These lectures are live, where we discuss, "What makes a Great Game?"
And as we discuss this, we will see, over the course of this series, whether I am able to get closer and closer to that ideal- to see if I am able to instantiate a great game into reality. I have skin in the game, so to speak, because my hope, as is the hope of all true game developers, is to create a great game.
The first broad theme of these lectures is on the nature of Education. And hopefully you'll see with time how the nature of education is directly tied to the nature of quality- and what makes anything great in the first place- or at least better than anything else.
0:00 Intro Passage - Excerpt from 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance', by Robert M Pirsig
3:10 - Mutetastic butt fumble
6:00 - Starting with self-discipline in autodidacticism
12:00 - Autodidacticism as the start of true creativity
18:00 - Marrying what you're good at, what you love, and what the world needs
21:48 - Learning how to write, learning how to speak, learning how to think
22:38 - Tying it all back to autodidacticism and game development

Great video, I perfectly agree with you, and there is something that I'd like to add. I'm older than you, I'm 50, and in the last twenty years I've always invested my time only in what I liked (with self-discipline, that's absolutely essential!), without thinking about making money out of it. Guess what, I always ended up earning some money, sometimes even much more than what I considered reasonable, compared to what I was doing.

I enjoyed this vid, ty. Probably the most meaningful game dev vid I've ever watched.

Is the word "paint" being used figuratively? What kind of creatures or objects can the player create using the paints? Are these creations bound by any rules or limitations, or is the player free to experiment and bring their imagination to life? Or are these creatures abstract? Ie not physical at all, but rather abstract entities like emotions, ideas, or concepts? Will continue through the series.

My ideas are evolving significantly over the course of this series.

Or rather, a better way of putting it is, the 'instantiation' of those ideas into a game are evolving. The ideas themselves are fairly fleshed out. My axioms, I would say, are reasonably sound 😄

Glad I read that book growing up, it's pretty sophmoric and full of liberal fantastical thinking but it taught me to at least consider the null hypothesis in all situations.
