Shikamaru became my fav when he didn’t care about competition or being the best not for lack of motivation but because he understood that real ambition is to realise the dream of watching the clouds in the sky with your best friend. And he fought to protect that. He was the first to inherit the will of fire for a reason.

I haven’t watched season 3 in a really long time but it’s definitely my least favorite. I get the avant-garde nature of it, but that doesn’t mean I resonated with it that much. However, I respect Glover’s attempt to create something different. There are a few standouts, though. Of which are, PaperBoi’s drug trip AND the final episode. Because the final episode (to me) is what season 3 should’ve been. The gang getting into shit whilst abroad. WITH a strong emotional core anchoring it. Van’s breakdown really helped endear me to the season, though. It was just so…raw. And open. And vulnerable. Atlanta has always been that, but Van given time to shine without her playing off of or interacting with any of the boys really captivated me. I don’t remember how long Van was gone for. Idk if it was a couple weeks or a couple of months. It’s not as though, she had been neglecting Lottie the entire show. She’s been consistently there for her. However, parents do fuck up. And who knows how long Van would’ve been out there fucking around if she didn’t encounter her friend to bring her back to reality. Randomly, I might add. She should be held accountable, but I can’t fathom how difficult being a single mother is. We don’t know how present Earn is. He’s consistent but…the nigga was essentially homeless when we first met him. Van’s been WAY more stable for their daughter. Earn’s getting his shit together but that doesn’t entirely make up for how long Van’s been doing it for Lottie. I’m not saying she should be excused but, her snap makes sense.

White people (or any people for that matter) who worry if they are ALLOWED to laugh at something "problematic"( especially people who use "problematic" in their daily conversations ) need to be transported back in time to the kind 19th century prisons where speech was outlawed entirely, Ballad of Reading Gaol style.

From your voice I can tell you are waaay too young for this reference, but The White Shadow was a show about a white saviour basketball coach in a tough HS who really knows how to Get Through to the Kids" Basically Welcome Back Kotter by with a coach instead of a teacher and a more serious tone...MacGruder was very subtle with his cultural references.

@chillreview636 It really is...I loved it as a kid! Ever seen Ralph Baskhi's Coonskin? It's also sometimes called Street Fight....Id love to see your take on it. Fun Fact: The animation team was overwhelmingly comprised of black animators, from a time when that didn't happen. The NAACP protested its use of grotesque minstrel imagry to retell the Brer Rabbit stories against the turmoil of '60s and 70s civil unrest and police and mob brutality. Smoke bombs were set off in the lobby of the premiere...it's just a fantastic peice of animation. I'd do a whole Bakshi night and pair it with Heavy Traffic, Hey Good Lookin, Wizards and of course Fritz the Cat! And that damn rabbit would make an awesome tattoo...or at least a T shirt.

Great video, just like the previous ones in that series. Some of the takes here really provoked me to think about season 3 again, and let me look from a diffrent perspective. A small trivia: I think that Ep.5 took place in Budapest, Hungary, since some of the signs around the venue are in Hungarian, and I think someone during the episode mentions that.

I hate the way you always bring up Van's parenting when you focus on her as if Ern isn't an equal participant or parent. Why does every Van analysis have to end in "suck it up and raise your kid"? we're all human and we all need support whether we're women or men and that grace is never given to black women/mothers
@chillreview63611 күн бұрын
I focused on Van's parenting because this season is about her attempting to abandon her child to start a new life in Europe. If Earn had done that, I would have called him out on it too. I'm not sure whats so controversial saying parents shouldn’t abandon their children.
@Jj368mmm8 күн бұрын
The controversy doesn’t stem from not calling parents out on trying to abandon kids but your view on the only black woman parent in the show. The entire time it seems as tho Ern is out on the town trying to make a way ‘for his kid or himself’ but it’s never mentioned bc he’s not seen as the primary caregiver. Vans perspective comes in bc she seems to be the child’s primary parent which can be stressful. The assumptions are what I have a problem with. She’s breaking down bc she’s not allotted the same space and error that ern is in the show even if she’s trying to make her own way (aside from what we see or understand). My anger stems from the constant assumption that women can’t have that same space ern is allotted. We never get it. If we do - people ask “where’s your kid” - but never ask the baby daddy this same question if roles were reversed. Van is breaking and you point this out hit follow Up with an insensitive comment that you soundtrack express for ern if he was the primary caregiver as a dad. You’re missing the point that both they lives changed after the birth of the kid and ern is the one who is more socially acceptable to live out his dreams and still be seen as a great father but when van shows any signs of individualism- she’s selfish and a bad mom

