Man, I really miss the "blocks." I got into magic at the start of Zendikar. I miss when we had three sets, all exploring one plane and its characters/ stories. Now Hasbro is just sprinting to the next idea with whiplash as their companion. I want it to feel like the story matters again. On that note, F--- Hasbro! Proxy everything!

I am not against the beyond universe sets because now they finally do not feel so out of place, if only the universe within sets sounded better than "your favorite MtG characters in vehicles" and "your favorite MtG characters in space suits". I hope they do enough real in universe stuff, so magic does not die without them noticing because "it sells!".

@@thevoxdeus Assassin's Creed is half as old as FF. AC getting that treatment is fine. It's not fine for FF. FF is way better and iconic across all it's games. Only good AC game was black flag and that's because of navel combat, which isn't even a key game play feature in the series. Following NPCs around is boring lmao

I came here for a video about the upcoming 2025 sets and not a diatribe about UB. OG magic isn't being replaced and/or phased out. If you don't like UB then don't buy/play them. It's a colorful cardboard game, this isn't that serious.

Let's be honest. Universes Beyond just isn't helping the situation. Things like Duskmourn and Aetherdrift or Edge of Eternities are the real killers of the franchise theme

Honestly, hearing that aetherdrift is gonna be focused on 2-color tribal archetypes, I'm not super pumped. I'm mostly a limited + commander player, and tbh while I like tribal support cards, I never think having such constrained archetypes is good for limited or draft. It's easy to signpost, but I shudder to remember some games of bloomburrow limited where half of your boros pulls don't synergize with a boros deck because oops you only got 3 mice

so if i have an eternally powerful dragon, who has warped space time and realities beyond our understanding, attack and get blocked by a single human soldier who was given flying by a literal angel, that's totally fine as long as none of those guys happen to exist in IPs here? am i getting this right? it ruins the IP having the Wise Mothman in the game but having a massive abomination of dead elves is incredible for the game?

I just wanna make sure I'm getting this right, Ojer Taq is a literal god who can create life and also if he gets touched by a singular goblin with deathtouch he dies and becomes a land, that's all incredible for the lore and story of Magic. If that Goblin was instead a named zombie from the Walking Dead, now magic is dead as a game?

I mean we have seen gods get corrupted and get injured before, so a deathtouch goblin killing a not indestructible god isn’t unreasonable. You also picked the smallest hill to defend with the walker tokens which honestly could and should have been just a 2/2 zombie instead of a named zombie.

I think WOTC has already figured that the Magic IP cannot hold itself so if thats the case I guess it's a good thing cuz I want this game to keep going. If thats not the case then oh well just be at their mercy and deal with it and enjoy the good parts when they come out.

Magic IP can’t hold itself??? Before Universes Beyond, Magic was still the biggest selling card game in the world based on the merit of its own IP. Magic was in no danger of failing without Universes Beyond. The only thing WotC figured out is that appealing to the lowest common denominator in consumer society makes more money in the short term without the production costs of art concepting and world design.

@ilyafoskin interesting opinion. You must not have played back in the days of chronicles, fallen empires and homelands, all almost destroyed the game. Now times are changing and newer players are more interested in the non-magic IP whether we like it or not. Obviously it's all opinions, we don't know but one thing is obvious and they know what they are doing as the game is still going..

@@Troy_34 What do Chronicles, Fallen Empires and Homelands have to do with this? Those came out in 94/95 when Magic was in it's infancy where the success of the game could be disproportionately affected by any given set. By 2020, Magic was firmly on top of the trading card market and no set in recent memory could even be described as nearly "game destroying". Universes Beyond was absolutely a choice for WotC and Magic could have and still can survive perfectly fine without it and remain number one. The idea that WotC have no choice but to go in the UB direction because for some reason new players just seem to like non-Magic IP better is laughable. Newer players are only interested in non-magic IP because they were sold a product that wasn't Magic and now they expect a game that isn't Magic. The justification for UB is circular.

I think the Universe Beyond is EXCITING. The game becoming part of so many different stories and characters such as marvel snd assasins creed, is definitely different and hard for some people to accept but this is the direction the game is going. Whatever, I like it, and agree it's a kittle overkill sometimes, but the more they do it, the more refined it will become

Everyone crying about universes beyond, did you ever stop and think that after 35,000 cards maybe it’s hard coming up with new stuff? They have made just about everything they possibly can. Anything new would be either a copy of another card and so similar it doesn’t matter. UB gives them other worlds and characters to add in. Some are ridiculous of course like spiderman is kinda dumb, but Final Fantasy and Lord of the rings are perfect for MTG they fit very well together. Quit whining or quit playing

We (or at least I) understand that but my counter point would be that magic has been taking inspiration from other media for some time now (war of the spark and march of the machine and even the start of the gate watch saga obviously taking a lot of inspiration from the avengers movies) but it was always that inspiration but with a mtg twist to it. Now they are taking inspiration and the characters from other IPs.
