1:20 The FJ24 definitely was used in Group B, in the 240RS, however, it was not successful as one of the few naturally aspirated 2wd cars left. Nissan actual led the Safari rally with the 240RS one year, but all three entries failed to finish after cylinder head related issues. Toyota came the following year with the 'Whistling Pig' Celica Turbo and they cleaned up 👍

Great video on a great motor, back in the 90's in Australia these were to go to transplant for any four cylinder car needing a performance upgrade.

@andy cantrell thank you for the kind words! I really appreciate it!! Ohh, that's very interesting to know that these engine's were a common transplant at the time. Thank you for sharing!! Cheers have a good one!👍

Thanks for the info, it would be safe to say you would be surprized to learn that i have a 60,000 km Stock DR30 skyline. I didnt realise how rare they have become.

Happy to know that the info was most useful for you. That is really surprising with that kind of mileage, in these days that could be assumed as basically brand new. Yes, they have become really rare and out of reach for some as they have shot up in price as well. Hope you have a great day!!🤗👍👍👍

@@JWorldAdventures The car is still in the making bcs iam trying to restore it to a factory new status... iam from Germany so mods are not taken lightly here, maybe lowering the car and rolling the fenders. Thanks for asking :) iam a big Classic jdm lover so iam kinda trying to give it a 80´s japan tuned look withoud getting to edgy!

@@Wavey.808 I understand what you mean the dreaded TÜV certification as well as the inspection process. In Japan it's strict as well regarding the shaken inspections, that is why all of the aftermarket parts in Japan are shaken certified in order to pass and not get a violation. I believe that you're on the right path here with the period correct modifications and good luck with the restoration. 👍👍👍

The USA never got a FJ-series engine.
@JWorldAdventures
@JWorldAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is quite unfortunate as the FJ was very potent back in the day. Even today it's still quite a good engine.👍👍👍👍

The FJ20 engine held the technology that would later be used on all of the RB series engines The snout driven oil pump replaced the shaft driven pump that was on previous engines. The bucket shim set up on the Valve train is also a feature of the fj20 and RB engines. The inlet ports are massive on an fj20. So are the conrods. They are around the same size as a 400ci chev V8. The limitations on the standard fj20 engines were the pistons with the ring lands prone to failure when running higher boost. It comes with a duel row timing chain. The Fj20 was originally designed for the C210 skyline but the engine did not go into production until the release of the R30 skyline. To achieve 400hp you need a proper aftermarket computer system. You need forged pistons Arp head studs Aftermarket exhaust manifold Quality turbo and wastegate Bigger throttle body Muticoil ignition system Larger sump I highly doubt the Japanese were making 400hp with the mods you mentoned. Probably more like 280hp

@JWorldAdventures Жыл бұрын
@Gavin Wilson Thank you for the insight. And I completely agree with your counter argument, about only making around 280HP. Although being limited by the technology at the time, forged pistons were available from the likes of Tomei, and it was common to install better material head bolts and not the studs we all use these days. Nonetheless it's still a very stout engine. Have a good one!👍

@@JWorldAdventures I can remember when I would spot these worked Japanese engines at the engine importers back in the 90s. They were more often than not a basket case engine. If we spotted different colour cam covers or sealant around any part of the engine we would stay away from it. The best motor to find was a low km uncracked standard intercooled version. Anyways the money days of picking one FJ over the other are well and truely gone. They are very hard to find now in decent rebuildable condition. I had FJ engines for over 20 years and surely learnt a thing or two about them. They are a great engine and the reason Nissan discontinued them was the cost of production was too high. There was a 3rd version of the fj20 planned and some very last number blocks above 54000 have a higher nickel content in the block hinting this was what was to come with the 3rd version fj20. Ca18 replaced the FJ20 then sr20. The fj20 block is very strong aswell. They are a bloody great engine and I was lucky enough to own around 8 of them and do nearly 1 million kms of FJ,20 powered driving over the 20 year period. I can't find a decent fj20 anyone and if you can are usually very expensive. My cheapest fj20 was $600 back in the day. Now the same engine is around 4-6k. I can't justify it. I'm currently working on another Datsun with another type of factory Nissan 4 cylinder turbo engine that's not very common to see anymore. I'm looking forward to finishing it off

@@Punk510 Great insight once again. Thank you so much!! My Dad and I used to do the same thing before with the Toyota 2TG and 18RG engines. And a serviceable one these days would be hard if not impossible to come by. A datsun project eh; is it a 510 by any chance??? It just piqued my interest. Good luck with the project and I believe that it will turn out great!! Have a good one 👍 👍👍

@@JWorldAdventures Yea 510. I had a Fj20 510 for as I said around 20 years. By chance a mate gave me a 1 piece body shell. It had a door or two and a bootlid but he wanted to keep them part's. So I started with a rusty 1 piece shell. Bought suspension and all the panels. Motor gearbox diff. I got all the dash parts and 1 year later I have almost everything to build the car. It's been alot of work lots of welding. I just finished making engine mounts gearbox xmember and getting the engine in place. Today's job is to fit a throttle cable and make brackets. And work out some of the EFI wiring loom. I'm building pretty much most of the car then I will tear it down again for paint. Then reassemble. I will put something up once the car is finished but at this stage no photos until it's finished. I want to keep it under wraps this build as it's going to be something you don't see too often. In Australia anyways. Back to the fj20s did you know I found a pre production Fj20 on Yahoo Japan about 10 years ago. It was advertised as a Nissan works Lz engine but was definitely fj20. It had one offset bolt in the spark plug area on the cam cover. It also had 8mm inlet and exhaust studs ( instead of 10) It was believed to be out of a works Nissan/Datsun stanza. It ran duel carburettors like solex or the like. Also an ex Nissan mechanic from South Africa confirmed that 3 stanza factory Nissan Rally cars were sent to south Africa with fj20 engines.He sent me a photo of one it looked very similar to the pre production one I spotted on Yahoo Japan many years ago
