For me, what really captured me was the mysticism. Going in blind, I had no idea what monsters I would meet, what dangers were lurking in the new biome I found or how new items would work. It's a similar experience to when I first played minecraft as a small kid. An endless expansive world to explore, freely!

For me the meadows in Valheim is the number one spot to just hang out and chill out of all the games I own. I spend 90% of my time building cosy homes in the meadows. The selection of nice looking building pieces as well as the lighting sound design just makes a well built viking home one of the most inviting places to be in the digital space.

What I love about this game and what i don't get in every other survival game besides a little bit of Rain World is that it's just simply fun to exist in the game. I don't need to be fighting constantly to have fun in this game, it's fun to sit down by a campfire and watch the sky on a long voyage, or to sail a boat to another continent. It's just fun to exist within the world.

another thing i think helped a lot for valheim is that among the many base building survival games one game with a very similar style already existed and cultivated a large community around it before valheim even existed. that game is known as "Medieval Engineers", it was a game with many of the same features (but with less focus on graphics or lighting and far more focus on planetary scale voxels, structural integrity, and mechanical movement (ie. carts, catapults, trebuchets, etc.)) but unfortunately by the time valheim came out medieval engineers had been abandoned by the developers in order to focus their efforts on space engineers. the community fought to keep the game alive through modding until eventually the company (keensoftwarehouse) decided to give the players what they asked for and released the source code for the game in what is now known as the community-edition branch of the game. despite that a lot of the old playerbase never returned (likely either bc the game had no hope of transcending itself anymore, or bc they simply didn't know about the community edition. most of these players ended up in valheim instead.

The Building is what connects all the Dots in this Game. They masterfully incorporated it into the Gameplay loop. In Minecraft for example (not dunking on it btw, its still OG, but a completely different experience) you just dig a hole, put your Chests in it and thats about it. Valheim highly encourages you to build a large home base, but not by throwing random stuff together, because structural integrity is a thing, you need a fire to sleep/cook, but for the Fire you need a chimney, you need to upgrade your workbenches quite heavily to craft better stuff, to the point where it becomes basically impossible to just whip out the best workbench on the go. Same thing with comfort, you are rewarded for building a very comfy bedroom with all the extras, because the rested buff is possibly the most important thing in the game. And as you progress, more and more stuff gets added to your base, so you are always encouraged to come back after a long adventure and refine all your items right in the home base. Not allowing Ores through portals was also brilliant, it allows you to cut the repetetive back and forth short, but still requires you to make a few long hauls with a boat full of precious metals across the Map. You can of course refine it right on site, but then you need smelters and advanced work benches and all the upgrades and so on, which in turn encourages you to build a bigger outpost, and so on.. The stuff you fill your base with is actually functional, thats what makes it so rewarding. Building stuff because it looks pretty is nice, but building stuff you need anyway AND make it pretty is just amazing. I could go on for hours about every single detail that amazes me in this game, but building is my favourite aspect. and jesus, its not even finished. 2 more biomes + several minor updates to go, can not wait.

Me and my friend did a whole playthrough not too long ago however we modded in quality of life features like taking metal through portals, and in general we enjoyed it more than we were before. but that didn't discourage us from building bases or expanding into new lands, in fact it made it more fun. we wanted to make a single major base in each biome and we did! (minus the swamp that area sucks) like out house that later expanded in the meadow, a tower in the black forest, a grand castle in the mountains and a huge mead hall in the plains. the game kept us inspired and let us keep enjoying it even when we made the experience much easier. Its truly a fantastic and beautiful game.

I hate how so many people hate on it simply because the roadmap changed and updates weren't released as quick as they originally planned and hoped for. I mean, we knew the size of the dev team and that they weren't expending just because they went 'viral' in a week. Even so, they continued to meticulously work on the updates we've gotten so for and in some cases put out a bit more than we were planning, and really expanded the world. And even if they didn't - assuming the unfinished biomes were polished or non-existent - they already had an excellent casual adventure game that many people put 100's of hours into. And yet some of those people still hated on it for not polishing and finishing within the last year even they they got 100's or even 1,000's of hours of fun gameplay out of a $20 game that didn't think it would gain so much popularity.

I love the building style. With the exception of trying to build poles down into water, it is one of the best. The support mechanic adds a lot of thought to it. You can't just create an infinite span of unsupported platforms. So what you build actually ends up looking like a building. And the homes you send up building give you this sense of safety and warmth, away from the bleak, deadly landscape. You know... Until the forest moves. Ps... 11k views and 700 likes? Come on, folks.

