As a kid, I loved Far Cry 3... but as young as I was, I just took it for face value. I was just a dude named Jason, I killed people. Sick, new guns. I never stopped to think- is this what Jason deserves to become? I have a whole new outlook on all of the far cry games as a whole. I was old enough for Far Cry 4 to hit philosophically, but I never got into 5. Now, im more excited than ever to play through 3 and 4 again, and the new experiences that 5 and 6 will bring. Thank you for showing me that these games are much more than I what I took them for. Amazing video man.

I absolutely love Pagan's character as a whole and how the more we learn about kyrat and their golden paths leaders the more we realize how they're pretty much on the same level of craziness. Pagan knew he was being a hypocrite by using Ajay's mom and sister murder as an excuse to be ruthless against Kyritians but he knew that the country was going nowhere with or without him. I would have paid another 40$ if the game would let join him in the royal army and destroy all of the golden path. For me, the crab ragoon ending is the Canon one cause let's be honest, if you were in the middle of nowhere and the dictator tells you to wait you'll wait in place

I hope Ubisoft would consider fleshing out the protagonist again past after Far Cry 6. Having good villains is surely Far Cry's strength, but having a well-written opposing force of that villain provides a good insight and believable contradiction in ideas. Even if in the end the protagonist ends up being wrong or converted to the villain's side, it would make it more dramatic and narratively satisfying when the ending/twist hits.

The opening choice of Far Cry 4 is both one of the best things about it and one of my main problems when it comes to wanting to play it. Pagan is evil, but Sabal and Amita are both at least equally nuts, so ultimately the best ending in the entire game is achieved by not playing it at all and just letting Pagan hand over Kyrat to Ajay.
@isdrakon9802
@isdrakon9802 2 жыл бұрын
Frankly the best ending would be to side with Amita while silently undercutting her authority. Think of all the things Ajay accomplishes in the short time he joins the fight. At the head of the game the golden path is nearly wiped out with no more bases left. Ajay stops that, we then spend the game taking outposts rescuing hostages, and overall carrying the civil war on our back. We turn a nearly lost war into a victory. Realistically we would be more liked by both the people and the soldiers of the golden path than Amita or sabal. From their we play the hero, having killed Anita and sabal and taking the country from pagan. Heck even better, let it be an inside job

Not only because Montana is just Northeast of South Dakota aka where I’m from, but the saga of Joseph Seed and his family will always be one of the most insane storylines ever. And from a visual perspective, might I add how the Far Cry villains dress. From Vaas to Anton, not a single one of them look or dress "normal". Well of course, they're villains but still. You'd think that maybe at some point we'd get a normal enough looking guy but the Far Cry villains always put a unique spin on whatever fashion trend they at first appear to be in to. Often in an overstated manner and they express who they are personally which often clashes with what they are externally, making them "not look the part" for what they are supposed to be. Vaas appears to be the most practical dresser. He's a pirate so don't expect a three-piece suit. His red shirt stands out making him easily recognizable among a group of people and intimidating (psychological effect of red). He's got rough, stubbly facial hair adding to his sloppy aesthetic but a mohawk that works for him. You'll notice how it's actually shaved back a little, making his hairline appear higher. Then, there are his armbands, wrist bands, all sorts of bands and necklaces that show a strange mix between his tribal and pirate forms of dress. He may look like a pirate... but not quite the part. Pagan just screams pompousness. He exudes an air of sophistication with his choice of luxury wear. With leather shoes and a bright, loud ensemble, his appearance commands attention. However, like Vaas' splicing of tribal and gangster aesthetics, Pagan Min combines everything and it often does not match very well. His voice and hair color don't match his face which is obviously not Caucasian. His jacket doesn't match his pants. It looks like a suit from afar but trust me, it is NOT. His jacket appears ever so slightly lighter and shinier. Probably silk or satin and has a contrasting gold floral print. His trousers appear darker and duller and lack the gold floral print. My favorite part of his ensemble are his buttons. Instead of the common button and hole design that Western tailoring has, his jacket is closed by two pankou knots or "frogs". They are commonly seen on traditional Chinese robes. These knots are also found on his cuffs where two to four smaller buttons are usually expected. So he looks both Oriental and Western at the same time. He may look like a crime boss... but not quite the part. Joseph can appear to be many things but a preacher is definitely not one of them. The element of combination is with him as well. He combines the sophisticated "holy" aesthetic with the rough and tumble Montana cowboy swagger. He is often seen topless with warm yellow aviators. You can see his black jeans with a holstered pistol and his glorious beard and man bun. In this state, he looks more like a rock star than the leader of Eden's Gate. With clothes on, he is seen wearing a quilted zipper vest with ornamental leather pads on his shoulders. It is then embroidered with his crown insignia on his left and right chest. This very casual vest is worn over a formal preacher shirt with a clerical collar, again a splice. When in full attire as seen in the intro of the game, Joseph wears a jacket. This jacket is Western enough. No fancy frogs or bright pink fabric. It seems to be like any normal preacher jacket albeit embroidered again with his crown and shoulder insignias. It is a formal jacket that matches his formal shirt but then conflicts once more with his trousers which are JEANS. A normal preacher would once again be wearing a suit. Joseph wears an odd jacket with black jeans which are fastened by a big-ass title belt with a buckle that screams out for attention. He may be a preacher... but he sure as sh*t doesn't look the part. Then there's Anton Castillo. I haven't played this game yet but from the gameplay and trailers I've seen. No. Just no. My puny brain can't begin to comprehend what that diagonal seam running from his neck to his bicep is about. It still has a vertical armhole so it's... an armscye and a raglan shoulder at the same time. He's wearing casual, that's one thing. It's light. It's bright. It's white. It's got double rows of stitching everywhere that reinforce the seams so it can be worn outside and can survive harsh weather. It's a military style uniform after all complete with patch pocket with flaps, much like those seen on WW2 uniforms and even the ones today. He's got an atrocious collar gap that makes me wonder if his tailor is still alive and he's the kind of psychopath that wears a red tie with a red shirt. Gotta respect his Eldridge knot tie though. I can't for the love of God do that tie knot. The conflict remains. Is it a raglan sleeve or an armscye sleeve? He's like what? 65? but he dresses like Pewdiepie during his wedding to Marzia, black shirt-black tie. He may be a dictator but he doesn't look the part. I rest my case. Thank you for reading this far if you have. Not saying they look bad. Pagan Min actually looks pretty good and I totally appreciate the idea of wearing a western style coat but with Oriental button loops.