I really do feel like your reaction to the episode is the reason it exists. I think it’s really saying a lot. In a season where the main four characters are essentially finding out more about their black identity through newfound experiences to transcend it Van’s story is the main one of the season. Amelie is a film about a white woman in Europe who can live in a world of her own making. Toni Morrison has a quote that if she didn’t make her own world she would die in this one. It’s not so directly about the realities of parenting than the sometimes oppressive view the world casts on black women and the denial of their own determinations 47:18
@chillreview63613 күн бұрын
I understand what you and the show were trying to say. I don't have a problem with Van attempting to make her own world. My issue is that Van made a world that didn't include her daughter. I can't sympathize or reconcile with that. If the writers had changed that detail and gave Van some tangible plan to still raise Lottie, then I wouldn't hate the episode at all

@chillreview636 I watched the 4 videos, and all I can say is that our points are closer than I expected In video #1 u said it shoulda never exiated, but in video #4 you said that the problem with the season is that its episodes are "just ok" for the most part When someome uses the phrase "it shouldnt even exist", I think of that as something horribly unbearable, something atroucious, not just "mid" To make a comparision, I could bring out videogames like Pokemon Scarlet & Violet. So yea theres the confusion, I thought u thought it was horrible but in reality u just have a different conception of things that shouldnt exist or maybe u just used that phrase without thinkin too much I remember that u said episode 6 was thw worst, and although I kinda see why, its just a funny ass episode imo, and in a vacuum its one of the best cuz its funny and one of the most memorable, but if you analyze it like u do I see your point in it being the worst. For episode 10 u said Riley felt like he was an asshole, but Id disagree, if u really pay attention he is actually unaware of the comments he makes, and I think doubling down on "gay is gay" is actually in line with his character of "being a real nigga". Episode 10 is actually one of the best and funniet imo, something underrated bout that episode is things like "r-word is rong"😭😭😭

I was really surprised with your intial takes on the anthology episodes and final take on the Van Episodes. I loved the anthology episodes because Atlanta always had this way of taking familiar concepts and mixing it with unique experiences that come with being black in America AND poor in America in more imaginative and surreal ways. Season 1 and 2 were hilarious and had this element of shock but season 3 especially after the wait had these big elements of surprise and horror (which I love horror) but really speaking on the trauma effects of it all. So I was upset at the fact that we were getting less of the main cast these episodes were truly such amazing conversations with friends and family which was always my reason for loving Atlanta. Now for that Van episode all of my friends and I LOVED IT. And as I unfortunately am surrounded by more mothers in Vans situation that loss of individuality all to completely embody this supposed look of motherhood and parenting mostly alone is indeed incredibly taxing. I’ve found these women and men in these situations have tendencies to snowball and intellectualize a lot of what they’re feeling due to not having a lot of present support or ears to listen. Of course Earn is making money now but it’s still incredibly apparent he’s not there with and for his daughter’s development and is putting mainly all on Van. I’m a firm believer in it takes a village to raise a child and It’s amazing Van had family support to watch lottie while she finds herself and shows that Van was planning to obviously come back to lottie. But nothing reminds you of who you are or WERE by those you were hanging around so her friend noticing her and taking time to check in even tho it was just a run in 🧑🏾🍳💋. The episode hilarious, ridiculous, and amazing display of female rage she is a person first and a mother second. It capped off the season with a return to self, return to familiarity, return to ATLANTA! (And a little bit of water sports Donald has been interesting when it comes to specific works like that 😂). Still enjoyed the watch always such high quality edits.

