I was always a Suzuka man, myself. The calm, collected, calculated, and cold exterior to be immediately destroyed by the fact that she still feels shame and wants to preserve her dignity was a good representation of a person who could hold their own in conversation and chaotic situations. Also she hot.

"A boy has the right to dream. There are endless possibilities stretched out before him. What awaits him down the path, he will then have to choose. The boy doesn't always know. At some point, the boy then becomes an adult and learns what he was able to become. Joy and sadness forever will accompany this. He is confronted with the choice. When this happens, does he bid his past farewell in his heart? Once a boy becomes an adult, he can no longer go back to being a boy. The boy is now a man. Only one thing can be said: A boy has the right to dream, for those endless possibilities are stretched out before him. We must remember; All men were once boys. "

Hey Eyepatch Wolf… thanks. In the midst of this crisis, I’ve been struggling with depression and anxiety attacks bad enough to leave me dry-heaving into a sink, and I have felt very alone. But for 21 minutes and 12 seconds just now, it felt like someone cared and was trying to pick me up and show me how to be okay, acknowledging their own struggles and pointing to another, entertaining success story of overcoming anxiety. And it might seem stupid, but by the end of this video that feeling of being cared for and understood left me in tears. So thank you. It means a lot, and I’m gonna start watching Outlaw Star tomorrow

If you think youtube is parasocial. OR Make REAL connections on KZbin. And recognize them as REAL social connections (just with different characteristics) and don’t call these “para”social. Or. Ignore me cuz I’m just a internet voice and could be a person who realized their dreams and is now almost done with law school, or could be a Russian bot farm worker at a bank of 300 iPhones posting comments Putin told me to.

@gibbdude empathetize. The word you are looking for is empathize. Sympathize is if something bad happens and you really feel bad for that person. Empathize is "yeah I understand where you are coming from." It isn't even really agreeing, it's simply "oh yeah, I can see how you ended up feeling this way" Also, cowboy Bebop, is, in my opinion, a phase in people's life. At least it was for me. I quickly grew out of that "this is cool" factor and actually detest all the characters with an exception of Ed and maaaaaybe Jet. Maybe. Mushroom Samba is the only episode I can really watch without turning it off in disgust. The main characters are so toxic and never redeem themselves. That's simply my opinion though and hope people can respect that. Thanks for reading.

The only reason I know of the opening and how good it is is because when I was 10 I got one of the original eng dubbed video cassettes gundam wing episodes like 1 thru 4 or 5 and one of the movie adds oddly enough was for outlaw star and the opening played during its ad. I got the cassette I think after outlaw star aired on toonami which I know from the day time block and I think here in nyc it also aired after they were finished airing gundam wing. Dont quote me because I cant remember much about airing schedules. But anyway the opening played durring that ad and it got me excited for outlaw star and for some reason even as a kid I registered that as the theme for outlaw star for some reason. Therefore when I got into listening to music I eventually looked up the outlaw star theme and added it to my playlist. Sorry for the essay.

I absolutely loved this show and while bebop focused more head-on approaches to dealing with personal demons; this show helped show that even with personal demons you still got your life to live and world ahead of you. All you need to do is go for it and dont be held back. This short review hits exactly why I loved this series far better than i could ever explain myself. If you liked cowboy bebop please give this an independent viewing as itself. If you can do that you see that it actually brings something else entirely to the table just in a slightly similar setting. Outlaw star is still one of my favorite series. You get comfortable in goofy hyginks and then suddenly blindsided by intense personal confrentaion that was actually always there part of the characters. Its just something they don't like about themselves and keep it to themselves except in moments where it becomes too much and it explodes out. If nothing else watch ep 15. It had a huge impact on me and helped me explain the deep root of my past depression perfectly.

Love episode 15 and the little existential funk gene is in that ep. When he tries to get with Mel and then is just lying awake with the shadow of the window blinds on his face - very artistic shot. And the scene he has at the bar with leilong is awesome. That’s why I love this show - it’s balance. It had moments like that juxtaposed with silly moments or over the top action. But when it got sort of semi-serious is probably when I liked it the most. It also fills me with a sense of adventure like no other show does.

Dang, I got so hooked on the joke idea that he never gets over his anxiety. I love when stories play on the grand fantasy setting and hyperfocus in on something, and I was pretty hype for that hypothetical ngl. HOWEVER I also love me some goofy space action too so this also slaps
@gammagod7201

Honestly when he said the joke scenario I got really invested. The moment he said that Gene never leaves his planet due to anxiety, it instantly peaked my interest (more so than the actual show, not saying it didn't peak my interest as well.) I instantly thought that this show might be something of a great deconstruction. Something like a solemn lament which shows the results when you are too afraid to follow your ambitions and give in to your inner anxieties. What happens when the protagonist of the anime isn't someone who can overcome their challenges and regrets their inability to overcome the obstacles, but tragically making excuses to justify why he couldn't. But at the same time I thought that a show named "outlaw star" wouldn't be like that and so I instantly came up with another scenario. That this show was going to tell us about how a character felt anxiety and gave up on their dream despite fighting their anxiety, but eventually quits, and (while tragic) maybe that's not so bad. Maybe this character eventually makes his own fulfilling life on the planet in spite of his younger dream and starts to appreciate the life on his planet while still carrying the sober, tragic thought in the back of his mind about a "what if" scenario but realizing he gave it his all. He isn't successful in the normal definition anime creates, but he is content with his life. He is a star but not in the normal sense, instead he is an "outlaw star" ya know. When he said that it was a joke part of me was instantly disappointed. I still watched the video though, and this seems like a good show. I just got my hopes up for a joke ;D. I guess coming up with these kinds of stories makes sense with my tastes though... Fate/Zero is my favorite after all and Kaiji is 2nd.