20 years ago Peter Molyneux made a wild claim that in his future game (Fable) you could plant a tree, watch it grow over time, chop it down and plant a new one. Of course that was an outlandish claim, he was famous for those and of course it did not come true. Valheim really reminded me of that I'm living in that future right now that game developers were dreaming 20 years ago
@primisto75302 жыл бұрын
While I love that I have to build outposts and plan my routes and it adds to the immersion and difficulty, not being able to teleport ore does cause some rather annoying issues when it comes to buildings. Considering supports are the fundamental part in building something large(er) than a normal house and a lot of decorative furniture is locked behind iron, having to sail across the sea (with wind usually being unfavorable) for it every time I run out (which is quite quick) is kind of annoying. By this point I usually just find myself world hopping to farm my iron, it is much less time consuming. But Valheim definitely is an adventure of your own making and encouraged by this system. I still remember making a little overhang for my workbench, then a little shack just large enough for a bed, then building a house on top of a hill and eventually transforming the overhang into a large hall with stone walls, the rest of my encampment, including 2 seperate fields for plants, surrounded by spiked walls. As you progress your base is forced and encouraged to grow with the progress. Not to mention all the comfy outposts for mining/access to swamp (etc.). In other games base-building is just a secondary aspect

The atmosphere. The lighting and the tone of the game just makes it so pleasurable. Plus it looks like my backyard forest. Finn here. Doesnt hold your hand but doesnt try to make it too serious or hard either, also it does one thing that most games dont get. Fun over everything, over realism and challenge but not too much.

For everybody complaining that the game doesn't update enough: you're clearly a Nostalgia/Novelty player. I think this game isn't made for those of you who are, because as a *mastery* player, I have yet to get bored of the vanilla game and I've been playing it off and on since mid 2021. I've spent more time collecting up components to make my bases bigger, I've spent more time trying to exploit building mechanics and game loops, I have literally never run out of good times to be had on this game. And the additional option to bring in friends on occasion or to open a server and work on the off hours to progress one another has been everything I've needed in a game that anything in the last decade hasn't even come close to. The fact that they've optimized with the lighting and textures to provide access to a wider range of machines (on top of just looking better overall) and have spent an inordinate amount of time locking in their gaming loops but have given us options to tease them open has been an absolute delight for me.
@kokorochacarero80032 жыл бұрын
For me, the game excels at three things: 1) The thrill of embarking on an adventure to get resources foreign to your home biome 2) The creative challenge that comes with the development of infrastructure to transport, process and store those resources 3) The feeling of returning home from a long, dificcult journey and getting all cozy at the base you store all your treasures in A game doesn't need bombastic mechanics, a AAA budget pixel count and endless and overcomplicated progression systems. All it needs is to present the player with a couple simple problems and give the players the tools AND the freedom to solve them creatively. Valheim is a clear example of developers doing more with less, and giving the player the right tools to create their own fun. I've considered a full game since even before Heart and Home came out, but Mistlands has been amazing so far and I can't wait to see what else the devs have planned. I'm a big advocate of adding more mechanics that are not necesarily game changing or power focused but help create community and intrinsic motivation to play the game; like adding musical instruments you can play, or simple objects players can create their own minigames with like a ball.

From someone who's got thousands of hours in survival games for PC I feel that after release and its success something happened to the devs and they lost whatever inspiration originally made this game great. Some stuff I've seen in mods would've been great additions, which leads me to believe my vision of what this game should've been wasn't so off, and then there's the Mistlands biome, big nail in the coffin, there was even a mod that populated the placeholder biome and it seemed like what was the right thing to expect, but then we got what the devs gave us... I've never seen something so annoying and out of place, so uninspired and just random, the placeholder gave out great vibes, dark and foggy/misty place with cobwebs and giant human skeletons? Sign me up! Spiders and spider caves, it all looked promising, but no, we got some made-up-out-of-nowhere place with magic Haldors and weird insects, and the place isn't even dark/misty, it's very colorful and bright, they added "the mist stuff" to justify its name, like WTF, you already had a great placeholder, why not just work on that? Anyways, I get passionate about these things, I'll go touch some grass now.

Really great video ! Simple yet interesting. Idk if this kind of essay has already been done countless of time, but it poped up on my recommendation (I watch way to many guides) and I'm glad I watched ! Btw, is this your world ? Great buildings ! Random question but do you have a small friendly server ? I only play solo, but it may be fun to share in an adventure with someone like you 😅

Thanks for taking the time to comment :) It's a friends world that he let me do some filming on, mixed with some footage from my own server that we haven't gotten very far on. Sorry, it is a private server though.

Short, has a point, good. I'm not like ... jumping from happiness, but ... I enjoyed this video enough to invest more time into making my comment than it took me to watch it. 😀 Cheers! ;-)

the "minecraft" building style, im pretty sure, you can do a bunch of stuff like BREAKING THE GROUND AND FORMATERRARING IT, a simply stuff you CANT do in any other game instead of minecraft. its literally minecraft but for adults. even the pvp in the game is kinda good when you add some rules to it on a server.

