Just wanna say, yes Sonic’s atmosphere is quite urban, but there are rural places as well, and sonic frontiers’s first island is pretty rural, but i don’t mind it, different idea is fine, but I’d normally imagine sonic in an urban atmosphere

Good, somebody finally acknowledges how good the Nega Wisp Armor music is. When you were talking about level design and theming I knew you were going to bring up Sonic Lost World as a bad example. You also said, "Not all good things last forever." Funnily, at the end of Sonic and The Black Knight (The game before colours), Sonic says "Every world with have its end. I know that's kind of sad, but... that's why we gotta live life to the fullest in the time we have." For me, that really hones in that the passion that used to be put into Sonic Games is kinda gone. Since Sonic Forces though I have not been optimistic for the future of Sonic at all.

I agree on what you said about the spectacle as it can overshadow the gameplay. Frontiers is looking run into that problem because it seems so far the automated sequences and instant win combos could completely take over. A good balance to suggest would be Metroid Dread during the boss fights. If you’re able to parry their counterattack, you’ll activate a sequence where you get to shoot barrage of missiles-along with being part of the cinematic spectacle. That’s a great balance between the two elements that Sonic hasn’t nailed in a while.

i completely agree with everything said here, what makes sonic sonic is well... the cool edge LOL if you got bombastic music and settings that wouldn't feel out of place in a sonic game then you pretty much hit the nail on the head frontiers strays a bit away but im hopeful that the game itself can still feel like sonic in the end or at least do what it can to establish itself as a sonic game also the editing is REALLY top notch here! inspires me to improve on the editing for mine

I agree so hard on this I'd clockwork orange style force Iizuka to watch it. (I like Iizuka but I'm pretty sure he's not that aware of these 4 things, or at least doesn't realize or has forgotten a bit how important they are) About the urban setting i might add that there's always a theme of nature contrasting technology, or culture to be more precise. In more urban settings like radical highway the natural, living thing fighting technology is Shadow. He's a wild force dashing through man-made environment causing chaos (see what idid there?). Likewise, Classic Sonic in Studiopolis is a wild rebellious animal let loose on an exploitative dystopian tv studio set. The contextual descriptives I'm using are the connecting tissue that holds together and feeds into the cinematic feel To me that's why worlds are called zones and levels are called acts. In good Sonic levels there's always something happening. Sonic's lust for adventure always should lead him where things are happening, that's the reason he goes anywhere. Ideally, acts are story beats. i.e. angel island zone: sonic&tails visit a newly discovered island because the death egg crash landed there, but Knuckles knocks the emeralds out of Super Sonic and now they're stranded. Act 2: Badniks attack the jungle in search of the MA and set it on fire. Now what about more natural heavy environments?. Well for starters there's always Eggman doing something, or places where something happened, ancient cultures, magical intervention, there's always folklore for lack of a proper work (im spanish speaker trying to get my ideas across about sonic in a foreign language so if you read this far wow thank you so much) Disclaimer: i mostly leave Sonic 1 out of this logic because i see that game as a growing pain, almost sonic but not yet there.
