames. Likely because the melodic riffs pulled me in even if that vocals were not my original cup of tea. Now I listen to all kinds of death metal. This is the same for lyrical content. The blood and gore aspect is not attractive to newbies but there are gateway bands that expose it to you and it grows on you and you discover heavier things and build a taste for it.

That old stuff was authentic. Our generation avoids authenticity and tries to hide behind a veil of irony and self deprecating humor. There is a common sentiment I hear from people now, which is basically, that the old metal music was just kayfabe and larping for the lulz. Of course, they also really want you to know that they are totally in on the joke too, you know, because "its just edgy and funny". At least those old bands had the professional courtesy to stay in character, commited to the gimmick, and at the very least attempted to sell the whole illusion, so that we, as juveniles, could believe it was real.

Yeah, he goes fully into channeling those murderers. He was a grunting Profiler and on stage "medium". But Cannibal corpse's members do not come from a dark place. They were naturally interested into the music form before it became a "handy" thing to do or like. Same goes for all OG Metal Fans, epople that listened to Metal in 80's and 90's besides Korn, Metallica or likewise had to do that from an inner impulse rather than from external factors. The external factors, Zines, Videos, Shows needed to be consumed by your own decision. Thats also why all long haired people greeted, trusted and knew each other. It took some determation to show interest into something that was not popular with normal people and or even learn an instrument without music lessons yet being specialized into teaching you how to do it. Most are basically self taught back in the day. Also that added to the integrity.