It could really benefit by having more updates even if they are minor fixes in between the major content updates. Mistlands took about a year and a half since it became popular to release and they only put in two thirds the amount of content it was suppose to have I.E the crafting stations required to upgrade items in the mistlands the full amount. A good recent example of this was when they did some balancing with the dead raiser (Necromancy) item and removed the super rare component to craft and just replaced it with 4 skull trophies. This wasn't because the devs wanted to change it, but because the players brought the issue to light. While I am not condoning complaining for updates in specific things it seems to be the only way to get through on certain issues. I won't say that the game isn't worth the purchase, but if you're expecting a major content update more than 1 time per year you are going to be disappointed. They simply lost the momentum when it got popular nearly 2 years ago because of the lack of updates to keep players interested in or more people buying into it because of the popularity from maintaining the players. Only a handful of people actually play valheim anymore and that's just to either have a nostalgia hit or because they wanna see what updates came to the game. Personally it was a really good game and still is, but overall I just wish it had more updates to keep the player base invested. Maybe this game will grab mainstream attention again in a few years, but until then i'll stick with what i've said.

Thanks for the long comment. I can see you're passionate about the game. Yeah I guess that is the ish with small dev teams. Game development takes a lot of time especially with a small team. I'm sure they're working their hardest. We have to be reasonable with our expectations. In terms of the player count, it's kept a decent player base since it's release and it will see big spikes every major update. It's also not a game with a lot of replayability, its got a pretty fixed 'campaign' despite the randomized elements, so it makes sense that it doesn't have a huge player base all the time.

This is easy to say in retrospect and as an outsider, but I think the devs should have prioritized a steady stream of small updates, even if they are almost trivial. The seasonal crafting stuff is kind of like this, but it needs to be a bit more meaningful than a couple decorative items (I know, I know, I just said "trivial"). Even if they are working mainly on serious refactors or bugfixes in the background, just having small new things that players can look forward to every couple months I think makes a big difference. It might not get people playing continually or every time one of those small updates comes out, but I think it does encourage people to come back. One of the sad things in the last couple years was that every time I would check in to see if there was more content, the answer was "no". Now I know there was Hearth & Home and Ice Caves, but those are just so far between and just those 2 over 2 years is pretty slow. Maybe even just spreading the content in those out so it was more of a steady stream would have helped. I think it's hard for players to get invested in an unfinished game when it doesn't seem likely to get ANY new content in the 1-2 month window they pick it up and try it. It's an interesting case study of player base retention though I think. What could have they done differently, is what they have done going to be enough in the long run, it remains to be seen.

Basically, the studio is made up of people who were fed up with certain tropes in survival games, so they tried to make one that didn't fall into those traps. That's my take on it at least. 🙂 And honestly, they succeeded beyond anything I would have expected.

What made Valheim successful is devs that didn't make a game that was grindy, tedious, and have nothing in updates but nerfs and more nerfs... ...which sadly isn't the case nowadays

I'm curious, most of the online videos about Valheim rave about how good co-op is, would you say the experience is worth it as a completely solo player? #nofriends
@Springheel012 жыл бұрын
I mostly played solo, and I think it's still completely worth it.

Ngl, they slowed it down, but hell, why did they made metal supports... Make them "Fine wood supports". Building massive structures in survival is pain. You use stone? Oh, so you want to spent 300 h to gather enough iron for walls? Agh, defensive wall is looking fine ,but now map is mined out of iron, gotta start new map and slowly transfer iron from there! Fine game loop.

My only real complaints with Mistlands so far are that it feels unoptimized and causes a fairly sizeable fps dip especially where the fog is thickest, and that the devs seem focused on "fixing" things that aren't actually broken like seeker soldiers and gjall instead of addressing the things that *do* need fixing, like the ballistas targeting friendlies and the new gear not having full upgradability

I fucking hate that you can only look 5 meters ahead in the mist. Everything else would have totally been fine for the most time. It sucks seeing nothing where you go

@@roofie1695 imo, it'd be a lot better if the dvergr circlet worked in the mist, even if that meant having to upgrade it with silver and wisps, since the wisp light we've been given is so unreliable

Awesome game.. but in the end.. satisfactory, minecraft, valheim.. if you have building elements it turns into a architect/lego show competition for most players It's the genes of competition for decorating your house for christmas on the neighbor I guess.. (Except if the building mechanics is bad like Fallout, of course)

I love this game but I will say it's just a bit too long winded and tough to play solo without wanting to pull your hair out. The game definitely benefits from multiplayer.