Okay, as someone who’s never watched Outlaw Star, I would LOVE to see an anime like this where he doesn’t overcome his fear of space, like the hypothetical presented. Seriously, picture an entire series where you see all these crazy things happen...but only from a distance. Our main character is just a random extra in the crazy action space anime. He’s the bystander in One Punch Man. He’s a regular citizen in Star Wars. He witnesses all of these crazy, world changing things, maybe even caused by a hero that would be considered the main protagonist of his own series, but he never directly gets involved. Maybe he gets close, the hero quickly whisks him away from danger, but that’s it. Idk, that kind of show just sounds interesting to me.

This ending really hits hard. I'm an essential employee that works in the health care and nights. So, maybe I can't relate but I feel like I've been isolated forever. Quarantine has been strenuous on everyone, but I know we are capable to survive. Instead of just staying home, I've just been given a bigger cage. Following my narrowing route to and from work, rarely seeing the light of day, to systematically cycling through my PPE.. and quarantining my clothes for years, much less 2 months.. Freedom does feel like a dream. Outlaw Star has always held a place in my heart. From the adventurous and motivational opening to the somber and reflective credit(s). Thanks for distilling it into words. and to everyone, again, I do believe we will all get through this.

+Ishima O I'm an essential worker too. I'm a cashier at my local grocery store. I have been feeling drained and overwhelmed since this whole thing started, and now customers are dropping the polite act and cussing out me and my coworkers when they don't get their way, and excusing it with "being frustrated" with quarantine, yet us grocery store workers aren't extended that same sympathy as the customers because in their eyes, "it's just a part of the job, we have to take it with a smile and thank them for keeping us in business during quarantine". It's also extremely frustrating having people telling me to "be grateful that I get to leave my home" and that it's a "luxury". Like, no. It's not. If I had the option, I would stay home for my safety and the safety of my family, because both my brother and I are grocery store workers, and our mother is high risk because of chronic illnesses. She has also had two surgeries done in the last six years (two total knee replacements on both knees), so that opens her even more to diseases because if bacteria gets in her system and isn't treated, it could kill her. But I don't get that option because we live in California, which is a super expensive state, so the only money that comes in to pay for bills, food, and to keep a roof over our head is my dad who makes five figures and half of my minimum wage paycheck-- it's still a struggle. (Also, and there's no nice way to say this, but my mother is an emotionally abusive parent. She's more than happy to put my health at risk, because making sure that my father takes half of my paycheck for them is the bigger priority over my wellbeing.) You've described the situation perfectly. As essential workers, there is no "freedom" in leaving the house to go to work, because that's the only place we're allowed to go. We're just moving around in a bigger cage.

Nah it was definitely censored when they first showed it in the US. They changed the blood to robot juice in a lot of the fights and Melfina was always in shorts and a tube top.

I gotta say there's a beauty to each Eyepatch Wolf video. Music cues, pacing, the cript, everything about each of these I'm binging inspires something in me, even about shows and topics I have no interest in. I don't know how you do it, but you get me excited for everything you're excited about. That's a beautiful kind of enthusiasm.

Martian Successor Nadesico is an interesting comparison, since both that and Outlaw Star have wide swings in tone. But Nadesico does it jarringly to deliberately invoke some hard mood whiplash, while Outlaw Star makes it feel natural. I appreciate both shows for making the big range in tone and mood work.

@@SnakebitSTI they were both part of the same hour long block that used air at 3 in the morning. It was a balls because i had to be up at 8 the next morning. On the flipside i only had to wait one day between episodes. If you havent seen vandred you should check it out if you liked nadesico.

@@macker33 Outlaw Star aired in 1998. Anime was definitely a thing in the West, though not as popular as today. And the Internet was most definitely a thing. In the US, Outlaw Star first aired on Cartoon Network in 2001. DVR was still rare at the time, but VCRs were still common.

When the COVID-19 pandemic started, I started rewatching Outlaw Star on Hulu for the first time since I saw it as a 5-year old when it was airing on Toonami. Thankfully, I came across this video not long after this was uploaded, and I come back here to reminisce a wonderful and underrated series, as well as also feeling that sense of wonder and excitement that I used to have as a child and even teenager. I’m about to start my doctorate, and rewatching this gives me a HUGE reminder that, yes, the world is still full of wonder and excitement and we just have to keep going and face our fears. Thank you for this video 🫶🏻

I think Outlaw Star has infinitely more rewatchability to it than Cowboy Bebop, because of how light-hearted it is. To this day I still to back and rewatch the entire series all the way through at least once a year because it is such a fun ride from start to finish. Cowboy Bebop is still great and deserves its place in pop culture. But Outlaw Star you can enjoy no matter who you are, or where you are. Outlaw Star is the Star Wars to Cowboy Bebop's Star Trek.
