I legit thought I was hearing the narrator from outlaw Star 😱 man you really nailed why this show stuck with me for so long. It’s far from perfect sure but the places it allowed my imagination to go was undeniable. Thank you for doing this review

Hey, just found your channel today. I really appreciate your point of view on shows that I love. I do hope you make more videos in the future (if that’s what you want to do of course). You have a relaxing voice, good editing, and nice delivery. Really appreciate the videos.

This gave me chills. Anime really was different back then. These days anime lacks that emotinal connection. It's all about shinny fight scenes and cool power ups.

I had the exact same experience with this show as you. The arc of Gene living on a backwater planet, conquering his fear by blasting off into space, and encountering all these wild places and people, was extremely impactful as a kid with a risk-averse family. I'm very happy with where my life is now, and I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that OLS provided the initial bump that set me on that course

I’ve been playing Starfield since it came out and I can assure you the FIRST thing I did was customize my ship to look like the XGP! 🤩 This show was definitely seminal to my childhood, and having recently rewatched it I can say it was a show that was vastly superior then the sum of its parts. My surname in every RPG has been Starwind ever since, and I have a particular affinity for pistols and running around the galaxy with my badass space ship doing odd jobs while adventuring 🥰

The grappler arms actually make sense if you listen to the background story behind them. It started due to service ships being converted to space pirate ships using grappler arms to anchor to victim vessels. Also, not everyone can afford infinite missiles and anti-missiles, so close encounters would be more ideal for lower budget space pirates or outlaws. Just like any trend, it evolved from simple uses into more complex combat uses. It’s actually told by the narrator!!!
@chillreview636 Жыл бұрын
Always nice to learn some new OLS lore. They still look ridiculous, and the fact they actually fight with them is still REALLY ridiculous to me 😂, but they do add an an interesting wrinkle to the whole spaceship battle aesthetic.... So I can dig it. Thanks for the comment
@TRYCLOPS1 Жыл бұрын
@@chillreview636 that fight with that green pirate grappler ship was epic! It’s the fight in the beginning of the story. It’s not until by almost the last section of the storyline that that encounter happens when you see the destroyed ship they just took down. The story was incredibly well narrated also.
@TRYCLOPS1 Жыл бұрын
@@chillreview636 At first you find it super weird and odd. But further in the story you understand what it really means to become a “grappler”. You understand why that term comes with a lot of admiration but also fear from everyone in that world! It’s not easy to win a grappler battle! It’s some advanced space combat with some super tough spaceships and crazy strategies and flashing reflexes and mechanical control.

I love it too, but I think it can be a lil corny here and there lol. I also don't think it's as consistently good as similar anime like Cowboy Bebop and Trigun. It's definitely a classic though.

If you go into Outlaw Star tallying the negatives you're going to think it's "objectively" bad. Everything's always off model with 90s longness, voice acting is a bit hokey and changes the inflection of a lot of lines from Japanese, and often the plot sort of spins its wheels. Despite all that though, there's so much more to its universe that excites the imagination. Its use of lighting to instill mood and atmosphere is on par with scifi classics such as Bladerunner. Its setting was completely unique (until joss whedon ripped it off wholesale for firefly) with a seamless blending of magic, technology, and Chinese aesthetics that still hasn't been topped by other space faring series. Sure Cowboy Bebop is amazing in its depiction of a humanity that struggled to get into space, a strength for sure but it feels familiar as it stands upon the shoulders of alien and 2001 a space odyssey. Outlaw star is like going into a bazaar on an alien world, strange, fantastical, and cool as hell (I mean wrestling ships and guns that shoot compressed magic are just plain badass). Sure it kinda smells, and the products can be a bit shoddy, but that experience is something you're not going to get anywhere else. It's a lot like this video. It's about feelings in the moment and reflecting on how it made you feel in the past. You can dissect it, but you'll be left with a lot of parts that don't accurately reflect the presentation on the whole. Plus it's got musclebound alien catgirls. So 10/10 show your argument is invalid. Subscribed.

Cool review, but I don't think that one joke episode make's the entire show have "bad" writing. Also robotic arms on space ships madkee total sense. Did you not know that the american space shuttle had a robotic arm made for maintenance and other applications ?
@chillreview63611 ай бұрын
The cactus clip was just one (very ridiculous) example of how goofy and dumb the show can be. As i said in the video, there are a some really well written and memorable aspects of the show, but ita far from perfect. And my point about the retractable arms was referring to the fact they would have grappling fights using them, not that the mere idea of returnable arms on a spaceship was ridiculous. Either way - Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment
