Tbh we need a full podcast just to go into this topic. Limited and Cube are great and more people need to see that

The biggest challenge I found with fixing in cube was making it so each player had 4-6 duals, when usually two players have 15 and everyone else gets 2.

some of that is just player preference in the draft portion which is hard to change, but one thing I’ve found which helps free up the fixing is to run a ton of 2-color lands but really cut down on gold cards. The players building the “5 color pile” are often leveraging the fact that the most powerful cards in the environment are multicolor.

it can help to encourage your drafters to eat their vegetables, so to speak. weak fixing doesn't reliably punish 5-color soup, it just makes 1-2 color aggro worse at punishing 5c when their mana is shaky. you could also consider giving the 5c deck something more aspirational to build around, like the 4-color Aragorn or a rainbow Niv Mizzet, making their picks not just focused on just the best card in the pack at hand

I started years ago with a pauper cube and now I put that energy into a powered cube. Agree wholeheartedly with Pat on this point that you want to strike a balance between giving your players the pieces they need to feel like they can build something cohesive, but don’t make it too one-note. Part of the fun of cube is finding less obvious interactions and making something cool. I like to try to give colors more than one theme. For instance red is a good aggro color, but it can also be a strong control color. A card like Fiery Confluence bridges the gap by working as either one. Including different kinds of cards in the same colors also lets multiple players dip into each other’s colors without necessarily stepping on each other’s toes.

i've made two budget, peasant-ish cubes so far, and i like to have the archetypes i build have some focus in 2 or 3 colors, but sprinkling a little bit of support in the other colors, and trying to make archetypes with overlapping colors have similar interests or payoffs that work well together. a black/red sacrifice deck might find some appeal looking into blue/red spells cards if it can pick up a young pyromancer.

IMO the iteration is the best part. I love fine tuning my cubes by making little key changes and sometimes that’s putting in fun, off theme cards like the vampire Basic Mountain mentioned.
