What Makes For A Good Sand Spike Rod Holder?

Understanding The Positives & Negatives Of Sand Spikes!
I've been asked by many surf casters abroad what i look for in a sand spike & where to locate a decent sand spike. Most countries rely on cut long sections of PVC tubing. Those are ok for most smaller species. In Florida from Melbourne to Pompano that's the main type of sand spike. I also saw my bud loosing his expensive rig off Pompano using that set-up. So i sent him 3 Hawaiian 1/4in aluminum sand spikes & he loved them!
I'm going to show you what i use & what i wouldn't even touch. Experience of 45yrs of fishing around the World has taught me a lot. I'm sure they're better rigging set-ups out there, i'd love to hear about them. To this day i never lost a rig. Never.
The "V" of the angled heavy duty aluminum i face towards the ocean when inserting the sand spike (you don't have to, personal preference). And the angle of the tilt should be downwards 10°-15° offset towards the ocean from straight up (90°).

If i may, having 2 sizes would be great. One that fits into utility wagons & a longer one for loose & compact sand. Look at the ones at Brian's Fishing Supply. The welder "burrs" the edges so it's rounded smooth, won't damage the rod's butt. I only use this type as i don't want my rods "ringed". If you want to make the ultimate sand spike incorporate these 2 features. Plus put a hole on top for the bell to dangle. If you do all 3 features you'll have a winner! I'll even do a video review on it if you do.

Thanks, Uncle . This whole rock-spike talk unknown to me, I'm not sure what you're doing with that gnarly piece of steel. I am finishing up a two-rod holder designed to work along lakesides and river beds. Here in the California Bay Area it's rare to find ground that will readily accept a good set pole-holder. The sandy beach makes rooting a rod a simple task. Im new to surf fishing and the easiest thing about it is setting the rod firm in the terra. This two-rod holder that I'm rounding out was imagined by me to work along rivers and, ponds and reservoirs, but I'm more interested in making a two-rod sandspike out of it because my design is all PVC with the exception of a 3/16" steel rod. My design will work great if im fishing from a nice manicured lawn. Due to the nature of the Earth and the nature of a rod holder I am constantly faced with the knowledge that my rod holder will rarely grab enough to hold my rods... Your last example is the best of 250,000 years of human evolution. A portion of tube firmy mated to a length of angle stock fits to create a solid connection between Earth and fishing pole. The only issue lies in its rigid, inline design which limits the terrain where it cam be usefull.. By designing my own two-rod holder I have learned that I need to design another ten. No one rod holder will work everywhere that I need a holder to hold rod. It is for this reason that my rods (which will remain unnamed) require vast armies of every conceivable kind and perversion in order that my rods may be held. I put 1 wrap above the reel, 1 wrap below & draw it tight. If there's no large rocks or thick shrubs around for the other end tie it around a rock. What i do for open sand flats is clip it to a bucket filled w/water or sand.
