What makes a Subaru, a Subaru?
Subaru is known for its distinctive features and characteristics. There are several things that make a Subaru, a Subaru:
Boxer Engine: Subaru uses a horizontally opposed engine design, also known as a boxer engine, which helps to lower the car's center of gravity and improve handling.
All-Wheel Drive: Subaru is known for its symmetrical all-wheel-drive system, which provides better traction and handling on all types of road surfaces.
Safety: Subaru is committed to safety and has earned numerous safety awards and accolades over the years. Subaru's EyeSight driver assist technology is a notable feature that helps to prevent accidents.
Reliability: Subaru vehicles are known for their durability and reliability, which is why they are often popular choices for outdoor enthusiasts and families.
Brand Identity: Subaru has a loyal following of fans who appreciate the brand's unique style, culture, and values, which include environmentalism and outdoor adventure. The brand has a distinct personality that resonates with many people.
Overall, Subaru's focus on all-wheel drive, boxer engines, safety, reliability, and brand identity are the key factors that make a Subaru, a Subaru

I Have owned and am still running a 2006 Forester xt turbo. The SUV that started it all.2,5 Turbocharged. O to 60 in 6,7 seconds and 175 kw of power. It now has 340,000 km on the clock with no major failures and has never once left me stranded on the road. Did replace the head gaskets at 250k ,one radiator, front wheel bearings just recently and a number of batteries through the years. For the rest only regular service items. I always service it exactly on time ,use the best quality premium lubricants and filters and clean and polish every season change. Car look and runs like new. What more can I say. Best car I ever had period...

Grill size is dependant on the engine size. Vehicles with bigger grills have them because they have bigger radiators, oil coolers, intercoolers, etc. That need good air flow.

Outstanding tutorial. A lot of these features I never even knew about, and unfortunately where I purchased my Forester and my mom‘s crosstrek these things were never shown to us. I’m sure you inform your customers of these things and that’s what distinguishes a mediocre sales person from a great sales person. What I really wish I had on both vehicles is the vehicle indicators on the side mirrors, had a loaner with that and they are crazy accurate. I wish I would have gotten xmode also. Keep up the great work, Alex

Purchased a new 2019 Ascent which now has 60k miles. The boxer engine as well as the "eyesight" program are top notch. My boxer engine is appx 274 hp, 4 cylinder turbo. I treat it very nicely yet if I need to merge or pass, the power is exceptional beginning as low as 2000 rpm! This means you have a ton of power in the low range if needed. Best attributes would be the exceptional ride quality and quiet cabin on the highway as well as the fit and finish. Everyone comments on how nice the Ascent feels on the road. The interior materials, around the dash, for example, are of a very good quality, not cheap plastic. Everything in the car feels like quality and it is. I only have one beef! The lighting system at night, with the rear gate open is extremely poor. There is just one small lite on the sidewall and this does nothing.

Hello, Subaru symmetrical AWD is literally symmetrical. Because of the layout and the somewhat rare inclusion of a longitudinal engine/transmission/driveshaft/and rear differential all running 'symmetrically' down the center of the vehicle. Equal length CV half shafts as well. I think it's unique as most non-exotic cars use a transverse engine/transmission layout. The Boxer is a packaging decision that allows for a low center of gravity. Lots of inline and V engines run just fine for decades but lowering the CG and always active AWD makes for a highly secure passive safety system in inclement weather or low traction situations. You could swerve to miss an obstacle and maintain control and composure. The entire ground up design consideration from Subaru is about control and safety. Pretty cool.

We've owned 5 Subarus, all great cars. Here in the upper midwest their AWD is great for our winter and spring driving conditions where you can get more of an off road experience than you may like without even leaving the highway ;) I've got a '15 Legacy with all the options. I do love the Eye-sight system. Like any automated system you still need to be observant and keep track of what's going on around you independent of the information you get from it. But it's a great additional layer safety.

That steel bar in the door frame also keeps the opposite doors in a side impact straight. When first responders get to an accident, they go to the opposite doors to get them open as quickly as possible in cars that don’t have that those doors bend and it’s harder to get them open costing valuable time, Subaru engineering is elite in the area of safety.

I'll argue that the lack of pistons fighting gravity is a minimally noticeable benefit in modern engines, but agree with the rest of your points for the most part. I especially agree with the blind spots. Whenever I get in my wife's accent, it feels like I'm driving a windowless brick in comparison. Also as to your point about the lower center of gravity, I feel like you left out mentioning how much this matters despite the overall size of the vehicle otherwise because of just how much of the total vehicle weight is tied up in the engine alone, not to mention the transmission which is also brought low down to connect to the engine's drive shaft.

A;ex: I have noticed the competition used the trunk volume i a specific way - below the trunk cover. Since Forester has great visibility, the trunk cover is relatively low and the rear window is big. So the trunk volume is misleading. When packed to the roof, Forester has great usability. Actually, trunk usability is very important for me and one of the big upsides of owning a Forester.

Not mentioned in this video, but my saleman told me that the low profile engines are designed to go under the vehicle in a headon collision instead of into the cabin. My vehicle has so many safety features, it's almost impossible to have a severe accident. I bought my vehicle because the Forester was rated one of the safest vehicles on the road according to Consumer Reports. If only Subaru would ditch putting CVTs into all there cars.. they would be perfect

Subaru is quickly becoming the most popular brand in North America. They make great vehicles. Just bought a 2023 Outback, Touring XT. Absolutely love it. High quality interior, comfortable, fully loaded, great practicality, drives like a car, has plenty of power, the tech console works flawlessly. A nice and useful feature is the roof rails have built in fold out crossbars. Frankly, I think it’s nicer in some ways than my 2018 BMW X3.

Subaru is the best vehicle on the road in my opinion. Safest and also cheap to insure.

I'm curious, why don't all 2023's get the 3rd eye? Why is it exclusive to only some trims?

Only thing I don't like about a Subaru is the CVT, and yes, I have a forester as well.

what the heck?! is that a Tokyo Roki oil filter I see at 2:00?! why does a base model forester have the best oil filter and my outback limited has the garbage USA made blue filter? :(

Not sure! My guess is because the Forester is produced in Japan and the Outback is produced in the US?

I wish the Eye Sight cameras on my '23 Crosstrek Limited were mounted flush to the windshield, their placement makes cleaning the interior surface a pain.

That’s odd they should be. At least they are on my 2016 Outback limited and 2014 Forester Touring. I had to pay extra for both as they weren’t standard then.

Weird, I didn’t hear anything about the relationship head gaskets have with boxer engines.

Waiting for my manual Crosstrek to arrive for April delivery. I just wish the Eyesight had been available. The CVT may be adequate for some operators, but I found it damningly unpleasant during the test drive.

I love a manual transmission, however, like you mentioned, Subaru stupidly makes you sacrifice features to get it.
