What Makes a Great Singer | Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
What Makes A Great Singer?
This is such a subjective concept.
In a world that places such an emphasis on range (and physical beauty unfortunately) it's good to talk about this important topic for singers.
One person likes one singer because of range and power, another person like a singer because of their storytelling or transparency, another person likes a singer because of their intensity and so on.
In this video we discuss various types of singers and what makes them great.
I hope you enjoy it and I welcome your thoughts and comments.

To me a great singer is someone with a unique voice that sings with emotion, clear diction and doesn’t need a million notes to get their point across. Nina Simone, Kate Bush, Mark Hollis (from the band Talk Talk) are just 3 off the top of my head. There are many more...

Funny. I just told one of my voice students the other week that the difference between a good singer and great singer is empathy. As musicians, we are manipulation artists, essentially. If your audience isn't feeling the way you want them to feel in any given moment thru your craft, then we're not doing our job right. God has blessed me with an insane range, but some of my most favorite recordings we're the ones that didn't go into the stratosphere. The beauty of simplicity. Raw, honest, heart-felt simplicity.

OMG. I AGREED WITH ALL U HAVE SAID! Right down to the example of Bob D. I realized the criticality of ability to story tell ! When I was in HS and in band, choir at church, school choir. Marching and Concert Band..... I was excelling in several specific areas of piano, flute and singing. My Jr and Sr years, I could play most pop ballads of that time and could just blow people away withStairway to Heaven. At the time I didn’t realize what I had was NOT talent. It was really being competitive and DETERMINED to be better than all the stuck up kids that used to bully me. I took first chair flute away from the Jrs and Srs when I auditioned in 9th grade. Anyway in hindsight, I was just repeating lines and phrases x a billion and demanding perfection. It’s a kind of talent to dedicate yourself and hard work DOES pay off I suppose it’s good that I’m self aware, too. Thanks Ken for all the great points that I think most take for granted 🤗

Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy thank YOU. In hindsight, not sure I conveyed myself well. My puppy (male) is like a sick toddler because the female in heat. He cries nonstop. I was trying to say there’s a common misconception of what ‘talent’ is. Most people who have the opportunity to take lessons and the capacity to learn can be taught to sing and play well! I’ve never understood how-about five or so ‘stars’ got where they are! However, like with Stevie Nicks; her lyrics and delivery have such intensity and the musicianship of the band...?! Take the song ‘Edge of 17,’ and The Chain; the vocals she delivers are absolutely HAUNTINGLY beautiful. She just doesn’t have the traditional boxes checked. She’s still gorgeous but wow she was an incredibly beautiful woman during that time they were becoming famous

I found out why and that's because I haven't really found what kind of artist I want to be. I once read that when Jimi Hendrix was pressured to sing he decided if Bob Dylan could do it, he could too. A successful bassist once told me I would have to sing to get more gigs as a blues harp player. I ended up singing by default. The instrumentalist who sang the best. Cheaper than having a designated singer. Ken got me into singing so much that I was happier with my vocals than I was with my harp playing the last time I played out.

Great observations! I completely agree with you. Your example is Dylan, mine would be Leonard Cohen. He was one of the greatest who's voice was "beyond singing" if you will. There are many great singers with great a great voice, but still can't touch my heart. As a singer if you can't "sell" the story of the song to your audience you will never be truly great no matter how good is your voice. Skills alone can get you close to the top, but how well can you emote on stage is the only thing that could make you a legend.

I love all the points you made! You even made sure to point out that its not all high notes and fancy vocal acrobatics. Rather, it doesn't have to be, because each singer is different. As long as they have the technical side down, and aren't struggling to do things, there are many who can become great singers. Though it is depending on the person listening as well. The one person that does come to mind, that inhabits all of those is Dimash, but I believe (and he's said something similar), that 95% of what he does is through hard work, practice, dedication, persistent and sacrifice. It's all about the work you put in, is equal to what you get out, in a way. Thank you for the video, I enjoyed it. Which is interesting, cause my next suggestion is about Dimash and an epic react request! Please react: Dimash & Li Yugang singing a duet of two songs "Drunken Beauty/Concubine" & "Diva Dance" @ the Shanghai Spring Festival Gala kzbin.info/www/bejne/boWWe2yKprpgh68 The performance wasn't that long ago. You know about Dimash, but Li Yugang is a traditional singer and a performer in the China National Opera & Dance Drama Theater. He specializes in "nandan" role, which is male who plays female role in Peking opera. So he sounds like a female when he sings and go insanely high like Dimash! They do a duet of the DIVA DANCE (and Dimash may sneak in a whistle)! Honestly, its an exercise in showing off (for both of them) and I would love if you could react to it! Dimash did a little of everything and Li Yugang is epic! I really would love to hear what you have to say on their performance. More so what you might have to say on Li's traditional chinese opera style-singing. They compliment each other, because DImash is just a chameleon who knows how to change his voice to match his partner!

