There are as many answers to this question as there are kilt lovers. But maybe it comes down to four words - Heritage, Looks, Confidence, Freedom.
The kilt is unique in the world as garment that both represents a culture and history but also an attitude. Kilts put us in touch with the past and inspire us to make our lives in the present really great.

Here's my take: kilts are unique in that it simultaneously ties you with a group (clan, nationality, etc) while paradoxically communicates your strong individualism.

That's an interesting take. It's a way of showing both conformity and non-conformity at the same time.

Because I like it and want to. That’s it. No more explanation needed.

I started my leap into the kilt world because of the Boy Scout Program. I wanted to spread the word about the history of the McLaren name and it's roll in the program. I was fitted with a McLaren kilt an wore it with my BSA shirt. This often (as I hoped it would) started a conversation that I was more that happy to enter into. To spice up the "Look" I purchased a sporran that is a Fox head. As it served yet another purpose. I am a FOX in Woodbadge and it was a perfect addition. There are many scouters now wearing the tartan and I am happy to see that. I attended several National Jamborees and participated in a re-inactment of the very first (1907) experimental camp and played the part of Kenneth McLaren who was the Adjutant to Baden Powel. We had several of our staff in kilts when we were not in costume. We would travel around the Jamboree and spread the work. This to me is what makes kilts unique.

For me wearing a kilt shows my masculinity, my pride in heritage, my confidence, that I can be comfortable, that I am an individual, that I am friendly and approachable. Women have been more attracted to me. I now have a loving girlfriend.

I like kilts for the comfort and the originality. As you have said, not everyone is wearing a kilt everyday.

I really appreciate how kilts help me feel a connection to my past and to my family. I don't like near any family and I never got to know my grandparents on my Mom's side (the Scottish side). When I wear my kilt I feel connected to them in some way. Beyond that, they're just so comfortable. I really enjoy wearing the belted plaid in particular because it's old school and I've always appreciated old school ways of doing things. It says something about an appreciation for history, culture, and family that nothing else can.

It has been a jorney. Learning the pipes and discovering my family heritage. Then something clicked. Its like I found this missing part of me in the Kilt. Everyone called me crazy and teased me at first because it was strange and new. We knew we were Irish and Scottish to some level but no one ever took it beyond that. Then with playing and sharing the families story and history slowly everyone began to accept my crazy decision. Comming up to a year now of being a serial kilter and its just another day in a kilt. No one questions it and can always spot me in a crowd. Is it rebelling? Sure I have always been the one to try to be different and you really cannot tell me what to do or think. Pride in heritage? Yes not only in family but my kilt is often paired with my veteran shirts, ect so pride on my past is a given. Keeping a tradition alive? Yes as well. Nothing is more Scottish or Celtic than a kilt and it always brings a sharing of stories when people ask about it. It just seems to speak to me on a different level and feels like it has always been a part of me I didnt know I was missing.

For me it’s been about reconnecting to family roots, especially because my family has all passed on except son, and a few cousins. But it doesn’t hurt that I’ve gotten so many compliments when wearing it & almost no razzing. I’m in Greater Seattle, WA area where Utilikilts have been prominent but also hit point of not standing out much. Whereas an actual kilt DOES stand out by virtue of NOT being Utilikilt. I also have to say that wearing even 5 yd wool kilt and Merino wool hose, being on dance floor didn’t overheat or build sweat in hose, but kept me quite warm when outside during 28-32 degree temps. :)

Pretty much the same reasons you already covered. Plus, perhaps, this ”warrior” feeling Erik has mentioned. It just makes me feel like ”me”. I was very interested in everything Scottish ( Gaelic, Piping, Highland and Country dancing and ofcourse kilts and clothing ) decades before i knew i had ancestry. Kilts and tartan have been an interest of mine since the 80’s, years before i owned my first kilt.

I wear a kilt because I like them, they're comfortable, and I've never given a 💩 what anyone else thinks about me, my interests, or my clothes.

Ever since I found out that I got a Scottish Welch in English. The kilts came in to play early. Enjoy wearing the one I have. One of my kids don't think it's appropriate. He says it's a dirt, but then what does he know anyways? I really enjoy it and you guys bring a lot alike too. Thank you.

It is fun to wear a kilt. I also participate in the Highland Games. It is a part of who I am. It is a good Ice Breaker and gets people talking. I have had a lot of positive feedback for wearing my kilt. To the point that I have become known as the "Kilt Guy" in my area.

you forgot one of the most important and unique parts if a kilt: because it's an unbifurcated garment worn without undergarments, it keeps it cool "down there" aside from that, the reason I wear my kilt is because I am eccentric and enjoy formalwear, so having formalwear that stands out even among other formalwear is nice.

in the past it was one of the only acceptable alternative to pants for men in western culture, though today society is beginning to get over the idea that men can't wear skirts but the kilt is the only formal option.

I wear kilts 1) I'm a maverick 2) Scots have been--still are--mavericks 3) my genealogy is Scottish 4) I can afford to indulge my fantasies.

+USAKiltsOfficial *Thanks for the historian perspective.* Kilts are nominally unisex, but historically favored by Scots' men; and the _Sporran_ is convenient for men as light storage.
