OMG. I just started to build a poster and I thought "Let's check YT and see what other people are doing". And your video was the second one I saw, I saw Mike Morrison (?) video and you both totally changed the view on how to do a scientific poster! I saw some posters in the insitute I am working and they're all overloading on info! And just the fact that you walk by kinda quickly and don't have the mind to take full account of all poster is sooooooo good to know! It is actually super helpful to think the creation of a poster the other way around. It's genuis! I love it! It's about the reader and not about me, it's not about me showing off my awesome work but to get strangers a quick overview of the topic ... THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE INSIGHT

Andy, I did not realize this ahead of time, but I just realized that the Research Poster section is nothing more than ... The Adult Version of a Science Faire. It looks like just an advanced version of when you were a kid and teenager. And my thought was, "Are you kidding me? This, again?" It just blew my mind. In a way, it seems academia has not moved forward as much as I thought it was.

This is great but sometimes theres just some projects that are fundamentally not gonna be explained with figures, no way out. Plus some of these examples would just not fly at some university departments and get downgraded for being too artsy.

Thought: if supervisor / prof wants more words then ask them how much they will pay. Start at £2/word and see if they will negotiate (upwards). Have a picture of a billboard selling a chocolate bar to hand as a prop for the "what am I selling, what is it worth discussion" (it won't have many words, and will be there to 'Attract Attention'!)

Yes, it is! It can help you get feedback about your work and learn all about academic conferences. Place your poster near areas of high traffic - beer, food, doors, if you want a better experience

I have been assigned an available size of 4ft x 8ft. What program allows me to prepare a poster of that size?

You can edit page size in most tools, even PowerPoint or Photoshop. So you set the canvas/page size before you start, then you’re going to have to view it by zooming out, obviously. Stick with non compressed formats (TIFF, SVG), and especially avoid bitmap formats (BMP) or low res compressed (eg PNG, JPG). Always worth test-printing to make sure the image resolution comes out as needed for that size: what looks good on the screen at 15% magnification may look terrible on the poster. Good luck!

Nah. The QR-code-only poster completely misses the point - the poster-session is for talking to people - those presenting the posters your interested in and most importantly the other scientists that are also interested in the poster your interested in - not collect QR-pokemons. Much better to have the A4-printout of the poster to hand-out to interested people - that also works as a guide for how much text you can have. Scientists are childish - include something like flip-book style animations or a proper 3-D fold-out figure. Even if it doesn't add incredibly much to the content it makes the poster memorable.

Yes! I agree.. Logo-supplied colors are totally RUBISH. They want you to use their imbalanced and no harmony color combinations that will ruin your over all design. I'm a graphics designer by the way.

Scientists are sometimes pretty strong in concentration and deep thinking. Don’t assume everybody is like drunkards with low attention span. Not everybody watches tiktok or youtube shorts all the time. Some people really go for detail, which is not all the time communicable by talking as the presenter may not be there or may just be busy with talking to others.