Ken, I've been fronting bands since the age of 13 (I'm editing this to add: I'm 63 now, and gigging at least 4 times a month). I've been told I have a pleasing tone, mellow and low, but I admit I am not the greatest technically. I "make show" (that's a Beatles Hamburg reference :)) and feel most alive and 'real' on stage. I enjoy making a connection and taking people somewhere that feels good. I like to make them laugh with stage banter too. It's surprisingly easy and effortless for me. I probably wouldn't make round one of one of these singing competition shows either, but the feedback I get from the audience is humbling and inspiring and I could never explain "what it is"......that connects me with the people and the music...but it is a form of magic. BTW, I like your hair pulled back - it is more flattering to your handsome face. As a footnote: I dabble in keyboards and guitar and it's extremely hard to play and sing, so utmost respect for those who have that talent. xxoo Let's all make the world a better place. La

I feel Amy Winehouse is the best singer I've ever heard but I'm not smart with music and wanted a better understanding. This explains a lot. I always felt Amy had 100 years of jazz in her vocals, sheer talent and gift but couldn't grasp why and how. Really helpful and thank you🤗 Edit: After thinking more on it for a moment, it seems she was a master at both sides you discuss. The artistic and technical. Makes a lot of sense. She sang her whole life, plenty of practice. Pair that with her natural talent for the artistic side and I see it more clearly now. Much appreciated🙏

You can roar like Gramm and hit those clean high notes like Volz and on many of your higher notes you reminded me of him. Great combination. Please consider a reaction to Greg X Volz. Yes. I knew she was great, but seeing her go out of her comfort zone with many different genres in the Beste Zangers made me realise just how good she is in projecting the emotions besides just sounding great. She really has that uncoscious competence and that's why she can concentrate on the output. I've read from several media reviews and interviews about Nightwish's new album and there should be some really acrobatic vocals there (Marco and Troy said they were glad to have only one song to lead as Floor had to put in an enormous amount of work there). The first single will be a bit more easy to digest I hear, but still waiting for it. Oh, and thanks to Ken for this video, quality content as always.

I think there’s a difference between a good singer and a good vocalist. Not to undermine singers but I feel that good singers are good at just singing. They show their prowess with pitch, runs, projection, diaphragmatic support (learned that from you Ken.), etc. They’re voices are pleasing to listen to and they convey emotion and technicality in their songs. Vocalist on the other hand do all that plus more in order to fit the songs they sing in. Mike Patton, Robert Plant, Devin Townsend, John Lennon, and Kyo are among my favorite vocalists for that reason. I feel that they’re amazing singers as well as amazing vocal powers. I also appreciate great singers though for different reasons. Sara Bareilles, Myles Kennedy, Frank Sinatra, etc. Are all incredible singers but they don’t seem to push their voices past what they’re used to. I don’t know if others agree but that’s my take.

I think this is a hard question to answer. If we take the word "singer" and assume it's only about how skilled the person is with the voice itself isolated, then the people that can do things like a lot awesome melisma will be the ones considered not only great, but the greatest. But I like to take the word "singer" as both the person who sings professionally(or like a professional) and an artist. The skills then will be part of a greater purpose: the purpose of communicating feelings, enlightenment of humanity through music, etc. etc. etc. So in my opinion, a great singer is the one that will be truthful and honest with what he or she is singing, because than it means they're being truthful to the people who are receiving their art, therefore the communication will be great. That doesn't mean a very theatrical singer can't be great, in fact it's very possible to be very theatrical and still be very truthful and honest with what you're trying to communicate. So in other words, you must have at least a good basis of what singing actually is, not necessarily being incredible. BUT, I also believe the more you understand how to be a great singer in terms of skills in vocals, the more baggage you'll have to express yourself truthfully and honestly in an even greater way, therefore the more chances you'll have to make people even more amazed about your art and start seeing you as great singer. But I don't think this is an immutable rule, but also not an exception, I think this is what generally happens. Because when we have Bob Dylan, that means it's not always like that, because I don't think he has any impressive vocals skills, but he has a massive truthfulness and honesty to what he does, so I think the correct way to describe him, is not as an exception, but actually as a very lucky smart guy 😂 I mean, I've seen artists who has this vibe of not sounding like they're very vocally skilled, but at the same time they couldn't have this truth and honesty of Bob Dylan, so when I watch them it just feels kind of uncomfortable, like they're actually an emulation, a character of someone else. But there's a category that I really believe is not part of all this, which is when you sing for God. The purpose is different than the ones before. If before you wanted communicate your feelings with people, now you're literally communicating your feelings and thoughts to God first, and this for me, changes your music MASSIVELY in comparison to the other way. Not necessarily better music but surely a greater purpose. And here comes another thing: being truthful and honest this time means you're deeply trying to reach God's heart. That also changes the whole feeling of your music totally in my opinion when compared to music made to communicate feelings with other people. So this time you'll communicate feelings with other people as a consequence of communicating your feelings with God, and that's the truthfulness and honesty of you as a singer. That for me explains why you feel God's presence from this kind of music: 1st- The singer successfully connected to God. 2nd - You successfully connected to the singer's feelings. 3rd - you successfully opened yourself to believe what the singer is singing and feeling. 4th - both connected to God. 5th great singer. Beautiful, isn't it? With the one before is kinda like: 1st - The singer successfully transmitted his feelings through his or her music. 2nd - You successfully connected to the singer's feelings. 3rd - Great singer. Of course this is just my opinion, but since it makes sense for me I keep it.