Great video man. Really. You put a lot of thought in it. I was just wondering why you left the "bad guy" from Far Cry 2 out: The Jackal. While playing Far Cry 2 way back when, I thought halfway through the game: "If this game gives me the choice to let him live or not..." a Jackal tape made me decide I would let him live if I have the choice. (The one with the kid stealing boots). I figured, if he worries abiut kids, than he can't be a rotten evil man. I really liked the story of the magical Far Cry 3. Rescuing your friends. An unforgettable journey. I really like the beginning of Far Cry 4 when you start steering your character. Alone, armed with just a knife, dealing with the search party coming for you... Love the American setting in Montana, Far Cry 5. Enjoyed rescuing roadside hostages. I genuinely enjoyed New Dawn that plays 17 years after Far Cry 5. Even after beating the game you never run out of bad guys. Fun fact: Far Cry 4 still has the best weapons roster to date.

Imo Far cry 5 has the best story and message ,at the end like the video said it leaves you feeling hollow and thinking if all the decisions you made were the right ones then you think back about all the people that you could have saved and all the places you needlessly destroyed just because you thought it was right at the time. At the end your really questioning who is the real bad guy? So many people would have lived if you'd just have done nothing.

In 5, YOU are the protagonist. This why the Deputy has no personality and is fully customizable, they are supposed to be you and you fill the character with your personality. When Joseph and the other villains monologue, they’re doing it directly to you as opposed to a traditional, somewhat generic protagonist that FC games typically have. The silent protag was likely opted for a more immersive experience, and the game handled it fairly well.

Very underrated video that deserves far more attention, I thoroughly enjoyed the analysis and will definitely be looking forward to your deep-dive on FC6's Presidente, Moff Fring! It's fascinating that these experimental narratives tied to gameplay, while not wholly unique conceptually, are nonetheless interesting despite the lambasting levied against how long running its tropes have been. Truth be told, I've never played the Far Cry series myself, but I'm definitely aware of the culture surrounding the franchise, good or bad. Despite this video selling me on the premise, I wish I'd played the games when I was younger and had time, especially because it'd have grown on me as I'd gotten older. Nowadays, I tend to lean on listening to another's *"positive"* analysis for gaming generally, not simply because people like you know how to make a smart and tightly written yet entertaining essay mind you. It's likely I'll have a far cry chance to try Far Cry in the near future, but it'd definitely like to form my own thoughts eventually on these games individually. I'm no fan nor critic, but I'd definitely agree that this series is far and above unique in its approach to narratives in gaming, and its _"Villains"_ especially in star roles that juxtapose the player themselves rather than just a standard protagonist we embody.

I liked FarCry 3 because the story and characters created this mindset where I felt as if I was actually slipping into this new world. Playing as Jason, I set out to save my friends and avenge my brother, but as I steadily fell deeper into the new life I was forced to re-evaluate my goals and desires. Jason takes on the needs of the group to escape the hell they parachuted into, and by so doing slowly becomes alienated from his friends and loved ones. It creates almost two lives in one person. At some point either the warrior, beast like mentality must take over or let the pleas of help from his friends guide him away from the insanity. I'm not sure if the gameplay was intended to reinforce this mentality, but as I cleared outposts and slaughtered every pirate I came across with brutal efficiency I began to realize how much I wanted a harder challenge. I wanted to confront Vaas and his men where in the beginning I would freeze in terror at the very thought before finding the nearest exit. Plus the way Jason physically changes with the tattoos perfectly represents how permanent the change is becoming. So by the end when I was given the option to stay and become someone totally different and kill my friends OR escape the insanity and save my friends, it was a difficult choice that spurred much debate within me. I obviously saved the game and expereinced both endings because I'm a true gamer like that but I know deep down I didn't like what I had become. In a way I wanted to kill my past and escape the monster that was taking control. This whole game brought so much character conflict to the player and that's why I love it. FarCry 3 will always be my favorite.