Like I said in the video, I have come around to liking pretty much all of the anthology episodes. I think at the time S3 aired, I was juat so disappointed from not seeing the main cast as much after 3 and half years of wating, and some of the episodes we did get with main cast weren't my favorites. But I'll never deny the genuis of most of S3's writing. But about that Van episode.... I gotta hard disagree with you 😅. I actually had the exact opposite experience with my friends. Everyone I've watched that episode with has agreed that it makes Van look like a horrible mother. My girlfriend just watched it the other day for the 1st time and couldn't believe she would abandon Lottie like that. I don't want to make it seem like I'm ignorant or apathetic to the plight of mothers (single or otherwise) because they obviously go through a lot, but I just didn't like the way it was depicted by the writers. I get what the writers were trying to go for, but it felt a little too over top and ridiculous. And she 1000% was not going to bring Lottie over to Europe with her. You can tell, because she doesn't snap out if her mental Delusion until her friend asks her how Lottie fits into her new life. It would also be incredibly irresponsible and dangerous to bring a child into all the crazy stuff Van was into while in Paris. But our differing views about the finale and Van aside - I do appreciate you watching, and your comment was very insightful.
@crystalgem716 күн бұрын
I respect that everyone has an opinion and that we are all entitled to that opinion but i do have to say it comes off very misogynistic to say "go raise your child" about Van's character but not keep that same energy towards Earn. And i think that is the intention with the writing of the overall arc of Van, and black women as a whole. In your synapsis you give all the praise to Earn about growing but lend no empathy or understanding to Van's struggle of being a single mom having to forgive Earn's continuous absences during entire stretches of seasons. She, and you, instantly forgive Earn for his lack luster fatherly presence and then you both instantly forgive him when he shows the least amount of fathering. Van has one instance in the whole series of ATL where she goes on vacation and instantly she's irresponsible and and selfish. Its a trash take, and leads to the narrative of Black Women having to be a perfect mother and have their entire lives together from the beginning. This take on her narrative arc feels like you didn't even want to explore deeper than surface level. I enjoyed your entire synapsis of the series except every take you had on Van. In all 3 videos it feels like you had no empathy for her. Almost like you made your judgments about her from the start. Very Weird my dude. All that to say, I wish you would have allowed her the same growth and understanding that you did for everyone else in the series, who quite frankly have done much worse than her, actions wise.
@crystalgem716 күн бұрын
I took the time to read through several coments and im thankful that im not alone in my thoughts about this review. Again i want to say that its a very well done synapsis of the entire series, probably one of the best on the platform. However im thankful that most, if not every instance, of people mentioning Van, we all collectively have the same view. I usually dont comment on any videos on this platform but hearing such a very direct abrasive take on the character it took me out of the "Chill' feeling and felt really out of character of your overall view of all the characters. I want to apologize for calling your take trash, because its not. its your opinion. Looking through most of the comments i see that most of everyone feels the same as i do about the sudden shift in tone of your opinion when it comes to Van. You even called her a dead beat in one of your replies to another comment and said that Earn was the one going out to provide for their daughter but thats not entirely true. Van Been taking care of Lotty (sorry im not sure how to spell her name) and working to provide and Earn was there sometimes. Im saying that maybe the fact that you have so many comments about that Van take, might make you pause and reflect why you feel so intensely about the only female character.
@chillreview63615 күн бұрын
Not sure where the disconnect is coming from regarding my views on Van in S3. I never trashed Van as a mother in my other videos, because she was a great mom. I even mentioned in my S1 video that she was completely justified in being upset with Earn chasing a pipe dream fantasy instead of being there for her and Lottie. My issue with Van in season 3 is not that she went on vacation - my issue that while on that vacation, she started a completely new life as a new person and tried to abandon Lottie. Earn isn't a perfect parent by any means, but he was over seas for work to provide for Van and Lottie. He left his daughter because he was told by Van that she would take care of her while he was gone. Van lied to Earn, Lottie and her parents so that she could escape and start over. That's deadbeat sh!t... plain and simple. If the roles were reversed and Earn did the same thing, I would absolutely feel the same way I do about Van. All of the other characters grow as the show goes on, but at this point of the show, Van was the only one regressing. That's why I went in on her and the writers for how they handled her character. She was a great black female character until this moment, and that's what makes me so upset about it, because ruined the only female character on the show in my eyes