Great summation Ken.To me,a great singer also has to be a great entertainer whether it be during songs or between songs.Also one whose live performances make younot want to hear the studio versions ever again.I'm biased but John Farnham fits this perfectly for 5 decades.Best storytelling singer for me is Billy Joel.

He's right, but I want to add more to what he said. Great singers are masters of interpretation, they make you feel something, and they can take any song and truly make it their own. Mariah Carey is one of my all time favorites! She embodies everything you could ever want in a great singer! She's certainly a GOAT(Greatest Of All Time).

In a world that is obessed with Range and agility I find myself more attracted to singer who sell the song. Mick jagger and Bob Dylan aren't really the guys who make you go wow I want to sign like that but they have sold millions of records one know for being a great lyricist and the other for being one of the great frontmen in rock history. I think the most important thing is to convey a message and the other is of course to be able to do it for a long time. I come back to mick again while many singers have blown own their voices over time mick is out there still sounding pretty good.

On the technical side, I actually a singer should scale how good they are by how similarly they use their voice the way Dimash does. I've truly never seen a singer with his genetic ability but more importantly ability to capture their gift and attempt (quite successfully) almost every style of vocals ever. truly incredible.

Great explanation. You don’t need a great technical voice. You need color, soul, tone, mood and delivery. A lot of singers who hit high notes and great range are boring on tv. Too vanilla too Mondane. Mick Jagger does not have a great technical voice he has great tone mood color and soul.

Bob Dylan. Not my favourite singer, but some of his songs are amazing. Adeles version of "Make You Feel My Love" is amazing. I've heard from many people that I can sing in tune. Which is you know cool. But I have for a long time been like not satisfied with my voice because it has limitations. I can't sing in the ranges I want to sing. But again. I can sing in ranges some other people can't. (Unless they practice, I guess). I am a Baritone or a Bass 1, I think. And it's fine when I sing songs with low octaves. However. Once I want to sing stuff where the singer is singing much higher, I can actually hit the notes but it's weak and sounds bad, so I usually lower it an octave down. I know this can be trained and all that. But at the same time as I want to be able to sing higher notes, I want to keep my low register.

Hi Ken, Cheers from Argentina, Im German and im a drummer. I have a question for you. Every instrument takes a part in a song, but for me is like the singer is the 80% of the band, because he´s telling or screaming the story, is the frontman or the voice in the band. So, the singer has to believe this for the good of the band?? What do you Think?
@kentamplin
@kentamplin 4 жыл бұрын
Most singers believe that and it irritates the other members. Behave as equals and you'll have fewer issues. I've known musicians that thought they were 99.9% of the band... Oh, and treat your roadies and support staff like THEY are the most important person in the band. Without them, imagine what you'd have to do yourself...

To me there's a lot of tricks singers use to help them sing like headvoice placement a lot of singers use but yea if a man can sing super high like tenors that's impressive or a man can sing super low that's impressive a lot of them use these tricks to help them sing like that but it ain't always about how high or how low to me if you have a good quality voice like Bing Crosby Eddie Arnold or Roy Rogers those guys sung great they didn't have to prove anything they just let out and sing without these crazy notes so yea if you have a great quality voice their good singers but I do like to see high and low notes but a smooth voice is great to Ken like Tennessee Ernie Ford he had a beautiful voice so that's what I think anyways Ken

Good topic Ken. I'm of the opinion that what makes a great vocalist also determines what makes a great band. Is the vocalist heard so that the message of the song is heard? Or, do the instrumentalists demand to be at the same volume level of the vocalist which ultimately deteriorates the dissemination of the message, especially for people that have selective hearing syndrome do to years of cranking up the volume. If you can't hear the vocalist, the vocalist is pointless. If you can't understand the vocalist, the vocalist is pointless. When the song comes with words, that message is the alpha part of the song. Now, if you can place some awesome instrumental licks between the verses and chorus of the song so that they add to, not take away from the message; you have some real enjoyable entertainment going on.