Joseph Seed isn't very likable to me. He is written to make me want him to see his comeuppance, just like his siblings (Faith isn't too bad, since she's just an ex-drug addict who got brainwashed by the Seeds.) I would love to tear down his entire cult and liberate Hope County, and that makes the endings that much more unsatisfying.
@Former_Halo_Fan
@Former_Halo_Fan 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah. The game does absolutely nothing to make any members of the cult seem redeemable or sympathetic. Even Faith's story loses most of its weight when you're repeatedly told to never trust anything she says. Then the game tries to tell you that you're the bad person for killing them. Far Cry 4's "the best thing to do was walk away" narrative worked because Pagan Min never pretends to be a good guy, and there were hints from the beginning that Amita and Sabal really weren't the best leaders, so their sudden "turn" in the epilogue is a natural conclusion of their arc. But in Far Cry 5, the game does everything it can to present the Cult as being crazy, and even if you do find the secret hints of imminent nuclear war, that still doesn't justify the mass-brainwashing or torture the Cult engages in. Also most of the people you ally with are actually good people. Far Cry 4 is saying that: "Hey maybe taking sides in a conflict without truly understanding the perspective of both sides or what they're fighting over is a bad idea." Far Cry 5 is saying that: "Hey even if someone is committing objectively evil actions under reasoning that sounds like complete nonsense, you shouldn't try to stop them because what if by some miracle it turns out there actually is a reason?"

Kind of unrelated but I really like far cry 5's Soundtrack and I guess I imprinted on it on an emotional level. When I played FC5 for the first time, my elder dog was going through many seizures, it was a rough, sleepless week and the only times we were both calm was when I left the main menu screen just to listen to Dan Romer's music. I remember stroking my boy's hair and hugging him as tight as I could while I could listen to the soft violin and banjo. Thankfully I get to finish this small story with a happy ending because I can assure you that my boy is still with me to this very day, even years after that incident :) he'll turn 14 years soon.

12:40 I'd argue devolving, not evolving. Similar to the first reference of Alice in Wonderland, it's an appearance of beauty and wonder, then as you get deeper you realize the horrors that await. Jason devolves from a human into a beast, basically; primal instinct. At the end you can choose to keep the collar on and die as the beast you are, or break free of it and try to return to civilization. And when he fights Vaas, he is at a crossroads between being Primal and going towards Civilization (his old self). He, for a short time, takes Vaas' mantle, and descends further into madness. Only when in front of his old life (his girlfriend, friends) and making the final choice, does he decide whether to stay in Wonderland. Or escape the Madness. 15:50 Something I just thought of, thinking on how Vaas/Citra/Jason all intertwine. Vaas obviously went down the rabbit hole towards madness, he probably made the choice of Citra over whatever friends he had. Then ended up regretting that choice and left Citra, couldn't kill her because, in a way, he still loves her. He doesn't "want" her anymore, if that makes sense, but no one else can have her either, possessive. And I think that is one angle of the "definition of insanity", trying to win Citra's favor, when "Vaas already has it" sort of thing, among other things. Vaas also opens up to Jason, because they're too sides of the same coin. The overarching story is one of my favorites for Farcry 3, and fits perfectly with the Jackals' quote from Farcry 2. "A living being seeks above all to discharge its strength. Life itself is will to power. Nothing else matters." Which is why Farcry 2 is my favorite Farcry game, with 3 being behind it for overarching story.

Saddest thing about Far cry 5 ending is that , the whole game you feel like you are saving the county and people in it . But you are actually dooming them even more . Joseph was right and the collapse ( nuclear war ) was coming , as hinted in the radio throughout the game . By killing the members of the family , destroying their supplies and most importantly - blowing up their bunkers , you doom more people them eden's gate ever would . I felt like shit after the ending . Truly somethimes the best thing to do , is to walk away .

I find Joseph Seed the most compelling antagonist. Not just of Far Cry, but games in general. Not because I think he is a good guy, but because he is going through a test of faith. Joseph really does want to save the people. He views his evil acts as a regrettable yet necessary condition of doing so. He stops John from drowning the Deputy - his enemy - because his faith required the question of who would save Humboldt county to play out. He was leaving the question to God. In other words, if God’s plan was to use him as a means of getting the Deputy to step up to save the people, then so be it. His evil actions were done because they had to be done, not because Joseph desired it. It is a remarkable story, because the temptation is always to make antagonists evil for their own gain. It is more exciting when they are evil for the right reasons.

Pagan Min was an the villain, but he was the antagonist. He started as "anti-villain" during the bus stop scene. But in the secret end scene, he became the "mentor" of sorts. But after your escape, he becomes villainous but not full villain. And in the final scene, you either kill him (boring) and end his chapter as the villain you never learn his motive or if you let him you understood that he was the antagonist pushing you around because that's what you allowed him to do. And then there's me who killed him after learning the truth and scattered the ash.
