I had a loaded Jeep Wrangler Willy's that I thought was good in the snow. I took my Wife's Subaru Forester to fill up with gas during a snowstorm, and was dissapointed at how much better it was than my Jeep in the snow and it didn't require pulling up that stupid 4WD lever. Within a week I traded it for a new Forester and also got a $5,000 check back from the dealer, no regrets. The Forester gets almost double the gas mileage of the Wrangler and has much better brakes.

I bought a '21 Subaru Crosstrek last year, but mine is a trim level lower which means the smaller 2.0 boxer. But it has the 6-speed manual, and as long as you keep the RPMs above 2K it's not so bad in the acceleration department. Plus I got 34MPG on a road trip from Massachusetts to Colorado and back. Even drove up Pike's Peak and through lots of other mountains. I like the fact it's basically a lifted hatchback instead of something trying to look like a truck.

Subaru is still fully independent, but they have a partnership with Toyota, so share on a few things. Toyota owns a large stake (but not majority) in Subaru, and Subaru owns a stake in Toyota (a smaller % given how large Toyota is). This partnership has seen the BRZ/86 as a joint project (but Subaru did almost all of it). And it has also seen the Solterra as another joint project (but Toyota did almost all of it). Subaru also manufactured Camry's. And there is probably other things I'm missing. Anyhow, this connection has benefited them, I'm sure. But Subaru has also been very well managed in recent years. Subaru actually is one of the few small car companies that still has independence (operates independently) and that has been rather successful in recent times (and maintained its position). Most of the other small independent car companies (in Subaru's cohort / timeline of companies) have basically been fully bought out over the past 10-20 years, or have been in decline versus new rising competition etc. Subaru is an interesting company since they're small but have advanced manufacturing capability. They even manufacture Boeing AH-64 Apache attack helicopters for the Japanese military, and parts for commercial airliners etc.

Lol great memories, I remember working on those 85 to 87 Subarus with the dual timing belts. I knew a machinist friend who made me a special with a socket adapter to place in the timing sprockets. I also used a spring tool, to adjust the belt tension to specs. I had a couple of crackheads, I was able to find an automotive store that sent them out to a special truck shop that repaired them. The customers were so suprised that their cylinder heads could be repaired. I never ever had a come back, or complaint. They really are good cars, especially the manual ones. Good pickup, excellent gas mileage, those cars would go through snow unbelievable easy.

I spent over a month looking for the right car. By the end I was exhausted and figured I’d never find the car for me for the price I was looking for (under 30 grand). I wanted a leather wrapped steering wheel, “leather” seats, a sporty feel, all the new driver aids, good gas mileage, over 8” of ground clearance, a cargo space big enough to sleep in, AWD, and a nice interior. The RAV4 was too expensive for what it was. The CRV was also out of my price range. The Mazda cx50 is nice but MPG was meh and it was a new car, and not made in Japan. The cx 30 was tiny. I was about to give up until I found this. WOW! Thank god I didn’t give up. This car literally fits all my needs. What an amazing machine’

head gaskets can still fail if there’s either a defective head gasket or incorrect maintenance but the head gasket is no longer prone to fail. FA series engines are fairly solid if you leave them stock. EJ across the board is more likely to fail but it’s not as common as they used to be. I had a 2011 Outback with just under 200k miles, had no head gasket issues since I was using the proprietary coolant additive.

It's a very interesting phenomenon but yes as far as SUVs go I would agree with you the RAV4 is indeed King. :)(*Note I bought this rev for off the used lot of my local Ford, dealership*) and the salesman who helped me buy it who was also a long-time friend of my family told me that as far as vehicles in my price range and the best vehicle they could offer me at that point was the RAV4 that they just happened to have in their used lot. @@donniee.2238 Other funny thing about my purchase is not only did I get my RAV4 from the Ford dealership I've been loyally doing business with for years I'm kind of on the opposite end of this odd Ford phenomenon where the previous owners of my RAV4 of which there was only one previous owner traded it in for a Ford Maverick now if I am following automotive news correctly that has been a rather strange phenomenon that has been going on throughout 2022. And also as I understand it Toyota is supposedly planning to come out with its own compact pickup again or perhaps there's even been discussion I hear of bringing back the Toyota Stout in order to both save RAV4 sales and to simultaneously compete with the Maverick cuz as I understand it if I read things correctly the Maverick has become a huge threat to the RAV4. I find it all very fascinating, particularly as a Ford customer who just recently got a used Toyota RAV4 and now I'm finding that I absolutely love the experience I'm having with this vehicle it's a very very unique experience. :)

I hate SUVs, but I love the Crosstrek because it isn't really an SUV at all- it's just an Impreza hatch with a lifted subframe and more ground clearance. My mother needed a new car and was dead set on getting an SUV, I suggested the 2.5L crosstrek and she loves it. I don't have to worry about her rolling over on the freeway, either. I was initially skeptical about the CVT, but I've heard very good things about Subaru CVTs compared to other brands (mainly because they've been doing them for so long.) I test drove it when I was at the dealership with her and it's suprisingly good- the paddle shift control operates much quicker than a traditional automatic, and the way it will automatically step to different rev bands depending on throttle application was nice. It's also unbelievable in the snow. I intentionally tried to get it stuck in a snow bank to test the stability control, and I literally couldn't. I really wish they'd give up the 2.5L engine and give us a 1.6T or 2.0T that the Japanese Subarus have, though. The FB seems to be better than the EJ but I don't trust it. 2.5L in four cylinders will just never be a good idea for a normal car engine.

Finally when it was out of warranty it backfired and blew out my catalytic converter. Then their mechanic told me it was backfiring because the (he called it) anti-backfire valve was clogged. He replaced the converter and the valve and no more backfire. They said it was out of warranty so I had to pay the whole amount. I even went up the chain in the corporation and sent proof of my reports. They said too bad so sad you lose. I will never buy one again.

The newer Subaru's are excellent vehicles, especially the ones with the CVT transmission. They are way better than the newer Nissan's with the CVT transmission.

We own two 2018 Crosstreks. One CVT one manual. Both trouble free even when one of them is driven 25k/yr. I ordered an outback wilderness coming in next month for the bigger cargo and snappier 2.4t. Have to say they way they tuned that CVT should be done with all of them. No longer felt like a rubber band.

I've strongly considered buying a Subaru, but I've been hesitant because they use CVT. But, since you speak highly of the Subaru CVT, maybe I should be confident that buying one is a good decision.

My Subaru ascent is stiff intially, until I lifted it by 1.7inch with springs and install offroad tires. It rides very smooth even at 45mph on unpaved road.

We just bought a 2010 Forester with the EJ253 and a 4EAT transmission. Did the fluids, ignition system, and timing belt the first month we had it. With the SOHC motor, the timing belt was a very easy job. The more I drive this thing, the more I like it. Stupid simple car to work on, and it drives halfway decent.

I have a 2015 Crosstrek. Took it 50 miles uphill in the snow to work every day and back down 50 miles. Never had an issue out of it. I think my year had a 2.1l and I wouldn’t mind a 2.4l

Wait, what?! Last tine I watched one of Scotty’s videos (maybe 2-3 years ago), he was a total Toyota fanboy and he hated Subies. Now the show is on the other foot. For the record, I bought my 2018 Impreza new and have zero regrets. No issues whatsoever, other than replacing stuff. Acceleration is no problem. Plan to drive it until the wheels fall off.

I can say this, modern Subarus are actually quite reliable and, imo, damn great cars. They AWD, comfortable, practical, accelerates quite well, and are stylish (imo). I find doing maintenance on them quite easy, although the protective cover under the engine is quite tedious to get off to change the transmission fluid and changing spark plugs are tedious too, I could see myself owning one. Just as an all-arounder, like many people that come in does. Also, it's the car that comes in the least for work that I see working in a dealer with 4 brands, with Citroën being the most. Oh, always being in a modern Subaru, compared to the other modern cars that I've worked on, it feels great and much more luxorious than other brands.

I have a 2020 Forester touring, love it, and also after looking into the exhaust system, I found out it's 304 stainless steel made by Borla , and it has a million mile warranty on it. Just a little FYI to inform and let people know they shouldn't incur that expense. Great vehicle 52000 miles now ,bought it new, and all I've done is periodic maintenance as scheduled...oil changes, tire rotation, fluid changes, and put some gas in and go. So far, so good. I never owned a Subaru before, but IF I buy a new vehicle, I'll check Subaru first.
